I actually did better when I was away at college over being home, mostly because of sanity problems caused by my mom. =.=;

I wish I could afford to be away for college, I'd like to take my family out of the equation when it comes to my sanity and academics.

Only reason why I could was because of a scholarship, and only just barely. =.=; My dad had to help me pay for college and he used both his retirement money and the inheritance he had gotten when my grandmother died.

I still hate the idea of college in modern day, people just want to go in to get the skills they need for their job and leave. But they come in giving you all these additional classes when it's like "NO. Just let me learn the skills from you guys, get that fancy certificate saying I was able to put up with you guys for 4 lousy years so I can tell my employers I can put up with them as well." Textbooks are overprice, and my classes hardly ever use them to begin with. And blah! I just really hate how colleges are mostly for profit and aren't as integral to achieving a higher life anymore, especially when we see nearly every new billionaire drop out of college to continue their endeavors. -.-

Well, most of my books I used because they were math text books and using the contents helped me to study, and we had homework in the book as well. x'D But for the other classes, in total agreement there. ^^;

From what I understand, the inflation of college prices is in part a result of the government scholarships, and in part due to college ranking.

For the scholarship part - colleges can only take in so many students before overcrowding. So, when there are enough applicants to a college that are acceptable, in order to weed out several without denying them, colleges raise tuition. Scholarships and loans then undo this, so colleges raise them even more...and more scholarships/loans...

A similar situation is going on with hospital/insurance costs...

That's kind of messed up though because there are some really smart people out there that cannot afford college, so trying to cut them off like that is not equal education for all. :/

It's true. It's being able to accomplish the work given, or being able to create work for others. Then it all comes down to is MONEY.

Yes it does boil down to just money. People are studying for money. Why do people in my country go do either engineering or medicine and practically don't keep any other options opne? Money. Why are some careers/subjects ok and others not? Money. Why do my parents want me to do SO well? MONEY!

And the saying is that money is the root of all evil. =.=; Looks like it might be true considering some people will kill for it.

And yet, we don't have to fully be like that. Yes, we need resources to survive and do things, and yes, governments demand their dues, but we can try to keep helping one another. :)

I had bought cookies and I was going to giving it to the people I work with when my mom threw a fit and yelled at me because I didn't get it for 'us'. Unknown to me she had two small tins of cookies stashed in her draw in her desk and she still had two bags of candy. =.=;

Hmmm! Sushi! I haven't had any for a while. x'D The chinese buffet you have to pay extra for the sushi, and I think its for each time you grab something and what you grab. T-T Maybe there's a sushi restaurant near me...

Why can't sushi be as inexpensive as it is in Japan. And by inexpensive I mean like 50 cents cheaper lol.

I miss the buffet where we used to live, my meals would mostly consist of spring rolls, sushi, salmon, some other seafood they had and sweat and sour chicken. T^T This one is that minus the sushi. T^T

Colleges sell DEGREES, not EDUCATION. Work places then train people with what they actually need to know for that job. Sometimes I think a college degree is just a fancy way of saying "I can learn good."

That said, I am going for my 2nd Master's Degree. It's $3500 per class, but I am following my 12th grade Physics teacher's advice. "When it comes to higher education, if someone isn't paying the bill FOR you, you shouldn't be going." My job is paying, as long as I get above a certain grade for each class. They paid for the first Master's, too, and the last year of my undergraduate. ENGINEERING. :p-tongue:

If it wasn't for the fact that Physics drives me bonkers my dad probably would have pushed me to go that route since I love doing labs with people I know I can rely on. XD

As a warning, that can go sour - if everyone uses the company's offer to pay for part of college, it would likely have to give up that benefit...but, yeah I can agree with much of that statement.

I probably would have been good with that degree working in a science museum, like the ones that let you do cool stuff because that's what I would be into. XD What drove me bonkers with the Physics though was they give you one or two things and expect you to find out like five things from all these different formulas and you have to use the formula even if you can just grab the answer from one of the other formulas because its right smack in your face. ^^; And to me it kind of felt like I was a dog chasing its own tail. ^^;

My employer has been offering the service for decades. They have slimmed it down some... You used to get 100 shares of company stock after you finished your degree if you stuck around for 5 years, and you used to be able to get a degree in ANYTHING.

But the stock has gone away (not enough incentive apparently), and has been replaced with the requirement that if you leave (by your decision - those hit by layoffs are exempt) you have to pay the company back for any classes they paid for in the last two years.
The degrees have been limited, as well, to only those useful to the company. Too many people going to med school and then leaving. :p-nod:
There's also a limit of two degrees per type/level per person (so 2 associates, 2 bachelors, 2 masters, 2 doctorates, unlimited certificates) unless you receive special management approval.

It's a huge company, and a very small percentage of people actually use the program. Most are happier to not be going to school anymore.


But you are right. In some companies, or some careers, or without some of the limitations my company places on it, it could become a liability for the company rather than a good incentive for the workforce.


@ml1201, I can understand why you felt that way! My High School physics teacher let us program all the equations into our graphing calculators, and keep a "cheat sheet" index card with whatever we wanted on it, so his tests were actually easier because of all the equations. (He liked to put trick questions on there, but all you had to do was line up the units so they'd cancel out correctly and then you knew you picked the right equation.) When I got to college, I kept falling asleep during Physics (I couldn't help it!) and I got an A anyway, so my High School teacher was really great at what he did.

My mom taught me several work-arounds for basic mechanical physics equations, and I have a natural interest in electricity, astronomy, and magnetism...so...

On an unrelated note, I'll need to revive some threads in the near future (Pagan Inn, some "count to x" games, and all...just hope some of them don't have me as the last poster...) - have too much to do today, but I find that activity picks up when conversations aren't limited to a few threads...

I was actually playing a game on my calculator in my Physics I class and still got an A for the class. x'D At least I wasn't nodding off like some of the people sitting in the front row. Sadly the reason was because the presentation was done via powerpiont. ^^;

Agave Nectar is like Cactus-honey, and is a good alternative to the sugar-heavy honey that bees produce (for those who are hypoglycemic)...while tasting better than Illusion's "poo-honey"

I don't like Physics, but that's only when I have to write tests for it. I don't mind reading and mulling over Physics to pass time, it's like thinking over someone else's philosophy. Makes you think and come up with stuff of your own.
Like the concept of God. People ask me whether I believe in God which is a stupid question; I just don't believe in the general definition of God. The main reason people have for saying they DON'T believe is that they don't think God can be so good or whatever if the world is so messed up and he's controlling it, and because religion causes problems in the form of communalism, etc.
Seriously how can people think God controls everything? That's so immature, defining God so you can blame everything on it. If the world is messed up don't blame God, it's people who're messing it up!
And then there's the thing of, at some point something must have come from nothing. But even what we call 'nothing', emptiness, space, vacuum, was created! What must there have been, before there was nothing? I just call that thing 'God'. The thing which created the world, or from which the world was created. It's sufficiently abstract and imagination-defying. I'm sure that's how the idea came up originally, I have no idea where the other rubbish piled on from.

You both make very good points. XD I personally see it as if something cannot be explained scientifically then it was caused by an undefined force that is basically equated to God. :3 My dad is of the same belief because he's a computer scientist. :3
