I'm having that issue with my character I want to cosplay. The best option is Aescellus' jacket but it's the wrong colour. Need black.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-12-2011 09:03 PM

Just thinking... I did start writing up a narrative version of the plot of my game. I think I'll post that in the writing forum, if anyone wants to read it while I'm still putting the finishing touches on everything.

Unfortunately, I never got very far with it.

Umm... Okay... If I had even a remote interest in seeing this show before, it's completely gone now.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-12-2011 11:43 PM

I know I've complained about it as its been going on, but I did end up watching the entire season, but... there is no way I'm watching any more, even if they do get the show renewed.

And then, on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Game of Thrones was appallingly well-done this week, and... we even had a battle with a knight wearing full plate against a barbarian and... *gasp* *shock* his armor actually worked. Is that a first for the cinema industry? I don't think I've ever seen armor actually save the wearer from a lethal blow in any other film or show that I've seen.

Take LotR, for example. The men of Gondor might as well be wearing Sir Leontes' pajamas for all the good their armor does them. It was just so rewarding seeing a knight actually perform like a knight on t.v. for once.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 12:27 AM

Heh. I never really paid that much attention to the LOTR battles. I'll have to have a closer look. Of course, the effectiveness of all armour depends on the weapon it's trying to stand against. I think there's yet to be any significant defence for a mace or club upside the head that doesn't involve being blinded by really tall neck guards.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 12:30 AM

I'm not positive, but I think the "lethal chest slash" is some kind of TvTrope. If not, it should be, given how often it happens in films.

Which is what made this so awesome, is that it's looking like the barbarian guy is going to kill the knight with one of those, but then he does a chest slash on him and all the sudden, everyone realizes at once, "hey, he's wearing plate and mail" right before the knight kills the guy for thinking he's in a less realistic fantasy movie. :p

Edit: also, and you know, that's thing. The Dothraki don't use any kind of armor, and so, they've never developed weapons to counteract it; they mainly wield some kind of khopesh/scimitar hybrid, which... as a light-weight cutting blade, is about as useful as a butter knife against plate armor.

Because... you know, these guys didn't go into battle historically wearing 100 pounds of metal for fun; armor worked, especially against cutting weapons, which is what makes the LotR chest slash so ridiculous. Why should Gondor even waste the resources armoring their troops if the armor doesn't help them survive?

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 12:54 AM

Chest slash as in the *scrape* I'm dead!! variety?

The Dothraki don't actually need to wear armour, they just need to fight against it (the flail was pioneered by the European peasantry after all ;)) but from what I recall armoured knights were not necessarily on that list.

How long did the battle actually last? Since, you know, 100 pounds of metal armour is not condusive to marathons or more than maybe a few swings. Especially if you were knocked off a horse and needed a crane to get back on it again.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 01:01 AM

Well, 100 pounds is an exaggeration. More like 40. And seeing as Ser Jorah is an exiled knight from a different continent, I guess the Dothraki don't run into heavy armor a whole lot as they haven't adapted tactics against it.

And, actually, assuming a suit of plate was custom-made by a blacksmith who knew what he was doing, a knight should have been able to (and they did in fact) do cartwheels and backflips while armored.

I believe that whole "needing a crane to get on their horse" thing was for tourney armor, which was a lot bulkier and heavier to make jousting safer.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 01:05 AM

Most likely. Didn't know there was much of a differnce with tournament armour and regular armour except that one was likely frillier with more decoration.

CupcakeDolly 06-13-2011 01:24 AM

Hm... I wonder how hard it would be to convince Suzerain to start a roleplay...? *ponders*

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 01:50 AM

Heh. Bribery maybe? Roleplay posts equal aurumn after all. :)

CupcakeDolly 06-13-2011 02:10 AM

S'true. Especially big long posts. =3

There just aren't a lot of good writers who are roleplaying out there, and I'm guessing he'd be one of the few who would happily do a non-romantic story.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 06:38 AM

I think that's a distinct possibility.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 09:09 AM

I have considered doing a roleplay, it's just... I don't have any ideas. I'd rather not just be making it up completely as I went along. I'd have to put a fair bit of thought into what I wanted to do, before-hand, but... I will consider it.

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 11:00 AM

As long as it's non-romantic I'm sure Suzerain will go for it ;)

As for me I want to RP but lack of motivation to give it the time required makes me hold off for now.

Yeah, pretty much this. I just need to come up with an idea or dig one up out of my archives. Like I said, I'll give it some thought.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 07:41 PM

You might be surprised with what you ultimately come up with. I like the semi-improv nature of role-play, kinda like the group story that's going but with more structure. Still, I have to come up with ideas and such faster than is my normal speed.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 07:55 PM

That's a good point. I just worry about consistency. But, then... it's not really story-telling, or at least not in the traditional way, so maybe that isn't as important.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 07:59 PM

Mine certainly doesn't have much of a plot, just a launch point, but the more opportinity you can work into that, I think, the better things will start off. There doesn't need to be a specific story set up, but lots of fodder helps.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 08:01 PM

Yeah, that was more what I was talking about, coming up with a beginning setting that has a lot of options to pursue. And, you know, I'd rather not be making things up completely off the cuff.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 08:04 PM

Yeah. It's not a bad skill though, especially when it comes to running DnD games where one prepares for 5 different scenarios and inevitably they pick option 6. -.-

I've pretty much stopped depending on PCs to go where I want them to. Much better to have a scenario that will chase them down rather than one that requires they show up at the precise time - or at all.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 08:20 PM

Yes, malleable plot points seem to be in order. I think I can work with that.

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 08:24 PM

Haha, Quiet, that reminds me of my times playing DnD. No one ever wanted to follow what was basically the neon signs the GM was leaving for us, and I was a lot less open to speak my mind back then so I just followed everyone else around.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 08:43 PM

Heh, when I used to play, I'd always demand extremely specific details from the DM... mostly out of paranoia, but it was well-justified in some cases. :p

Oh, and if I can figure out how to get it to compress properly, my game should be ready to play tonight.

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 08:44 PM

Tonight O.O I don't know if I'll have time tonight but if so... -drool-

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 08:56 PM

It would have been up already, but I have too many audio files and the game's compressor can't handle them, so I have to compress them separately with WinRAR and you'll have to extract them to the game's audio folder to get it to work right.

I'll write up some detailed instructions (though it's really not too bad) assuming this way actually works. Gonna check on my dad's computer once it finishes uploading.

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 08:58 PM

I'm sure it will work fine if everything is in the right place, but I guess we'll see, yes?

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 08:59 PM

Yeah. It would have been a lot easier if the compress tool with the maker had worked. On the order of... "download, press play, done" :p

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 09:08 PM

Well of course that would be easier...but I'm sure everything will work out fine :p

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 09:17 PM

Despite my cynicism, I do think this is going to work.

Oh, and I wrote up a boss bestiary and a treasure list by location, which should help with actually getting through the game. Don't have the motivation to do a full walkthrough at the moment.

Anyway, I'll make a new thread in Gamer Heaven once it's ready to go, with all the links in one post.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 09:27 PM

No walkthroughs until someone finishes the game on their own. :p. Too easy otherwise. ;)

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 09:29 PM

For a game that's been tested, maybe. :p

For all I know, I'm so bad at game design it's horribly confusing where to go next. :p (let us hope not, though.)

And, you know, the equipment list at least is kind of necessary, since I have yet to find a script that'll let me display all of an item's properties (it just gives the basic attack+/defense+ whatever values, not whether it does slashing damage or inflicts poison or whatever.)

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 09:32 PM

Ah. That's annoying.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 09:35 PM

It was the whole reason I made that chart in the first place, since... I have all these weapons, and just playing the game on its own, you'd think that, in every case, there's one weapon that's clearly, usually quite a bit, superior because it has the highest attributes, but... those tend to have no special effects. Hence my list. :p

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 09:56 PM

And no way to add a description in game about it huh?

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 09:59 PM

Not with just the basic commands of the engine. It'd have to be a script that modifies the way the items get displayed in the menu. I'd have to request something like that from the community, that's way beyond me. They might even charge for it, I don't know.

I mean, I could code a really complicated event like a Book of Armaments or something that exists to interact with in the game, but that would be a lot of work and pretty counter-intuitive for gameplay purposes.

Serra Britt 06-13-2011 10:08 PM

Yea, unless it's actually in the menu or something to look up, with unlocked entries as you get the items...nah. Just go with a separate list, I know you loved those Dragon Quest ones... xD

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 10:11 PM

Uh... yeah, the thought of coding it to unlock entries as they were discovered is flat-out terrifying. I try to stay away from variables wherever possible, and, uh... yeah. That's not happening. I'd sooner learn how to script it myself. :p

I wish I could add pics to my chart, but even if I painstakingly cut them out of the huge item sheet (we're talking like 2000+ item icons here) I have, they're way too small to be visible in the chart.

Quiet Man Cometh 06-13-2011 10:44 PM

Group story! *Scampers off*

Suzerain of Sheol 06-13-2011 10:45 PM

Hey! Get back here! *grabs empty air*

Oh, and, it totally works. *Dances in joy* *not really*
