Nice! I'd like to learn that method, but also with the machine, because I'd eventually like to learn how to customize things for myself. I've seen some interesting projects that look worth trying.

Kaderin Triste 07-18-2020 10:11 AM

If the machine tension seems a little off no matter what you put it at, find the one it's best at (or the least off) and then try slightly adjusting the bobbin tension.

Biomecha 07-18-2020 11:06 AM

I've also been adjusting the bobbin tension, to the point that it really seems way too tight even though it does improve a bit. I tried ordering a new bobbin case, and even that one is really tight without messing with the tension on it. But either way, it's still off even after trying many other troubleshooting methods.

it's kinda tedious sometimes.... but it's more mobile than my machine, and a lot quieter too XD

we can play catch with the virus.... but i don't want to catch it! XD

Derpy McBlueEyes 07-20-2020 01:35 PM

"Dodge viwus!" Derpy throws the little virus plushie at the nearest person.

trystan830 07-20-2020 01:36 PM

*ducks out of the way, the virus plushie hits the wall and falls to the floor*

Derpy McBlueEyes 07-20-2020 02:49 PM

Derpy giggles and runs over to grab the plushie and try again.

Poofy Petticoat/Skirt progress: working on gathering the first tier, will attach to the waistband after. Then it will be time to gather the second tier to fit to the first tier... then the third tier to the second...

So. Much. Gathering.

Kitalpha Hart 07-22-2020 03:18 PM

It's not a pattern so much as me going "I bet I could turn all these old curtains into a petticoat."

trystan830 07-26-2020 10:47 PM

ah, gotcha. that sounds pretty cool too!

Another Wednesday, another page

Kaderin Triste 08-03-2020 05:03 PM

Made my first fitted/shaped (as opposed to the pleated style) mask today! It's a tiny bit small because I made my seams a little bigger than the pattern called for on accident. But it still fits.

Biomecha 08-03-2020 05:23 PM

Nice! That looks a lot better than the ones I see for sale.

I've finally got a functioning prototype my father is testing out, so hopefully I can crank out some better ones soon. It's a different style, though.

Kaderin Triste 08-03-2020 05:39 PM

Thanks!
It's definitely got some bad stitching on the sides where the elastic attaches, but I'll get better at that with practice and might also invest in some little clips to use instead of pins. (I've heard they're actually easier to use for masks.)

I also need to pick up a seam ripper because I can't find mine and I attempted another mask tutorial that had the elastic hooked together to go around the back of the head and I thought that style might work well for at work, but I did the elastic too small so I'm going to undo the sides just enough to get one end of the elastic free, trim the elastic and then stitch it back up again to just do the normal ear straps.

trystan830 08-03-2020 06:14 PM

this is the main style of my masks... it goes from my nose to chin, and it's pretty much up against my face. really the only space in there is right under my nose.

Kaderin, you might recognize the fabric....

Biomecha 08-03-2020 06:42 PM

I've been using little binder clips, but did eventually get some wonder clips. I like the tension they have so far, but haven't used them much yet.

Ohh, you lined it up well. Getting a good fit seems to be the tricky part.

Kaderin Triste 08-03-2020 06:52 PM

10/10 on lining that fabric up i'm not patient enough to do that. XD

I'm just slowly working on cutting mask parts and pining them so they're ready to go. Due to minimal counter space, I'm gonna try prepping a bunch so I can streamline the process and make several masks at once instead of having to move my sewing machine to press seams one at a time.

Bio: Would kill for even binder clips right now probably. I have sewing pins and regular paper clips, but nothing very useful. XD
If we haven't sold out again, I can pick up some wonder clips on Wednesday though.

trystan830 08-03-2020 07:02 PM

i've tweaked my pattern a few times, too.
i use straight pins. I've been poked far too many times... LOL

there's a more proper pic back here...

Kaderin Triste 08-03-2020 07:28 PM

I am absolutely struggling hard at the whole "sewing on the elastic without my machine throwing a tantrum" part of masks. May have to resort to hand sewing for that, though it probably won't look any prettier than what my machine does to it...
XP

Kitalpha Hart 08-03-2020 08:01 PM

Ooh Cheshire mask

Biomecha 08-03-2020 08:04 PM

I've resorted to hand turning the wheel on the machine over the parts that are too thick or want to jam up. I wonder if a walking foot might help, but those seem kind of pricey.

trystan830 08-03-2020 08:15 PM

i've been doing all my sewing by hand.... it's easier to play on line and watch tv if i'm hand sewing XD

Kaderin Triste 08-03-2020 09:02 PM

My hand sewing would a) never get done because it's tedious af and I have no patience and
b) would look a million times worse than my machine sewing. XD

Also my sewing machine is annoying sometimes. Like when the thread comes out of part of the threading mechanisms and I don't realize that's the problem right away so I end up ruining a project and wasting a ton of thread trying to fix the sudden bird nesting. *facepalm*

trystan830 08-03-2020 10:16 PM

i agree that it's tedious, but i'm also doing other things.... so it's not so bad. XD

Kaderin Triste 08-04-2020 11:12 AM

Would rather fight my sewing machine for 10 minutes than hand sew anything if I can avoid it.

further proof that i'm a weird one....

Kaderin Triste 08-04-2020 01:32 PM

The only thing I hand sew are Derpy's skirts. And only because they're just slightly too small for my machine to do them without lots if struggle. And also because his shirt covers the waistband so no one can see my bad stitching anyway.

trystan830 08-04-2020 03:01 PM

yeah, that's fair.

Kaderin Triste 08-04-2020 04:00 PM

Ah the things I do for my kid...
Lol
XD

trystan830 08-04-2020 04:03 PM

i mean, i made my college daughter a box of masks for college, so, the things i do for my kid... LOL :)

Kaderin Triste 08-04-2020 04:06 PM

I mean...I bought Derpy a car so...
XD

trystan830 08-04-2020 04:12 PM

bought the older daughter a car. the younger one almost got a car, but the mechanic ended up finding too many things wonky with it....

Kitalpha Hart 08-04-2020 08:14 PM

My parents never had the money to buy any of us a car lol

trystan830 08-04-2020 08:19 PM

well, to be fair, older daughter's car was a 1999 and we got it for her in like 2013 for a few thousand dollars that we really didn't have either!

Kaderin Triste 08-04-2020 08:39 PM

My parents never had the money to buy any of my sibs or me cars either, but once we got our licenses, they let us have/drive our grandma's old car (we pretty much inherited it from her when she couldn't drive anymore). Ngl, I loved that car, but my sibs kind of ran it into the ground. :c
