They *are* to all appearances, but normally the possessing soul would be freed after being shocked out of the body by that kind of violence. Granted, Thomas' theurgic fire would vaporize their spirits pretty fast, but there should still be some residue. But there isn't.

Weird....

Oh okay. So there ARE souls in there, they just for some reason don't exist after being...erm...purged.
