but yeah, though to be fair there have also been studies done that creatures that previously were thought to feel pain do not, creatures like butterflies do not feel pain while grass feels it acutely. nature is seriously crazy XD

jfc cho get out of my thread, AGAIN?

it's like the randomizer knew this conversation would happen.

uh, actually I'm a college student going into nursing. I've taken plenty of biology and chemistry to know a thing or two about what I'm talking about. Trees and all plants lack the ability to process pain, even if they are able to respond to environmental stimuli.

unless you can find a reputable, peer-reviewed study published in a scholarly journal, telling me to "pick up a book" is hardly going to support your point.

littl3chocobo 12-19-2015 11:22 PM

my feelings on fake trees is mixed X_____x on the one hand they can be used for many years consecutively but on the other the bulk are made of plastic which is not biodegradable and kills so many creatures both directly and indirectly

Den 12-19-2015 11:23 PM

...All I'mma say is this. It's all well and good to want to protect life, but at the same time, dirt doesn't digest well, so I'm gonna be over in my corner of the 'net, enjoying a *bleeping* cheeseburger with tomatoes and lettuce.

Gallagher 12-19-2015 11:29 PM

lol den, i don't particularly care what gets eaten so long as eating it won't wipe out the entire species, and people respect that it was alive. it's not cool to abuse people, animals, or plants.

Lawtan 12-19-2015 11:31 PM

Sorry, Den.
*Offers some ketchup*

*Largely agree with Galla*

littl3chocobo 12-19-2015 11:31 PM

what studies? many plants have the same neurochemicals that animals use and use them in similar ways under the same stimuli and on top of that when damaged many send out chemical distressors that either cause neighboring plants to put out defenses or call other animals(primarily ants, beetles and the like) to their aid

here, get started with wiki;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plant_...8physiology%29

if you are capable of reading that then maybe i can upgrade you to actual books on the subject, there are many >x>

galla, the next time i get the word give it to the post below me, ok?

Same here, Galla. There's a difference between doing things in a sustainable way and just destroying it all and letting the Powers That Be sort it out in the end. I'm also kinda cranky right now, and feeling like a bitchy old lady.

Yay for Law! Ketchup goes good on burgers, imo. On top of an egg over medium so it's not too runny, but not fried all the way through...

Chocobo, you do realize anyone who can make an account can edit a wikipedia page, correct?

thankyou! though i would like to amend it to also say 'or cause unnessisary duress for other living creatures' XD at least for myself

littl3chocobo 12-19-2015 11:34 PM

yeah, but enough of it is correct that i feel comfortable linking it. assuredly plants are something i know a lot about XD

Gallagher 12-19-2015 11:34 PM

sure thing, cho

why so cranky, den?

ehh, i don't respect fungus, that shit takes over brains and ruins pizzas

littl3chocobo 12-19-2015 11:36 PM

whaaaaaat, i /love/ my fungal pizzas ?(

Partially 'cause it's cold here, and partially 'cause I can't find the DVD I wanted to watch... and I may have to have the 'Rents buy me a new one for Christmas (Transformers Age of Extinction. I like the stupidity of parts of it, and the characters are interesting, even if the story's kinda 'meh').

...But some fungi are nommy and good for you... T_T Galla, you're mean*!

*I kid. I know not everyone can hack mushrooms or other fungi. I just like 'shrooms on pizza, and pretty much anywhere I can get 'em.

okay, I'm only going to say this once. Stop patronizing me. I am adult. I know how to read. If you can't manage to remain respectable while debating, then I'm just not going to bother.

I know how plants respond to environmental stimuli and use chemical signals to communicate information. These are all autonomous processes, none of which require a neural network. Microorganisms do the same thing, as do the cells in your body. None of this implies the ability to feel pain.

if you're going to make a factual, scientific claim ("Trees can feel pain") then you need to support it with scientific, empirical evidence. Hence, a published study. If you can manage that, then by all means, I will change my mind about cutting down trees for Christmas.

otherwise, you're making baseless claims, and I don't change my behavior on the baseless claims of strangers on the internet.

Lawtan 12-19-2015 11:40 PM

My Night of the Fungal Dead! NOOOOO!

CONGRATS!

and since you don't want your prize, and i don't want your prize, and you still don't want your prize, it goes TO DEN CONGRATS DEN!

Den 12-19-2015 11:46 PM

All I know is that when I was in high school, we were NOT allowed to cite Wikipedia as a source because of the editability. Therefore, I am really reluctant to accept it as evidence in a discussion on ANY matter. It, to me, is more of a database with information on subjects, but again, due to its editability, it's not the most reliable source.

And I'm going to do my best to try and change the subject to something a bit more pleasant.

Does anyone have a favorite holiday movie they would be willing to recommend?

Gallagher 12-19-2015 11:48 PM

I don't have many that I like, but my favorite is easily The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus

Lawtan 12-19-2015 11:50 PM

One sec

(Does Casper's Boo Moon count? I used to watch it on my folk's Beta player...decades after Beta was dead...with a grouping of christmas specials)

AND THAT! GALLA SAID ONE OF MY FAVORITES!

Sorry...

Den 12-19-2015 11:51 PM

I don't think I've seen that one...

"Frozen" is up there on my list... Yes, because of "Let It Go". Yes, I am a grown woman who likes a children's movie. Deal with it. :D

I really didn't, and still don't, care for "It's a Wonderful Life".

Tas 12-19-2015 11:52 PM

I'm honestly not a huge fan of holiday movies. Or holiday music.

which is odd, because Christmas is my favorite holiday.

*shrug*

Den 12-20-2015 12:01 AM

Nothing wrong with that. I have a rule that I don't start playing "Christmas" music 'til Black Friday at the earliest. But last year, I got burnt out on it 'cause I worked retail.

Lawtan 12-20-2015 12:02 AM

Intro of Life and Adventures of Santa Claus

Depends on the music. I like older music and their renditions usually. So, often can be considered religious (Pagan, Christian, Jewish, what have you) - Less so the more modern music.

littl3chocobo 12-20-2015 12:11 AM

as someone who has made several childish and frankly rude comments i don't feel guilty about patronizing you. you are one of those people who does not use their eyes and brains to think but instead blindly meanders through life with no respect for other lifeforms

there are a couple, mostly all i could recommend are actual books. most studies are done through educational institutions or else are funded by private citizens and are not done through the government or commercial institutions which is where large-number statistics are generally conducted

i suggest work done by heidi appel, frank khnemann, david rhoades and the like

littl3chocobo 12-20-2015 12:12 AM

jeez XD the topic moved on, haha

congrats den<3

um, well i have had a tv for like 2 months now and i have not seen any holiday movies but i really like the music from nightmare before christmas XD

Gallagher 12-20-2015 12:26 AM

nightmare before christmas was always really popular with everyone i knew, so i got suuuper tired of it. there's only so much singing along while i'm trying to watch the gd movie i can handle.

Lawtan 12-20-2015 12:31 AM

(Dad hates the concept of Halloween and Christmas mixing, but likes Star Wars and Christmas mixing...minus the Lucas
This is not the Star Wars Christmas Special

Go silent protagonist!

Den 12-20-2015 12:39 AM

*snerk* Galla, you would've been driven nuts by my friends and I a couple weeks ago. We watched "Fiddler on the Roof", and everyone who had seen it before ended up sitting together, and singing along with the songs, myself included.

Gallagher 12-20-2015 12:42 AM

i literally cannot handle it when people sing the songs in a movie, OR REPEAT THE LINES THEY LIKE.

i seriously can't. it's the easiest way to make me walk out of the room and hate the movie at the same time.

for serious. if you want me to like something, DON'T SAY THE GD LINES. DON'T DO IT. DO NOT.

littl3chocobo 12-20-2015 12:45 AM

i'mma call you and leave you voicemail all badly sung musicals all the time!

Gallagher 12-20-2015 12:45 AM

ugguuuuu, don't do the thing, whyyy

Pinkie 12-20-2015 01:02 AM

Because they can galls that's why

littl3chocobo 12-20-2015 01:06 AM

pinkie knows what's what XD

also the gookie junk on my arm is mostly dry so i can type again XD

Lawtan 12-20-2015 01:33 AM

*Tends to be quiet as a churchmouse outside of the car. In the car, I tend to strain my voice.

littl3chocobo 12-20-2015 01:35 AM

so i need to get you into a vehicle?

Lawtan 12-20-2015 01:40 AM

To get me to sing? Pretty much.

Fulkth 12-20-2015 02:04 AM

I like it when I get people to sing when they don't want to. It amuses me. :D

Den 12-20-2015 02:16 AM

I like to sing... If I could, I'd go do Kareoke every bleedin' day.

littl3chocobo 12-20-2015 02:18 AM

i sing along XD the exception for me is the song that never ends XD

Ginger 12-20-2015 03:42 AM

I can't stand people who repeat along with movies, either. I know the lines but I don't feel the need to repeat something that I already know is going to be said. I kinda like singing along with musicals, though. "You're the one that I want, you are the one I want, oo oo ooo!"
