Congratulations on winning NaNoWriMo! What will you crochet now?
|
thanks!
i'm working on a blanket for my older daughter for the hollydays; another blanket for me; and a shawl for me. but the blanket for older daughter will be worked on now. :) |
I need to get back to work on knitting the Mighty Nein...
|
Wow, finished with plenty of time to spare, look at you!
|
so i discovered candy melts and silicone moulds. i think i'm in trouble?
|
Mmmm why in trouble? That sounds tasty.
That was my gateway into making other candies though... and then next thing you know you're incinerating your hands trying to pull sugar. |
tasty, yes. but i don't have the money to be buying more crafty things! gah! XD
i'm getting some Jewish star moulds from my mom to make candies for chanukah this year. |
You make a point... new hobbies are dangerous to one's bank account.
Those sound cute and delicious. I helped a friend make custom candy coins for her nieces and nephews once for Chanukah. We ate like half of them before we wrapped them up for them. I was practicing my calligraphy for an award scroll earlier and somehow ended up with ink on my belly... |
oh my!
i have pics at instagram.com/trystan830 ... my account is public :D |
Dip pens are hard to use. I am not skilled and I probably shouldn't be doing it in bed anyway.
Are the little skulls candy too, or are they soaps? |
the skulls are candy too! i mixed blue and yellow melts and that was the color green i got :)
so we have a historical site near to me - Pennsbury Manor - the manor house and grounds are kept like they were in colonial times, and one of the fun little things you can do is try to write on paper with a quill and ink. one of the times friends and i went with my daughters, we all tried the quill pen, and since i've done calligraphy before, i was the only one who could actually write with it! :) i'm guessing a dip pen would be like the quill? |
They're adorable!
They're exactly like a quill except they are metal nibs instead of a cut feather shaft. I've done some writing with quills as well. They're a bit of a pain though because you have to keep stopping to sharpen them. |
thanks!
ah, gotcha. i've used metal nibs as well. |
The only difference between them and a regular fountain pen is that you have to dip it in the ink repeatedly instead of the ink being inside.
|
yep, i've used both types of pens then. :)
|
I was looking up patterns for a woolly mammoth toy, because I wanted to send Laura Bailey a Jester-Mammoth with a tag that said "Fuck it, I'm a MAMMOTH!"
|
guess you've gone down the pattern clicking rabbit hole on ravelry, and 20 zillion patterns later, you've forgotten what you were looking for in the first place? XD
|
No, I actually forgot why I was looking for a mammoth toy pattern.
Anyway, got the stuff for tomorrow. |
whoops. but good that you remembered :)
|
Yeah. also got a reminder about a game I used to play on my old laptop, so I just installed it. gonna play in a bit.
|
oh yaay! have fun! :)
|
I talked a friend into crocheting a kraken hat for me. She says I don't have to pay her if I pay for materials and the pattern, but I kind of am insisting.
|
ooh a kraken hat sounds like fun!
|
|
it is cute!
i don't do hats, or i might want to make one for me ;) |
I don't often wear hats but since I am thinking of nearly shaving my head I may want something to keep me warm during the snowocalypse.
I need to buy the yarn for the pattern, but I don't know much about yarn. |
well that makes sense!
hmm... does the pattern say how much yarn somewhere? |
It says:

|
you could use Supersaver.... or another weight 4 yarn that's not soft and floppy - in addition to not using I Love this yarn, don't use Red Heart Soft, Red Heart With Love, or Caron's simply soft.
if you have a Michael's near you, you could use Impeccable as well as Supersaver. you could also use Vanna's Choice as well. :) |
The nearest Michaels is a mere 176 miles away according to Google Maps. XD
I'll probably be ordering it online... |
you don't have to go to michaels - AC Moore, JoAnn's, and walmart all have RHSS yarn
|
I don't know what an AC Moore is, but we have a Walmart about 50 miles away so that will probably be where I go. Unless this project gets put off until January. We have to go to Denver in January so I could hit up the Michaels then.
Thank you for your help. <3 |
AC Moore is also a craft store. they're based out here, in NJ, with only about 140 stores. my michael's is right next to one. as of now, they're our competitors.... but at sometime in the unspecified future, they're closing all their stores, but some will be reopening as a michael's. i'm laughing my ass off at that. XD
hopefully you'll get your yarn! :) |
If you aren't aware, rub the yarn you're thinking of against your cheek. If you don't like how it feels, don't get it
As try mentioned, some brands are just Not Good for anything you'll be in contact with Too bad you won't be at the one in Cheektowaga, I'd send you to mom |

I usually buy yarn by looking at the skein, getting grabby hands, and then ending up at home all "why the f... did I buy this?"
Only recommendable if you have some leftover money you want to prevent from going into other bad habits. |
What's funny is I have spun yarn several times, just never really got into crocheting or knitting. I was learning nalbinding a while back but you have to use real wool for.that to work, so my buying parameters were really specific. The only thing I have ever really bought a lot of yarn for was tails and even then only fiber an color really mattered. XD
It would have never occured to me to rub it on my cheek |

Seriously though, what do you even make with these?
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/XmgAA...8M1/s-l300.jpg not to mention my earlier purchases I usually only got a single skein of everything, because beginner logic (one skein oughta be enough for a smaller project like a hat, scarf or mittens, right?) Why do you need to use pure wool for nalbinding? It's on my "to try" list since forever, and actually I was thinking to start with some spare cheap scrap acrylic until I get the hang of it (since someone once mentioned you can't unravel it as easy as knitting when you make a mistake). Will that not work, or is it more a historical accuracy thing? |
You could make a very ugly and useless sweater out of that yarn..
You need wool for nalbinding because it is worked with short lengths of yarn and you have to be able to splice it together. Tying doesn't really work because the knot has to go through the loops every time and it snags a lot. Acrylic won't stick to itself and splice together seamlessly like wool does. You could maybe use a wool blend, bit it would suck to put all tat time in only to have the item fall apart because the splice didn't stay together. |
