I just got reminded of a movie the other day that I hated...I mean absolutely loathed that was lauded by a bunch of people as being this brilliant piece of deconstruction cinema.
Buncha bs 9_9
(It's Falling Down if anyone's interested)

There's two movies like that I've seen, where everyone is like OMG THIS THING IS SO BRILLIANT and I'm like wtf
did these people see the same movie I did o_____o

I think a lot of 'brilliant' movies are just hyped up

Quiet Man Cometh 07-18-2011 10:22 PM

Depends on the experiences of the generalo movie going public I guess, or what the studios' and distributers' of it is.

Splice. :[ The ending pissed me off so bad. I was a thread away from snapping and screaming "Die bitch!" at the screen.

And the reboot of the Wolf Man. I don't remember anything of that movie, and I don't care to see it again.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-19-2011 04:55 AM

What is this "Wolf Man" you speak of? One of those old horror movies? Another remake? EEEeek!

Jezzen 07-19-2011 01:27 PM

There was a reboot of it that came out last year. DONT give it money.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-20-2011 03:39 AM

Not sure what you mean by "reboot" unless you're talking a film remake. To me, "Reboot" an old CG cartoon with throwbacks to TRON. ;)

yeah, that too...and critics tend to hype up movies so everyone sees them thinking they're 'supposed' to, and I think creates a feeling for some that if this movie is critically acclaimed they -supposed- to like it, so they pretend to and don't actually think about what they've seen.

ALWAYS THINK!
Because movie studios don't want you to *nodnod*

Reminds me of an argument I had with my sister.

"This is a great movie!"
"I don't like it much."
"But it's a masterpiece!"
"I know. But I don't like it."
"How can you say that! The movie is awesome! It has (x) awards and the director is this guy!"
"Yeah, it's a well done movie, I just don't like it."

Echo-chan713 07-27-2011 01:34 AM

Or their are movies where the people love it but the critics hate it

Quiet Man Cometh 07-27-2011 02:10 AM

I find I'm more interested in the stuff that goes cult, or ends up doing better after the whole theater/critic deal.

American Psycho was one, starting Christian Bale. A number of people I know have never heard of that movie, It didn't do well in theaters, can't recall what critics thought of it, but it got the most attention when it arrived on video (when I first watched it) and it developed a modest cult following.

It was definately unusual, though did have the side effect of a permanent image of Christian Bale's character enthusiastically beheading his roommate throughout my watching of Batman Begins.

Echo-chan713 07-27-2011 02:14 AM

I thought American Psycho was rated NC-17 so studios can't release it on theaters and video if it has an NC-17

Quiet Man Cometh 07-27-2011 02:25 AM

Don't know. It's considered R over here which just means no kids or anyone under 18, end of story. Apparently it did hit theaters though, but they could have been indys or select art houses or something? Film festival too I suppose. Not sure. It did hit public viewing at some point though.

Echo-chan713 07-27-2011 04:00 AM

I think it was because of the 3-way sex scene

Quiet Man Cometh 07-27-2011 04:27 AM

Ah. That didn't make it into the video or the later released DVD (at least as far as I know) though I there might be a director's cut lying around somewhere. I remember though that it was very difficult to get at the video store because the copies were frequently rented out. It was on the new release wall, not in any special category or anything, but I had never heard of it before then.
