Double rainbow! :O
Haha that is really clever, Galla. I like it. |
Yes, yeesss. Watch me dominate yo thread.
I was tempted to try a sideways rainbow, but then I realized, lolwut? I REALLY hate myself to even think of that. (also, it's just short of a triple rainbow, actually.) |
@ Gaius - Oh good, I'm getting those freckles, I'll just have to create an avi for them later as I am in the middle of a new one now. Rare to meet a person whose favorite color is yellow. Do you mean primary yellow? Or like citrine yellow? Or dusty yellow? I hope you had a good party right before college, what year are you and what major?
As for my work...it is really complex but essentially our medical group decided to pull out of a job at the last minute due to ethical concerns and so there is a huge uproar and it is very unpleasant. I'm just keeping my head low and hope to avoid any fallout. @ Gallagher - Yay for stalkage! Sexy McSexybutt, huh? Okaaaaay. *grins* Hahaha! Well what can I say about your rainbow avi? I can do nothing but sigh. *sighs* That is so clever and tight. Not sloppy, really perfected. I have seen your avatars and that is what makes them stand out. I am not sure if you spend a lot of time or if that is just a natural touch you have like the assured brushstrokes that come quickly to a master artist, but for the most part your avatars are finely polished to the tiniest degree. Do you have a particular secret or tip you would like to share with us? I'm bad at coplays too, I don't even attempt them. You should have seen my ninja turtle, it was so funny. XD Well I am working on an avatar right now. It's turning out dark lilac and gray. We'll see if it stays that way. |
Making baseless avatars has done the most for improving my skills, I think. Even if you do use a skin, going baseless opens up a lot of layering options. The more you play with layering possibilities, the more ideas you can get to use down the road.
When I do change my avi, or enter a competition, I have a day dedicated to working on it. So yeah, I spend a good amount of time on them. The only other suggestion I have would be getting one of every common you can. They can come in handy big time with getting that dash of color in just the right place, and having one already means you can see if it works, then spend the aurum on the color you'd need. Off of that topic now - YOU SEEN MY JANK, WUT, I FEEL SO FAMOUS. |
Oh Galla, that rainbow is so sexy. So jealous. D:
I sure wish I could afford more commons. D: It's getting hard to keep up with all the items now. |
Oh bby, I kno. Commonz is good for the peoples tho.
As long as they don't kill you, Gally, I'll be happy with them. >w>
Don't worry, we're spreading the common love around. I get to work on a big one this time. :3 OH THE COLORS!!!
I hope you're remembering our new color option minimums there, babe. -salutes-
Well, either way, as long as you don't die of recolours, Gally, I'll be happy. :3
*starts nomming on your snake tail* >w> |
No less than 80 colors on my item, Galla! **salutes back**
I actually do not have many commons. I am going to go and look at them now and start up a collection. As for baseless avatars *wibble* I'll have to see if I can try that. o_O
I really recommend commons. I think they are worth the investment because they can go into so many avatars. The newer ones that are part of sets I feel are almost DI quality (and some appeal to me even more than the DIs) and all of them are just so flexible because they come in so many colors.
Yeah, there are a few really cheap basics that I would suggest (like headbands, panties/thongs, and some belts), but for the most part, investing in the higher end commons can really come in handy because you buy them once and all your colors are there.
Baseless with a skin is the easiest to start with. It's pretty much the same, but you can play with little details, like putting hair under your skin so the bangs don't show, or covering up the better part of a skirt so it only pokes out at the sides, like a butt cape. As you get more and more commons to fill in gaps the DIs and event items leave behind, you can actually construct your own body, like I've done for my snake here. I couldn't use any base OR skin, because they would all give me arms, which I didn't want. |
Oh wow. I noticed you didn't have any arms before, but I didn't really think too hard about it. I think it was the backgrounds making it feel crowded. Now that I look a lot closer at all the details, though, that's way cool how you put your avi together.
Yee bro, the longer you look at my jank, the cooler it gets.
Yeah, going baseless and skinless is really fun. It's just a lot of work. I need more practice going baseless first before I can add the skinless aspect as well. >w>
How does one go baseless? o_O If someone could instruct me I would be very appreciative!
Headbands, wow!! Gotta look for those. And I am just now finding out about some very nice hairstyles in the salon. Hmmm...I must say it never occurred to me to put bangs behind a skin, what a great idea. But I am not very innovative...I know I do the same things over and over. So wow, breaking out here would be very nice. Glad to see these discussions, thank you Lucid, Gallagher, Arikana and others for popping into the thread, it's quite an eye-opener. |
In the avatar editor, under the male/female bases tabs, the very last options are blank. Click that and it will remove your base completely. C:
Yeah, once you get rid of that pesky base, you get a whole new world of possibilities. I rarely have hair layering without 1-3 parts of it under my skin.
... I've been playing with this stuff for, like, ever. My preferred skin color is only an option on a couple of our DIs, not our regular bases, so yeah. I've really liked contests and challenges for breaking out of my norm, even if I don't actually wear a good portion of the avis that I make. |

Vacation was fun. Not as much me time as I'd have liked, but I got to spend a lot of quality time with friends. I'm a third year math major, still with no real career plans in mind. I just like solving puzzles is all. xD Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I'd hate to be in the middle of an ethical issue like that. That would be tough. I've had an interest in the medical field since high school though. What kind of work do you do? |
Ari...here's challenge 3...it's kind interesting, although it feels as though something is missing around the feet. I just can't figure out what to use.
Yeah, I'm not a fan with how this one turned out. :( I feel it's a bit dissonant, imo. Not sure how to help improve it though. D:
Yeah I wish I could tweak it better. I like the actual avatar but it's the back of her that seems off...
Ok first on the baseless avatar, thank you Lucid!. I am going to try that right away. That just sounds like such a fun challenge! The thought of no arms is mind boggling. I keep looking at your avi Gallagher...ever read God Emperor of Dune?
@ Gaius - Math major, I just have to say wow, I really admire that. I used to love math so much, I only did college calculus though, I really did not have time to go on since I had a really tight schedule. I'm a neurologist, my field of interest is epilepsy, I did a 2 year fellowship in neurophysiology and now I am doing remote intraoperative monitoring. @ Kali - That is a strong amount of blue at the bottom, but I like the green and yellow and blue you did otherwise! |
I felt there needed to be some blue on the bottom. Since the feet were so white it felt like something was needed.
Woo. Avatar number four of six using the Deu backgrounds is complete. :D
Interesting...I REALLY need to get those hairs.
Yeah, you should. I love using the cosmic hair. <3
I still need to add the Salon items to my quest list.
I totally overuse the cosmic hairs and wolf bangs SO much. But I could care less, I love 'em all to death. <3 Even though none of them look like my real life hair. :P
I started this avatar with the intent to use the cosmic hair and/or wolf bangs to get multicolored hair. I ended up bald instead. XD That's how my avatar process usually goes though. I give myself a personal challenge and then completely deviate from it after playing around with stuff for a while.
Yeah, that's how I work, too, when I'm making avatars. Things evolve a lot from what I plan to do. XD
I'm a lot more likely to stick to a challenge if somebody else gives it to me, because they're expecting to see it! I can give myself challenges like "use this item in this color along with that other item in that color" and then halfway through end up taking one or both items off and replacing them with something that fits where I was going with the avatar a lot better. But then it ends up not being challenging because I stray back to my usual style! D:
Yeah, I can't even keep to other people's challenges most of them time, if I do keep to it they'll either be butt ugly or I just give up on the challenge. :c
Which is why I just like creating avatars on a whim revolving around one or two items/colours/etc. only. >w< |

I like math for it's simplicity as a language across the world. Despite it's complexity at times, if you show a math problem to someone half way around the world, they can still have a chance to understand it. (Whether or not they can solve it is another issue.)
If you ever meet any extraterrestrials, show them a geometric proof of the Pythagorean theorem to determine if they are intelligent.
But seriously, yes, math is a beautiful universal language. Notation may vary, but because of its grounds in logic and basis from the laws of physics, it can be understood in a similar way across cultures. |
Yeah, math is awesome. I'm a bit rusty with it as I've not practised it in some time, but I'm still decent at it. :3

@ Gaius - Neuroscience is very interesting. It gets a bit wooly in places, but I suppose really advanced math is like that too. Epilepsy is a phenomenally interesting subject but for me, I like EEG best of all. The one naturally follows the other, but EEG interpretation is an art involving complex pattern recognition. Fun! Back on the topic of avatars, Arikana I love the new look! I had no idea that hair existed. Kali you are right, those Salon items are really important! |
