Raven raised an eyebrow, still surprised that Wolfe was actually taking him seriously. But he still seemed confident. "Alright," he agreed.
Wolfe nodded as the resort came in site.
-- "Hey Nic," Laurel asked quietly as she stroked his hair, "What made you decide to put together that elaborate date?" |
Nic was silent for awhile before replying, "I wanted you to be happy."
Laurel smiled a little as she leaned down and nuzzled his neck, "I've always felt that you have a warm soul," she whispered.
Nic didn't say anything as he rubbed her back a little.
Laurel sighed a little, content, "Are you happy?" she asked quietly.
Nic nodded a little after awhile.
Laurel looked relieved, "... Why... did you punch the wall?" she ventured to ask after a moment.
Nic was silent for a long time before replying, "I don't know."
Laurel frowned a little, pulling away to get a look at his face, "Is that why... you had nightmares?" she asked quietly.
"... I don't know," Nic repeated, wondering why she had brought this up.
Laurel sighed a little, "Don't you think that's important to figure out?" she asked carefully.
"... Huh?" Nic asked, not following.
"You should figure out what made you so upset," Laurel repeated.
Nic still seemed confused.
"... Don't you want to know why you're upset?" Laurel asked quietly, "Then maybe you can stop yourself from getting upset the next time something happens."
Nic seemed to be having trouble following Laurel's logic. "I'm not upset," he told her.
"But you were... obviously... you punched a wall," Laurel replied.
"... I'm not upset now," Nic reiterated.
"But you were... so you should figure out why," Laurel tried again, "So it doesn't happen again."
Nic seemed to be having trouble connecting why the past would effect the future.
Laurel thought about it for a moment, "Okay... think about it this way," she said quietly, "Say... I was allergic to chocolate. I had a reaction when I ate chocolate but I didn't know it was the chocolate and I never bothered to figure out what it was. So I kept eating chocolate. Wouldn't that be bad?"
"... Do you?" Nic asked.
Laurel muttered something under her breath, "No!" she snapped.
"Okay..." Nic replied, trying to think through the logic of her previous statement after clearing that up. "... I suppose you wouldn't try to figure out what was causing the reaction unless it was bad enough that it prompted you to do something about it."
Laurel nodded, "And wasn't punching a wall bad enough?"
Nic blinked, not thinking so.
Laurel was silent for awhile, "... Then how about hurting me?" she muttered, "You left again, boulder."
"No, I didn't," Nic replied.
Laurel rolled her eyes a little, "Not mentally. You walked out physically. So much better," she snapped.
Nic was very confused. "... I left the pool because if I punched James you'd get upset."
Laurel blinked, "Then why didn't you just say that yesterday? Why did you storm off to the gun range without a word?" she demanded.
"... If you would have heard me say something in an angry tone, you'd get upset," Nic replied.
"Less upset than when you completely ignore me! I hate it when you treat me like I don't exist! I've had enough of that in my life," Laurel replied hotly.
"... You'd rather I yell at you," Nic clarified.
Laurel paused to think about that, then she looked right into Nic's eyes. "Yes," she stated seriously.
Nic didn't seem too happy, but he nodded.
Laurel continued to stare at him, "Why did you want to punch James?" she asked next.
"I don't know," Nic replied, getting tired of this conversation.
Laurel grunted and pulled away, swinging her legs off the edge of the bed. "Fine," she muttered.
