Every move can be dodged, but you have to learn the timing and positioning. Unfortunately, the animations don't always make the timing obvious because your Pokemon doesn't take damage right away. You just have to figure it out by trial and error.

ml1201 08-12-2016 12:48 AM

If only I had a gym I can easily get to to try it on. >>; Going to the BMW dealership and standing near there building is awkward...

Panda 08-12-2016 01:14 AM

I live in downtown, in my city...so it helps a lot. :D

Edit* Literally living in downtown, which has so many pokestops and gyms. >.< I don't know how people in small towns are going to play.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-12-2016 02:22 AM

You just deal with the smallness, and perhaps have to take outings. The closest gym to me is a good half an hour drive (super jealous that one of the gym champs has an arcanine), and the nearest pokestop is about 15 to 20 minutes. I live in a farm area, so there is nothing here. My niece caught one by using incense. Once college starts up again there will be little issues as there are stops everywhere, and the campus isn't even all that big.

Yeah, I noticed the dodge thing, and would generally get a attack-attack-dodge-dodge pattern going. Just wasn't sure about the bigger attacks. I would do just fine with regular attacks but the big one would get me, and I couldn't see the Pokemon doing it.

Awen Moonshine 08-12-2016 05:57 AM

I think we have a relatively decent balance of things where I am as we are on the outskirts of town, but thankfully things like our local pub and hall that's also used as a nursery that are pokestops and are only a 10-20 minute walk from my home.

Plus a 20-ish minute drive from here is Bluewater (a large shopping mall) that has around 20-25 pokestops in it and 3 gyms, but I can't drive so it is rare that we get to go there...

ml1201 08-12-2016 09:06 AM

You know, I haven't even tried the mall since I usually no reason to go to it. o.o;

Awen Moonshine 08-12-2016 01:23 PM

They tend to be pretty good places to go for pokestops over here ^_^ Maybe something to try when you have the time?

ml1201 08-12-2016 03:26 PM

Sadly the only people I know of that would help me get to these places (since I don't know where they are) are either working when I'm off or sleeping usually or can't go out too far because they have night shift at work and start at 4pm.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-12-2016 05:45 PM

Well the little town that has the gyms that I mentioned has their farmers market on Fridays and I do like to go so that gives me a reason beyond just Pokemon to go there. I like the game but I can't justify the gas and time to go just for the sake of some loot.

Awen Moonshine 08-12-2016 07:26 PM

I can understand that being an issue. As a non-driver I have to wait for my partner to be home before I can go to any pokestops as I have quite crippling social anxiety... It's part of the reason why I don't talk on here much... But it's something me and the partner can do together as most of the time he is at work and I'm working and looking after the small one... Plus it's helping both of us get fitter ^_^;;

ml1201 08-12-2016 10:54 PM

It's okay Awen, I'm trying to get a job where I don't have to interact directly with customers anymore, quite a few of them are very off putting. When more so when they are either very verbal about their politic/religious views or talking about current events like they know what they are talking about and ignoring you when you hint to them five times that they are insulting your nationality. That last one was really annoying to deal with, saying Ukrainians are Russians while if it was the rest of my family they would not be happy to hear that from him because my ancestors left Ukraine to come to America because they wanted to get away from the Russians that were taking over Ukraine.

When it comes to things like that I REALLY don't want to talk to anyone, and my job not talking to me about changes being done is awful, once again they said we don't do something in my area and didn't tell me. =.=;

Lawtan 08-12-2016 11:16 PM

*Offers hugs to Awen and ml1201*

One of my mother's students had a similar story to that - his family also left the Ukraine.

On a pokemon note, my 10km egg was an eevee. Now, I love eevees...but...

Coda 08-13-2016 12:14 AM

Look on the bright side: That's a bunch of Eevee candy!

Awen Moonshine 08-13-2016 04:25 AM

*cuddles Law* That's quite lucky, congrats on your Eevee! <3

I've not had any eggs for a while as I've not been able to get to any pokestops since last weekend...

Quiet Man Cometh 08-13-2016 05:07 AM

Good haul today. Got some pastries and mom bought jams and backing. Hit the stops 16 times or so, took out a low level pokemon at a rival gym, only caught a couple commons guys for candies but left with some 40+ pokeballs and a full egg inventory. Now I need to start egg hatching!

Demonskid 08-13-2016 01:38 PM

They had a tip somewhere for eggs.

Use your Permanent Incubator for the 2km and 5km eggs and use the ones that expire for your 10km eggs. get the most out of the ones that will expire.

Awen Moonshine 08-13-2016 05:31 PM

Finally home! We went past a load of pokestops on the way to and from my partners family party and managed to catch a CP 1k+ Electabuzz plus some other random pokemon ^_^ I now have a full bag of eggs too and a much better looking stock of balls too ^_^ Super shattered now though, so off to be soon...

Also congrats on your haul Quiet Man Cometh! <3

ml1201 08-13-2016 05:43 PM

I'm so jealous of you two, I need to find out how to get to the park near here everyone talks about. :/ But congrats on the awesome stuff! And thanks Law for the hugs. :3

That's what I'm doing. My 10k egg is in my temp incubator.

Coda 08-14-2016 01:45 AM

I use the 3-use ones for 5km eggs as well just so I can keep room to get new eggs.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-14-2016 03:51 AM

Yeah, I have two 2k eggs, the rest are 5 right now.

Does incense attract pokemon that are in the area, but more of them, or is it independent of what's actually supposed to be around?

Lawtan 08-14-2016 02:15 PM

I am uncertain. I know that it increased slightly what I caught, but not as much as a lure.

Coda 08-14-2016 03:25 PM

If you're just sitting in one place using an Incense, it doesn't do much -- it spawns a Pokemon from the list of stuff that spawns in your general area once every ~5 minutes. It's weaker than a Lure.

If you're WALKING with one, then it triggers as frequently as once every 100 meters as long as you're not traveling too fast. If you're traveling at a fuzz under 4mph then you hit the sweet spot of once per minute, but the way it measures distance makes it hard to hit that sweet spot. And for reference, 4mph = a 15-minute mile, so that's power-walking but not up to jogging yet.

I did not have that experience.
(30 minute 1 mile walk, 4 pokemon showed up with incense)

Coda 08-14-2016 10:31 PM

Huh. That's substantially less than my normal experience with incense. I'm not sure what kind of confounding factor may have applied in your case, because I would have expected at least five in that span even if you weren't moving at all.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-15-2016 02:45 AM

What if there are no Pokemon showing on your radar? As far as I know, my niece here only caught one.

Coda 08-15-2016 06:12 PM

That's unfortunately kinda normal. If there aren't any Pokemon nearby, then you just need to go somewhere else.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-16-2016 11:12 PM

Went into town yesterday, but mom was driving so I got to play passenger Pokemon Go! Several drive by stops and a couple drive by pokemon! I keep seeing Venognat on the radar thing but the darn guy never actually shows.

I found a gym with an empty slot but by the time I walked there, it was gone. Thankfully, the other gym nearby changed teams and there was a slot open. I put in my CP 58 Rattata thinking that I could train and swap to higher CP guy but apparently it doesn't work that way, so little Booker held down the slot for an hour or so. Got some training points and coins out of it.

Also, my egg hatched into a Machop.

Question: do potions get less effective over time? I remember it only taking 2-3 to heal my Vaporeon, but last time it took about five. Is he mad at me for using him too much?

Coda 08-16-2016 11:47 PM

Potions heal a fixed amount of HP (20), but your Pokemon's max HP goes up as it gets stronger. So yes, over time, potions will recover less of the bar.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-17-2016 12:25 AM

I haven't powered it up recently, does it get tougher at all from training?

I'm honestly kind of hoping for more 2k eggs. Fast to hatch, and they have the starters.

Awen Moonshine 08-17-2016 03:47 AM

They also have magikarp which you need a ton candy from just to evolve it! I was super lucky and got one from my last egg ^_^

Coda 08-17-2016 02:06 PM

No, they don't level up without spending stardust.

Don't know what to say then.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-18-2016 01:42 AM

So I got the last spearow I needed to evolve mine, then the egg I was incubating hatched into another spearow about 10 seconds later, but it was a better spearow so I guess that's okay.

I find I'm getting stuck over when to evolve. I'm a little bit from my next level so I keep thinking "I'll just wait until I level again." Have all the candy I need for spearow and pidgey.

ovo territorial marking!

Lawtan 08-18-2016 01:42 PM

O.o

Okay...reconsidering whether I should join Instinct, now...

Illusion 08-18-2016 01:55 PM

I still prefer Valor. Painting my gyms with the blood of my enemies is much better then tears or pee.....

Coda 08-18-2016 02:00 PM

I picked Instinct because Zapdos is best bird.

I'm kinda losing steam on Pokemon Go. I'm still interested in the game as a whole, and I'd LIKE to play it more, but given my schedule these days I just don't have time to.

Lawtan 08-18-2016 02:01 PM

That I agree with. Blood is fun!

And yeah, when you are carrying two bags around campus, it's hard to have a phone on. But it remains something to get you out when you have time.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-19-2016 03:44 AM

I based my team choice on this:

Awen Moonshine 08-19-2016 03:52 AM

Nice... I picked my favourite colour and Eeveelution of those three... ^_^;;
