i'm a proponent of "buy it when you see it" because i've 'lost' things by waiting too late to try to get them.
on the other hand, it's not so good for my credit card... XD |
Yeah....but until recently, I was basically living paycheck to paycheck.
And my biggest paychecks still were only about 2/3 of my rent, which meant after rent in a good month, I only had about $500. And that had to go to 8 credit card bills, electric, phone, food, cat supplies, etc. So...I splurged on chainmaille stuff this month and will probably do the chairs in a few months. And then figure out how to drag 2 large chairs and a loveseat out of my apartment and down 2 flights of stairs on my own because my one friend keeps saying he'll help get them out. Which he's beeen saying for the last 6 months or so. And they haven't been dealt with yet, so... |

I'm still paycheck to paycheck really, but it's more comfortable now. I don't have to debate if buying a yard of fabric or some yarn is gonna mean sacrificing a few meals or not.
|
yeah, i get that. we only have issues at the beginning of the month, when the mortgage, insurance, and two car payments all come out of the checking account over the course of the first three days of the month
|
Yeah, I've got that end of month/beginning of the month stuff. Because the museum changed the actual dates we get our pay so I can't count on my check coming in on the 1st anymore, which means my check on the 15th has to cover my rent.
Which now they probably fully will, but end of month I generally have 3 or 4 cards, electric, and then rent and 2 cards in the first week of the month that have to basically be covered by my mid-month museum check and my last Joann check. XP Thankfully my raise at the museum is making this a lot less stressful. I can actually pay all my credit card bills with my beginning of the month museum check now. For the first time ever. I feel like I can finally breathe again. I don't actually get vacation time, but I feel like I could take a few days off and not have to worry about it meaning I won't make rent or have to skip some bills that month. |
that's totally awesome! :)
|
Yay! One of my chainmaille orders is arriving today!
|
woohoo! you'll have to post some of your finished items when you get there! :)
|
The one arriving today has a couple of kits, a pendant and a bracelet, and then a rainbow assortment of one size ring I use most frequently for byzantine weave bracelets.
I may just start on the pendant when I get home... Then the order arriving possibly the 14th has supplies for scale flowers which I'm absolutely dying to try/make! |
ooh that sounds like a good haul :)
|
Yeah....I bought way more than I initially planned to...most of the order (from The Ring Lord) that's arriving later is actually limited edition colors (mostly pinks because pinks and reds were 10% off for valentine's) that are leftover from custom orders. And some limited edition colors in small and large scales for flowers. And then silver rings in sizes for the small, single layer flowers, and a double layer flower kit.
Plus the stuff that's waiting in my mail box from Weave Got Maille. |
Weave Got Maille - love it!
|
I'm working on designs for a Rainbow Mothra inspired dress, also gonna make wings and a headdress to go with.
|
Have already made and am disappointed with one of the WGM kits. The whirlybird pendant. Made it exactly as the instructions stated, and it looks great laying down, but looks like garbage when suspended because the weave is just a little too loose to hold it's shape and so the rings kind of flop down and look awful.

oh that's frustrating, Kaderin :(
|
I've seen videos on YouTube for the pendant before, so I may check to see if they list other/different sizes. Though, frustratingly, a lot of videos tend to just say "large ring/small ring" instead of giving actual sizes.
So we'll see. |
anymore, youtube and pinterest are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get.
much like michael's now, which is why i'm not teaching anymore. they've opened it (the classroom & teaching) up to the community, but people who want to teach have to submit a lesson plan to michael's, so there is that. but it's not certified through anyone, like i am with the Craft Yarn Council. i still wear my button on my name tag, but it's more of a show-off thing now. but, even though the lesson plan looks good, you still don't know what you're gonna get when you get there, y'know? |
Trystan! Time to pick the yarn for my entrelac shawl! XD
These are the gradient/ombre ones I'm pretty sure I have enough of. https://i.postimg.cc/sDTrQB6T/20200213-153446.jpg |
ooh, i like the bottom left one - the teal-y colors!
|
Teal it is!
*digs out all the teal yarns* |
oh yaay!
i'm working on part 1 of 2 of my Smaug panels for my heirloom blanket |
Oooooof that whirlybird
There might be a way to make a loose one sit properly? Might be online somewhere? Might just have to play with it and maybe extra mats until it sits? |
Well, my googling turned up a lot of results for whirlybird roof ventilation, but no fixing of a loose chainmaille weave.
So I'm on my own. Did find 1 good tutorial for a larger version on YouTube, which seems like a good, tighter/more stable weave, but I'm not sure how to convert those ring sizes to ones that would fit the smaller pendant size. |
You know you can tell google to chuck searches with certain words, right? So [search] -roof or [search] -ventilation might give better luck?
|
Yeah, I'm too bored with it already. It was a kit, it's been made, I don't really have anything I can do for it at this point and I'm sure as hell not taking it apart to reassemble. So there's really not much point to looking it up.
|
*makes a note to get going on that one project they started...*
|
I feel so accomplished! In the last few days, I've made a pendant, 3 small flowers, 2 big flowers, a bracelet, and a pair of earrings using some of the spare rings from the bracelet kit.
And actually, most of that was just today. I should do chainmaille stuff more often. |
in addition to knitting stuff, I'm also working on writing a Powered by the Apocalypse game based on my old NaNoWriMo stuff.
|
i'm still working on my Smaug panel for my geeky heirloom blanket
|
I recently came into a bunch of crochet cotton, so I'm using that for one project, and will probably use it for a couple others as well...
|
Finish that Smaug!
Prepped some bases for more flowers. And attempted to make/finish 3 more small flowers. 2 were failures, I'm not certain, but I think the rings are a bit thicker or possibly slightly wider, which is throwing off the weave just enough so I can't get the final ring into place. But got 1 more finished fully. I kind of want to make more of the large, double flowers, but the only rings I guarantee have in the right sizes are pink. Which either makes odd color combinations or means I can only use small pink scales with the large frost scales. |
ngl, i want a crapton of scales just to make knitted scale mail dice bags.
|
Those would be awesome!
I want more scales to make more scaled fingerless gloves... I have a lot of hot pink and black, but not really enough of most everything thing else for a full pair. Or my dream project of a weighted blanket made of loom knit scalemail. If my math was accurate, it would just barely make the acceptable weight limit for an adult blanket. |
Unacceptable weight limit?
|
Whoops. Meant acceptable. XP
Good catch. |
I just want a big-ass blanket. period. lol
|
Big blankets are nice. I want one too.
|
I also want to make oversized sweaters and ponchos and the like... so yeah, I need to get knitting on stuff.
|
Oooohhh...an oversized sweater would be nice!
