I always like the vast array of characters in Breath of Fire. I remember in the first one I got the bad ending because I couldn't figure out how to use the special dragon form. I couldn't figure out why it wasn't available until I unfused Karn...

Suzerain of Sheol 06-05-2011 09:26 AM

That was what I always liked about those games, how unique all the characters were in battle. Karn was awesome.

I don't think I ever finished the first game. I got stuck in the part where you're stuck in a nightmare or something and gave up.

That part has tough battles and some annoying puzzles. I don't remember exactly how to get out of that.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-05-2011 11:26 AM

I actually had the official strategy guide for the game, too, so either that section was unnecessarily difficult, or the guide was completely inadequate to help me through. Or both. :p

Serra Britt 06-05-2011 11:30 AM

I think I remember getting stuck there but I'm afraid the first time I played Breath of Fire was pretty close to when it first game out. I played it again more recently but I'm seriously at a loss as to the particulars of the nightmare, I just remember there being one.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-05-2011 11:34 AM

I think I played it when I was 8 or 9, which we would be... 12 or so years ago. I barely remember anything about the game, honestly. That part just stuck out because I got stumped there.

I had a love/hate feeling for the HP bars on the enemies in that game. For the one part it was nice to see them, but on the other hand the bosses cheated and kept going when the bar got to zero. I thought the other games did it better, with the HP bars being a mystery until you killed an enemy once, so bosses were always a mystery instead of pretending to die and then taunting you.

Suzerain of Sheol 06-05-2011 11:52 AM

Yeah, the second wind feature was annoying. Some of the bosses had longer second winds than their regular HP, from what I remember.

Serra Britt 06-05-2011 12:10 PM

Yes, it was kind of silly on some of them. I just learned to ignore the HP bars on the bosses and just go all out no matter how close I thought they were to death.

Have I ever mentioned that I have a pretty substantial RPG developed in RPG Maker that I've been working on for several years? You just got me thinking about tough boss fights, and some of the bosses in my game are downright mean.

Evening, Trisphites.
You're making a game?

Suzerain of Sheol 06-05-2011 01:00 PM

Evening? It's noon here. :p

And, yeah, RPG Maker is really easy-to-use PC program for making classic RPGs, but it's also rather flexible and powerful for how easy it is to learn. I can't script for anything, and I'm still mostly able to get it to do what I want, just using that standard editor. Plus, it has a really large online community full of resources to use.

That sounds like fun, I have lots of unused ideas if you need inspiration on any parts there Suzerain.

Sushi 06-05-2011 01:03 PM

@Sheol: Yeah, it's about 1:02 here. lol. Wrong word choice.

But the game thing interests me. How long have you been working on it?

Suzerain of Sheol 06-05-2011 01:09 PM

Probably four or five years, now. All told, it's about four hours long if you do everything (which is a disgusting ratio when you consider the no-doubt thousands of hours I've put into designing it).

A lot of the work has been refining things. It's easy to get a skeleton of a town done, just so I can move the story along and whatnot. Actually mapping out all the houses and designing NPCs and giving them dialogue takes a ton of time.

And then, I just love messing around with the database, making new weapons and monsters and such. I have nearly two hundred weapons made for the game already, which is probably too many, but it's fun.

Come to think of it, I could probably let you guys play it if you wanted (though I'd need to finish the last thing I was working on.) I'm pretty sure you don't even need the program to play the games made on it, just the game file, though it might take a while to download. Something to think about, though.

I need to go take care of some stuff at the moment, though. I can go into more detail about it later on.

Sushi 06-05-2011 01:10 PM

Well, I actually want to be a game tester some day. So, hit me up if you need someone to spend hours fooling with it. lol
