Aston rose from his seat again to get another glass of soda and milk for the two, and tea for himself. He also came back with small sandwiches, cut neatly into triangles. The kind they serve at fancy dinner parties. Setting the tray down, he slumped into the chair again, rubbing his eyes. Truth was, the Hunter was probably exhausted. Whether or not that was the case, he seemed at least determined to offer decent hospitality.
"Now then. I know several incantations that can keep a demon trapped, but that's not exactly what we're looking for. We need a way to alleviate your symptoms long enough for you to regain control of yourself. Say... a night. Maybe two." he mused, rubbing his chin, and contemplating Evan. "Not a problem, per se - but I'm guessing there are complications, since you haven't done that already." Evan sipped his chocolate milk without looking at the Hunter. Still not really in the mood to speak. Internal-Evan was also silent at this point, not really knowing what was going on, and not particularly well-versed in the way of spells, traps, and incantations. He was staying out of this. "And as for you, K... I assume your offer to remove my curse does not come without consequence or payment? Let's discuss that." |
He would have been lying if he'd said he wasn't at least a bit interested in the situation between the demon and its vessel. It was a... unique situation. Rather, a unique set of situations, all rolled together in one pair.
He looked up from his phone, and drink, and stolen sandwiches when Aston addressed him. "You've already paid me," he replied, lifting his cup a fraction. "All I require is cooperation." |
"Cooperation I can definitely give you. I'm a doctor, not a swindler." He smirked, and offered his hand. "What do you need me to do, and what should I gather? I'd rather like to be rid of this curse. It does more than just change my appearance."
Evan's ears - had he been in four-legged form - would have perked. A curse? Now this was interesting. He hadn't noticed it when he met the guy. Maybe this angel was better than him at... things. Actually, the likelihood was that the angel was definitely better than him at things... considering he sort of sucked at the whole.. having powers, and being an actual demon thing. He was more demon-lite. A real curse was something he hadn't seen. Ever. |
The angel hummed in acknowledgement more than anything else. He switched the screen of his phone off and tucked it back into his pocket, only to withdraw a black marker instead. "I've got all I need here," he replied as he set his drink down. "You've just gotta give me a good piece of skin to work on."
|
"Skin, I can also do." He reached up to take off his button-up shirt, turning around to reveal a large expanse of skin on his back. The guy was thin, but he wasn't frail. "While we are doing this, Evan, I'd like you to think of things that you might be willing to do to help with your symptoms. Obviously, the best way for you to handle these... cravings, is going to be to get you out of that body for a day or two each month. We have to brainstorm to find out how that's possible."
Evan snorted, and sipped more milk. "It isn't. If I leave him, he dies. If we're separated, he dies. If I even so much as move five feet away from him, he dies. There's literally nothing I can do that doesn't involve human-Evan dying too. That's something... I want to avoid." Nodding a bit, Aston chuckled. "I rather figured as much. There is always a solution, though. It may be odd to hear, as a demon - but you shouldn't give up hope. There's always a way. Maybe it just hasn't presented itself yet." |
Clearly in no rush, the Angel took a moment to pull himself up out of the seat he'd been occupying, and another to stretch his arms up over his head. A series of cracks and pops along his spine and shoulders had him humming contentedly. "I don't suppose," he said as he dropped his arms, "that brother of mine the Winchesters are so fond of has ever been inclined to practice sustained healing? I hear he's assisted his share of demons. It would be an easy fix, if he cared enough to donate his time."
He paused then to uncap his marker, his gaze shifting back to Aston. "You might want to make sure you're comfortable, as this removal assuredly won't be. This method will give you the fewest side effects in the coming months, but can be... difficult. Honestly, it's no surprise my brother gets himself into such trouble if he cannot even identify a possession like yours. I'm sure he's learned terrible habits from those boys." |
Aston lay himself flat on his stomach on the other couch, and tried to get as comfortable as possible. "Ah, I've never met Castiel in person. Nor have I ever spoken with him. I have precious-little contact with the Winchesters. The only time they've ever rung me up is for Evan, and even that has been few and far between. Even as Hunters go, I'm an odd one. Most of them don't take kindly to my Healing and Treating the various ghosts, ghouls, demons, otherthings, and spirits that they're going after. Makes for bad business, apparently."
While he was getting comfortable, Evan sighed and set his drink down, straightening himself as best he could. "I've asked Castiel before - if he could heal human Evan so I didn't have to stick around all the time, and he said no. Although... it might have just been his idea of being angry at me at the time. Personally, I don't think he cares for me. Yanno, being a demon and all. I mean, I don't want the kid to die, and me flying off the handle every time I see a canine ain't helpin' that, that's for damn sure." |
The angel clicked his tongue as he moved over to the couch. He was careful to keep the marker out of the way as he leaned over Aston and ran his hands along his back. "My dear brother sounds like an ass," he remarked. He seemed to have no issues getting hands on with the hunter he'd only just met, as he took it upon himself to nudge and press here and there to get him aligned just so. "But we can only expect so much from soldiers. The same goes for those boys."
Once satisfied with Aston's position, K set a hand against the back of his shoulder and took to drawing quick, dark lines over his back. Carefully spaced circles, a web of lines, and letters and runes written just large enough that they were still clear as the edges bled into his skin. "The Winchesters are hardly known for their acceptance of others. What they'll tolerate and what they won't, where they choose to draw the line baffles me." |
"You're not the only one." Evan grumbled. "I mean, I'm grateful for them saving us and all, but... I was dead-to-rights. There's no reason they shouldn't have just shot us and put us out of our misery. Instead, Sam gets the notion into his head that he can save our lives, carts us back to the hotel, and proceeds to try and play doctor on Dean's bed. Dean wasn't happy about the prospect, but..." He shrugged. "Obviously could be swayed, or else I wouldn't be here."
Aston chuckled. "Well, Sam's always had an influence on Dean. Every Hunter knows that. When it comes to getting in-between the brothers... you just don't. Not if you want to keep your life and limb." He closed his eyes, starting to relax. Pain, it seemed, was not an issue with this one. As a matter of fact, pain didn't seem to register at all. Probably a good thing, even if a bit odd. "You know, K... I think you may be right about Castiel. I haven't ever personally met him, but enough stories have been passed around. If you put it all into context, he sounds like a petulant child." |
"Most of my brothers and sisters are." He moved his hand from Aston's shoulder and placed it at the center of the drawing. Each line that his own skin covered, he drew all over again on the back of his hand. "They speak as if they know of the world, of humanity and souls as if they've ever experienced such things for themselves. They glimpse at a single moment, at a single place and time, and they think they understand the whole of our Lord God's creation."
Unseen wings shifted restlessly against his back. They felt his aggrivation, he was sure, but it couldn't be helped. Not when his fellow angels were so, "Disgustingly blind, the lot of them. Thinking they can understand something they'll never posess." With one hand, he capped off his marker and shoved it back into his pocket. When he focused on the decorated back again, he let out a breath and pressed his energy, his grace, into his skin. From that single spot where skin met skin, he guided the magic out, followed it along each drawn line, each curve, and urged it throughout the man's body from there. The curse was strong, but not particularly complicated. Not for the effects it caused. Like plucking each note from a song, the angel unwound it. Milliseconds like minutes, seconds like hours, he felt Aston's heart as it beat. Once. Twice. By the third, the angel was already pulling away, finished with his work. |
Aston sighed, and relaxed on the couch as the magic left - leaving in its wake a twenty-eight year old boy with black hair, white streaks. The leftovers from the possession. But he was no longer stooped, no longer 'frail' - very young, fresh, and immensely relieved. "Oh HEAVEN that feels so much better." He stretched out, sitting up, and scrubbing his hand through his hair. "Thank you, K. Help yourself to anything in the fridge. I get a food-delivery service, and they'll be by later today. Perks of the entire town being indebted to me." He chuckled, and leaned against the couch. "Now... on to the problem of Evan."
The demon looked at K, then looked at the new Aston, then back at K. "How did you do that? I didn't even realize there was a curse on him at all. You're like... super-good at this." |
K arched a brow and looked over at the demon, absently running his fingers over his hand to scrub away the dark lines. "I'm also much older than you. Amazingly enough, you can learn a lot of things when you bother trying. It's especially handy to learn how to feel out curses and traps before you end up walking right into them."
|
Evan looked a bit put-upon, and glanced to the side. He was clearly embarrassed, and attempting to make light of it, regardless of who was watching. Licking his lips self-consciously, although not arguing, he went back to his chocolate milk. Whether or not he was unable or unwilling to make a retort was beside the question. There was no anger, though - maybe light chagrin.
"Being older and more experienced is something you get to look forward to." Aston said, stretching out shoulders that had been held to an unnatural position for way too long. "You'll get used to it. Now then... if Castiel won't heal the human Evan for long enough for you to get out and run around for a day or two each month, I think I've got an idea." Rising, he moved to a chest, ancient by the looks of it, opening it and digging around. He came out of it with a doll - black, covered in twine, with a cross necklace draped over it's entire frame, wrapped around the neck. "You might recognize it, K. This is a doppelganger I made from the shreds of a holy man's robes after he died. It can serve to take the place of a soul... It might not be a PERFECT solution, but it would at least keep the other Evan in the world of the living... Even if not conscious, and not able to be mobile." |
"Staying away from dogs is always an option, too," K added as he returned to his chair and his drink. "If you've got some paper around here, I can write down that ritual for you, Aston. It's useful for several kinds of binding spells, as long as you only attempt it on creatures that have a soul. No—" He pointed up at the ceiling and gave his finger a little twirl. "—heavenly hands necessary. They just make it easier."
|
"I'd appreciate that." Aston said with a nod, retrieving a pad of paper and a pen from a nearby desk. "Go ahead and do that, and I'll let you peruse this doll. I got it from an angel... whose name I don't quite recall. I remember he had a penchant for pranks - which was why I ended up as a guinea-pig for a number of days. Literal guinea-pig. Squeaks and everything. Thankfully, Bruiser is a smart and resourceful dog." He chuckled, and crouched in front of Evan. "So... how do you feel right now?" he asked, taking one of his hands in his. "I'd like to examine you - just in case. I don't think there's any other cause, but you can never be too careful."
Evan sighed, and let his hand be held. He wasn't in the mood to argue. "I don't feel great. But I don't feel bad. So whatever. I guess you can examine me. You're like... a real doctor, right?" Aston nodded. "Yes. And I'd like K..." he turned to the angel. "To help. To be my assistant for a while. Since my other one ran off." |
The angel didn't so much as look up from his paper and pen when the suggestion was made, too busy scribbling away. "I need to catch up to those boys and make sure they're not ruining my hunt. Just because they like to think they can only deal in lives, that doesn't mean the rest of us are so limited. But there's hardly any point in it if they kill my witch before then. If you can wait for me to settle that business, I'll be more inclined to help."
|
Aston nodded. "I can wait. I'll set Evan up here with some monitoring equipment, and I don't need you for that... However. I think we should let the demon-part go with you. I'd like to try this doll out, or the ritual, and get Evan some well-deserved rest." Casting his glance toward K, he motioned out into the world. "I don't know where they've gone - but if they talk to people, they're probably going to be led to the old school. The headmaster there is kind of... odd. And folks have noticed."
|
His pen stilled at the suggestion, mismatched eyes narrowing at his own writing. Needless to say, his plans hadn't involved keeping tabs on the demon, regardless of the body it inhabited. Still, it was only a second or two before his expression evened once more, and once he'd finished with the last of the instructions, he set them and the pen aside for Aston to gather when he wanted to. "As long as it doesn't start trouble."
|
"I honestly don't think he will." Aston said, rubbing Evan's back. "He's young, inexperienced. Doesn't know much about the world. It would do him some good to get out and about. Since he's the kind of demon that doesn't kill it's victim, I think I'll let him borrow Bruiser's body. Let's see if this ritual of yours works in the interim. What do we need?"
Evan, for his part, wasn't saying much of anything. Just sort of looking down at his hands, and not particularly feeling very well. He licked his lips again. "I want to know how it works, too. Yanno... 'cause it's my essence." |
Letting out a soft sigh, K pressed a single finger to the pad of paper and slid it to the edge of the table beside his seat. "It takes a while to perform when you're unused to the process. More or less, this circle draws on the energy supplied to it... In my case, my grace, but for you, it'll be the basic ritual setup. The proper candle, an incantation, and plenty of strong intent. It allows the caster to see the energies inside a body like a weave and adjust them as they need to. It has a lot of different uses, but only if you can supply the time to perform it. Breaking contact while trying to manipulate things... generally ends poorly. But the warding here is sufficient enough that I doubt you'd have that sort of trouble."
|
Aston laughed. "Yes, well. Since I installed the stronger wards, interruptions are mercifully few. Now, let's see..."
The young man spent the better part of two-ish hours setting up the circle with several black and white candles, some incense to help the process along, and the all the accouterments needed. The young Hunter was actually very good at incantations, and got very few words even remotely wrong. One might guess he'd done this before. Which... he had. Quite a few times. He finished up with loading the unconscious body into a bed, and hooking up monitors, while he brought Bruiser out of the room, and let him stand near the circle. Immediately, Evan's essence zipped into Bruiser, and the dog went still for a moment, before the black fuzzy tail started wagging hard, and the tongue started lolling. Pure-black eyes gazed up from a canine face wearing a very goofy expression. However... when the dog went to approach K, he fell head over paws, forgetting which of his feet to move, and sort of ending up sprawled on the ground. Aston, despite his best attempt not to, burst out laughing. |
Leaned against the wall as he was, there wasn't anywhere he could go when the big demon-dog came padding towards him. Or, tried to go towards him. His momentary concerns quickly turned out to be entirely unfounded as the beast just ended up on the floor. K pointedly ignored the laughter elsewhere in his mind. His own snickering was a little harder to pretend never happened. "Great," he said, no real hints of irritation in his voice, "the doofy little asshole forgot how to walk."
|
Evan gave a very unimpressed look up at K. ~I didn't forget! I just... erm... need some practice.~ he thought toward the angel, getting up on all fours again, albeit in a wobbly fashion. Just when he thought he was actually in somewhat of a balanced state... he decided to move forward, and his entire body decided to follow in that direction, leading to a sort of four-legged grapevine to the left, until he crashed into the wall.
At this point, Aston had to lay down on the couch, on his back, arm over his eyes and laughing his ass off. It was hard not to follow suit. This was actually pretty damn hilarious. Like a drunk dog. |
Between the demon's antics, the hunter completely losing his shit, and the voice at the back of his head practically doing the same, the angel's already poor poker face was quickly losing ground. That fact alone was enough to bother him. "Aston, please, you're making me very uncomfortable right now!"
|
Eventually, Aston wound down, and stood up, moving over to Evan, and setting him on all fours again. He was still sort of chuckling. "Here." he instructed. "One paw in front of the other. Think of it like you have two sets of legs. Co-ordinate them. Make them match. The left front, and the right back go first, then the other two. Try it."
He backed up, and let Evan go. Eventually, the dog did get the hang of walking, even if it was a sort of funny gait, and he did tend to go sideways at inopportune times. He couldn't run or be a floppy, flouncy dog right now - but at least he could walk in a semi-straight like. ~This is like the worst sobriety test ever devised.~ he complained to K. ~I mean, seriously. I'd like to see Aston try walking like this. It's like my legs have a mind of their own.~ |
"That tends to happen, when you have so many limbs. Especially when you're not used to handling them." Not that he, the composed and very unamused angel, would know anything about what that was like. "Do you need another minute? Maybe a walk around the block?"
|
Evan sat down flat, with a very splay-legged look, and canted his head to one side, eyeing K. ~Now, you're just teasing me.~ he said with a huff, and went to stand again, slipping on the slick surface, and almost falling over again before he managed to regain his balance. Shaky-legged, he started toward the angel. Once again, not at a run - but at least he was walking, and not falling all over himself in the attempt. ~I'm ready to go when you are-ACK!~ That last 'ack' was Bruiser's left hind leg sliding out from under him as he didn't have a good enough grip on the linoleum, and down he went on his side, flopping there in defeat. ~ARRRRGH! How do I LEGS?!~ he almost screamed, even though to Aston it was just barking.
|
Sighing heavily, K pushed himself away from his chosen wall to meet the demon on the floor. He squatted down and tilted his head as he took the dog's head between his hands. "You're overthinking it. Just calm down for a minute. Feel things out for yourself and stop rushing. That body already knows what to do, if you'll let it."
|
Although the demon was loathe to admit it, the angel was right. He had to calm down, take deep breaths, close his eyes, and stop overthinking shit. For a moment, he did close his eyes, put his full weight on K - just his head - and let himself be a dog. It did come naturally to him, he just hadn't been relaxed or open enough. When he did finally calm down, he was able to get onto all fours with nary a wobble. The body did know what to do - and now, so did he. He also had to admit that it felt really, really good to be able to spread out like this. So good, in fact, that his tail started wagging. When he decided on a final vessel for this form, he had to include a wagging tail. That was a must.
~Alright. I'm ready to go when you are.~ he said, tongue lolling again. ~I think I've got the hang of this now that I've calmed down some.~ |
"Good." K stood back up and wiped his hands off on the sides of his pants. "I can't feel where those boys are, I assume because of something my darling brother has done to them. So you can either come looking with me and hope we get lucky on the first try, or I can find them, and then come get you."
|
~I'll come with you. I can use my nose.~ Evan said, already starting to sniff around near the chair where Dean had been sitting. ~I can smell them in here, I should be able to follow it outside.~
Aston leaned against the wall, and watched the two. "You guys be careful, alright? I still want to give Evan an examination once you guys get back. Even so... just please take it easy. No massive fights, no running for miles and miles. I'm worried about a couple of different things that might be part of your 'essence' Evan. I know I can't understand you, but I'm pretty dang sure you can understand me. Bark if you do." Evan barked, and wagged his tail. ~I understand, now can we get going? I have a fresh scent, and I don't want to lose it.~ |
"I wasn't planning on any running," K replied, frowning down at the demon-dog. "And I'm afraid you might have the wrong idea about how we're doing this. I hardly intend to wait on you and your nose the entire way. We're going to the school first, and if you can get your nose in a reasonable order when we get there, then you can go sniffing around. For now..." He narrowed his eyes down at Evan, then opened his arms, clearly wanting the oversized pup to jump up. "Come on. Let's make this quick."
|
Every dog in history knew what that gesture meant, and he did so with great haste, launching himself into the angel's arms, and settling there - albeit a bit on the bewildered side. Both his ears were flat, as he was afraid K was going to drop him. He was, after all, about 89 pounds of animal right now... Not exactly a lightweight. ~I'm too heavy for this.~ he thought to the angel, tail tucked firmly between his legs. ~You're gonna drop me.~
Of course, Aston couldn't hear the dog, and merely watched as he jumped into K's arms. "If you want to get to the school - and I assume you're planning on flying - you want to get out of this neighborhood, take Old Tree - which is the road this feeds into - and find Cardinal Way. Take that for about five minutes, and you'll get to Birgit Road. Follow Birgit Road for half-a-mile, then turn right onto Silent Creek. The school's recognizable, because it's the only building down that way that has a huge parking lot. It's maybe a mile-and-a-quarter down Silent Creek. You can't miss it. Of course, since you're flying... you could just look for the only building for miles with a blue roof painted with a puma. That's always an option, too." |
For his part, K caught the demon dog with only a quiet grunt and a single step backwards. The weight wasn't nearly as much of an issue as managing all of the extra limbs, but if there was one thing the angel was used to, it was definitely managing way too many limbs. "You're fine," he said in answer to the demon's thoughts. "I throw around guys twice my size for fun."
His attention shifted to Aston as the man took it upon himself to give directions to the old place. He waited and listened, and when the hunter had finished, he nodded politely. "Thank you. We'll be back soon enough." |
Evan's stomach dropped when they took off, and he immediately closed his eyes. Not to put TOO fine a point on it, but he was afraid of heights. In dog form or other. He trembled non-stop, although he was trying to be in the best position not to be dropped, and kept his legs where K had put them. ~Don't like flying. Don't like flying. Don't like flying. Don't like flying...~ he whimpered, with his eyes still squeezed shut.
~After we get to this school, what exactly do you want to do? They might not even be there yet, or maybe they decided not to go there at all. It's not like they have any REASON to.~ |
Honestly, it was astounding that the demon could repeat the same phrase so many times in such quick succession. It had just finished its question when the angel landed outside of the building.
He kept hold on the canine vessel as he looked around for any sign of the brothers, a soft rustle of feathers settling just behind his back. "If they're not here, I'll find them and come back for you. It'll be quicker that way, anyway. I don't like flying slow for passengers like you." |
The dog visibly bristled for a moment, then decided to let it go. Petty grievances didn't particularly bother him for the moment. They'd bother him plenty later - but right now, the most important thing was to find the brothers. Before they killed someone. While he was clearly uncomfortable with the notion, he sat and gave K a very long glare.
~Alright, but if you leave me here...~ He trailed off, leaving the sentence unfinished. Actual truth? He didn't know what he'd do to the angel if K left him here. Probably nothing. Best to make it seem like a threat, though. ~I can try and get a scent or something while you're zooming around looking for things.~ he mentioned, lifting a paw to scratch a his nose. |
