Lol go Illusion, Make friends!
it is possible to go through the game with out getting any exp what so ever. You really just have to keep making friends. Also I think I would rather date Undyne. We could make dinner together! BD |
Finished the game and got the true true ending.
Finally looked online for spoils on what I was doing after completing the game (I actually walked all the way back to the beginning of the game and found something interesting that only happens once and saving or loading before the credits would remove your chance of experiencing that additional easter egg. I quickly looked online about this scene and I feel good I found it on my own) I got the best ending it seems (YAAAAY!) There was the other route I could of taken, I was going to begin a 2nd playthrough, so when I opened up the game... This game. Omg. It's way too meta. |
Illusion oh my gosh yes I felt the same way when I opened the game back up. I had to watch a let's play of someone else doing the other route because of that. And also because I don't have the heart at all to kill my precious boyfriend Papyrus. Instead of playing again, I inject myself with reddit and tumblr and all the fanart and fan comics I can handle. Speaking of which, this song gave me chills. It's so good.
I did save and quit the game between finishing the last fight and walking through the barrier and hitting the credits, but I still got the easter egg that you're talking about at the very first room of the game. So I'm not sure why everyone says it goes away. **shrug** Maybe it only goes away if you walk around the town partially or something, since I saved in the throne room. |

I KNOW. Everything Papyrus is love! <3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G02RiRFCi0 I'm also partial to super intense remixes of Papyrus's theme in reimaginings where Papyrus takes Sans' place as the final boss of the genocide route. |

Best boyfriend. |
Bu-but, Papyrus is MY boyfriend! T_T
I'm sure he'd want us to share him. You've seen "Pafriskus," right? If not, behold the glory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHXfdh6tp4o |

Been up all night playing the bad playthrough and..
|
Noooooooo! Illu you ruined everything! T______T You know that he knows what you did, right?!? He has a photo from the good ending! And, and, and Papyrus! D': You're a monster.
I have a friend who is also at that part and she can't get past it either. I don't think I would be able to either. Dodging too hard. Can't see the bullets on the screen through my many tears. |
Lmao Lucid, Illusion Stay Determined!
The person I am watching finally got to Sans though my friend kind of spoiled the ending for me. I am hella amused to see what you guys have to say about it. |
I can't get past that part, Illusion. I'm stuck there. It's too hard. :<
|
Have you tried sparing him?
He is second-best character. After Papyrus, of course. |
I just finished genocide. That was terrible. If there was no poison proc it would had been so much better.
|
eh, I dunno about that. o.o
due to the lack of invincibility frames, KR keeps you from instantly dying whenever you take damage. |
I have to say though... I had really bad time. xD
|
oh it is such a bad time
|
Well, he did warn you. :P
And yeah, I don't think it's poison at all. It's just lack of invincibility combined with an Earthbound-style rolling damage meter that lets you die a bit slower to make up for it. |
|
That video is so glorious. It's cool to imagine how the fights would actually look playing out in real life.
|
So, I'm a little late on this one, but thought I'd share my thoughts. I did the neutral and good endings, and I might go back at some point to beat Sans (only lasted 9 turns against him after like 25 tries), but at this point I feel reasonably satisfied with the time spent with the game.
I think I have a weird perspective on it, though. I have this strange sort of masochism where I enjoy experiencing art that causes me pain, so going through pacifist and coming to love all these characters only to go back and viciously murder them was a really memorable, meaningful experience for me. Not because I enjoyed killing them, but rather because it was amazing how bad the game could make me feel about doing it. The integration of the mechanics into the storytelling is such a powerful device to get you engaged into the story, and I have to say, I think my favorite moment in the entire game was the fight against Undyne the Undying. Being to able to be a part of such a phenomenal tragedy was really rewarding. Even though she was incredibly hard for me to beat, that's precisely what made it so meaningful -- she was doing everything she possibly could to stop me, because she absolutely had to, but lo and behold with DETERMINATION she fell like all the others. In a way, I almost felt proud to have brought out the best in her like that. My favorite character, though, is by far Flowey, not only for how heart-breaking his story is, but I just love the way he functions as a player-proxy. In-universe he behaves exactly the way anyone else would when playing the usual rpg, and given his situation it's not hard to see why a position of total solipsism on his part seems completely justified. Before you come along, he's really the only thing that's real in his reality, and even when that power is stripped away from him, the way he intermediates between you the player and the linear characters of the setting is really fascinating, I find. From what I've seen, a lot of people hate him or get really scared of him in Neutral, but that was one of my favorite parts of the game. When he started crashing the program and messing with reality, the whole time I was just like "Oh my God, yes, let's do this, Flowey! Show me how deep the rabbit hole goes! Make me regret my pitiful existence!" One of the reasons I'm not too keen to beat Sans is that I actually really don't want to kill Flowey. :/ Not even cause I feel particularly worse about hurting him compared to the other characters, just that I really don't like seeing him reduced to such a pitiful state. I know it makes sense in the canon that Chara's evil is on a whole different level from anything he conceived in boredom, but... I was kind of rooting for him the whole time. :P I know the point of genocide is to make the player feel bad with a really unsatisfying ending, but part of me would have enjoyed seeing Chara and Flowey reunite in that awful world they found themselves in after Chara's killing spree. They're the only people in that universe who can really understand each other, and I guess that's what makes Chara so damned evil, in the end. Anyway, really more of a work of art than a game, in my opinion. Was an incredible experience. Lots of food for thought, throughout. In a way, though, I actually find Chara's role in Genocide to run counter to the message of the game. I felt more like I was just watching her carrying out the genocide, I didn't feel particularly guilty for it. If she hadn't been a thing, I might have had a harder time going along with it. She literally deprives you of agency in the end, but I kind of feel like she's been doing that the whole time. Going to stop typing there, because there are a lot of things I can say about this game and this is getting long. :P |
Don't feel bad about Sans. 25 turns isn't very many at all. (Tip: Use the Burnt Pan instead of the True Knife.) It took me 96 (only managed to beat him last week), another friend of mine 60, and another friend over 200 before he stopped counting.
|
Part of my problem is, for whatever reason, my Razer controller is just slightly imprecise with the analog stick, and being left-handed, not having WASD for keyboard controls make it that much harder for me to dodge accurately.
|
My first reaction would be to just move the keyboard over and use my left hand on the arrow keys. :P I've also been known to put both hands on the arrow keys (left ring finger on left, left middle on up, right middle on down, right ring on right, more comfortable and intuitive than it sounds).
For a few attempts, when my hands were hurting from using the keyboard too much, I tried remapping my Gravis GamePad Pro to have both the D-pad and the face buttons bound to the arrow keys. Not trying to map analog in there helps with the precision issues, and having two sets of inputs helps with quick maneuvers. It took some time getting used to, but it worked pretty well for me once I did. |
Hmm, that might be worth trying.
I think I might be able to do fairly well if I could just master the alternating white and cyan bone attack that he does early on, I always end up eating like 90 damage there and it throws me off for the entire fight. |
That one took me a long time, too. If you have near-frame-precise timing you can do it with only hitting the up button. Otherwise, do short hops left over the first and second white bones, a single long hop right over the third and fourth, and then short hops right over the rest.
|
So, in other words, "git gud, scrub". :P
I'll give it another try tomorrow and see how it goes. |
No, I can't do the frame-precise way either. :P I'm just sharing the technique that DID work for me, and it's not unreasonably difficult to use it. I can get through that attack undamaged about half the time, and I only get nicked the other half.
|
I think I got around 40 or 50 tries with Sans. I don't remember off bat.
But what's most impressive with undertale and where other games should take not is how it interacts with the user. Toby Fox did everything masterfully. Flowey's evil was something that I never could imagine becoming justify until I the main character took his role and had the power he so had. To reset, retry, or go back to see different outcomes. Making people believe the world is real and every character have something to like even though everyone is confused and wanting to kill you at first due to a misunderstanding and pressure of the world they live in. It all makes sense and just clicks together. The plot isn't as simple as it makes it out to be, being able to make something deep with an extra layer behind is something that a lot of game developers miss. Most developers want something like that and strive for it but end up with a complete mess because they forgot to tell the original story. A prime example of this in movie form is The Lorax trying to copy the backstory within a movie that Pixar's Wall'E did so masterfully. I'm really looking forward to whatever Toby is working on now. Nintendo did reach out to him (Undertale port?) But it's been speculation that they want him to work on a new Earthbound which is probably a dream of his. This is one of those games that only happen once every so often. The last game that was able to make such a positive reaction towards was Journey for the PS3 (now PS4.) |
Well, I made it to his second form twice last night. I think I'm improving.
And wait, Illusion, isn't the very thought that most of the monsters are trying to kill you itself a misunderstanding? I thought the whole point of LOVE was that the monsters have such innocent souls (SOULS?) that even negative thoughts from a human can cause them serious harm. Asgore's extreme reluctance to fight you, even though he's supposed to be the one with the greatest impetus to kill you, would seem to support that. I guess it's the difference between Frisk turning enemies into friends, and Frisk overcoming their inherent fear of the situation they find themselves in to realize that the monsters are all mostly friendly. |
When you say second form, do you mean when he offers to spare you? Good job. :D
I find the second half to require less precision but be more punishing when you do take a hit. With the exception of the wall-slam attacks and one attack that has two columns of bones with very little space between them, everything in the second half is reasonably easy to dodge if you're calm and aware once you learn the patterns, but it punishes you harder when you do take the hit. I hope it's not a spoiler to point out that the bones can still hurt you when it's your turn. |
Well, Coda, about the same time as your post there he just splattered me with his special attack. I made it all the way to the Unlimited Gaster Works at the end, my heart just happened to be on the wrong side of the box when they started spinning. Definitely getting better, though, on that run I didn't even need to heal until the second part. I think I'll get him soon (and then wonder why I bothered...)
|
I can get through the first half without needing to heal about half the time (and almost never more than once), and then I use one or two Legendary Heroes during the break where he spares you. I've gotten to the final attack with the Pie, the Noodles, and the Face Steak still in my inventory before, though both times I've actually finished it were times when I ran out of healing items before I reached the end.
|
Not going to lie, it felt really disheartening to die with a bunch of healing items still left. Feels like I just got careless with my health. Oh, well.
|
I know that feeling all too well. Beating yourself up over getting sloppy and/or cocky.
I probably could have knocked about 30 attempts off of my count if I just didn't try to play the game when I wasn't in a proper state of mind to be precise about it. |
I can't get past Undyne the Undying, but that's because I'm terrible at games, lol.
|
Undyne took me 24 attempts. Those darn yellow arrows! She's mostly a memorization fight.
EDIT: Actually, the yellow arrows are annoying, but the rotating spear rings are worse. x.x |
I was stuck on her for a while, but I found using the armor you can buy from the turtle vendor that increases your i-frames, and using the Sea Tea he sells which increases your heart's movement speed, made her really easy. I beat her the first try after I went back and bought those. Don't get the weapon he sells though, it's weaker than the ballet shoes and the i-frame buff doesn't stack supposedly.
|
I used the Torn Notebook instead of the Cloudy Glasses so that I could wear the Apron for the HP regeneration, but yes, the +INV was wonderful.
|
So. Twice now I've managed to take no damage until his second form, it's really just brutal pattern memorization in the end. What's been getting me on the last few runs is the out-of-context menu bones, had to heal way too many times from those before he got to his special attack. Still, I'm making it that far on like 50% of my runs now.
