It's a shared server, yes; we don't make enough money yet to afford a dedicated server. It's a really good shared server, but apparently this event is bringing a lot of extra load.

I've been getting those two things constantly since the event started. It shows up like all the time during the fights and when I click on random parts of the site.

Is there any word on the issue? I keep getting the 503 error every time I move a page an forget the shops, it'll freeze an show nothing until I refresh the page.

yes... I suggest you check the announcements. There's a thread there fully explaining the current situation. For now, all we can do is wait.
