That would be SOOO SWEET!
I mean really if we could play games with anyone those gaming sessions would be awesome. I can't wait till technology lets us do that. ^.^ |
I know. I hope it will at least be somewhat affordable, or if will just become standard for everyone to have 'cyber-brains' by the time that kinda tech exists.
|
The first few things like that are gonna be outta this world expensive
but once tech gets that far i could see it becoming the standard. |
Yeah, and can you just imagine how immersive that can get? It would take LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) to a whole new level, especially with the cinematic maneuvers that you'd be able to pull off, or the environments your characters would be in.
Well, I suppose that would take away the whole aspect of table-top gaming, though. xD |
It would take away from the "table top" aspect
I prefer table top because then its friends having a great time with friends without the electronic influence that there is with MMOs and Online play with the other systems. Its face time. Where we all use our brains and have a blast. I'm not sure if it would be the same if it was computerized and placed inside our heads. It would be interesting tho. |
Hmm, yeah. The face time is always so much better, but the only danger is flying dice. xD Or spraying silly string at the GM.
|
-giggles-
Flying Dice happens alot Silly string I never thought of... maybe next time xD |
Dice from a casino are the worst. Sharp corners.
Our group heard some random story that silly string was the only way to kill a GM. Just makes sure you have a lot of windows open. The fumes ain't good for you. xD |
I used to play Dungeons and Dragons 3.0/3.5, but I am now playing Pathfinder RPG, since I'm not a fan of D&D 4th ed.
|
I don't know anyone that really likes D&D 4th
I play anywhere from 1-3.5 Cause my father started out with version 1 and still has all his stuff. And I've made him catch up to 3.5 ^.^; I've heard good things about Pathfinder if I remember correctly. =3 |
Pathfinder is very similar to 3.5. Paizo, the company that distributes Pathfinder, used to make Pathfinder setting things for 3.5, and when it went on to 4.0, they no longer do that, so they created a RPG independent of D&D.
|
That sounds pretty cool~
|
I think I still have D&D 3.5 stuff for Pathfinder.
It's funny, because I play Pathfinder in an organized game play (kinda similar to Living Grey Hawk), and some of the older scenarios haven't been converted to Pathfinder yet, so they use the D&D 3.5 Monster Manual rather than the Pathfinder Bestiary. |
I've never played. I'm always curious, but, eh, I have no super strong desire. They still confuse me a bit. Seems like there are so many rules.
|
did someone say pathfinder :D I am totally addicted since I had a friend GM a couple games for our group! I was a DnD baby, then, yeah, fourth came out and it was just horrendous. I still play a 2.0 game with a group, I miss a lot of those races :(
|
I'm a game nut in just about every way. Card games, role play, consol games, PC games, board games, etc. But my favourite really is playing DnD. It's sort of a family thing here. Back in the 70s my dad encountered this thing called DnD and thought it would be a good thing for his nerdy stepson to d, so dad DMd for my brother. After my sister and I came along my brother introduced it to us with ADnD and later 3.0. A number of cousins and such also play. It was always great fun and we usually play marathon sessions that last at least two days.
We don't get together often anymore though, because of jobs and school and the like. Since I'm the least busy I've largely taken over DMing for our group. I've also started gaming online though message boards. I currently run one game and play in another, both Eberron world. Since it's painfully slow at times, we tend to focus more on character interaction and story than kick-in-the-door dungeon crawling. Online dice rollers handle the number crunching. And yes, I'm not a fan of 4e, though I do have the books. Right now I'm poised to be one of the last 3.5 dms on the forums I play on since most new games are 4e. I like the character creation better in 3.5, with all the skills and little tweeks that can be made. Characters aren't quite so defined by their class as they seem to be in 4e. Outside of DnD I used to play Magic: the Gathering quite a bit but I recently got out of the game though I still have my decks and a small collection of cards I kept. I've played Munchkin, though never Killer Bunnies even though I know we have it somewhere. One of my favourite games is Citadels, a card based game where players take on identities that are kept secret and try to be the first to build a city, without the other characters getting in your way. A lot of the game involves selecting one's character and guessing who the other characters are. |
I played DnD 3.5 in high school for 3 years, though as time went one, we started modifying the system so much it barely resembled 3.5 anymore. We adopted the third-party Immortals Handbook for insanely high-epic gameplay with gods and cosmic entities as PCs. I eventually basically rewrote the entire players' handbook for my campaign setting, with all new classes, a new spell system with new spells, a hundred new feats, and a design approach incorporating 3.5's entire catalogue, especially the Book of Nine Swords rules.
And... my group broke up before I could ever run a game with it. :| Oh, and I play in Quiet's forum game. It's really slow, but it's also a lot more in-depth doing it play-by-post, almost like collaborative writing. I have some amusing and/or ridiculous anecdotes from our games I can relate, but I'll save them for another post. Most of them involve TPKs and battles that took far too long to adjudicate. One short tale I can share though regards the beginning of a campaign I was running. I took the bard player aside as asked him to do something to get the party imprisoned, so, whilst at the tavern, he went up to a lizard man at the bar (of the very honorable nearby swamp kingdom of the lizard men, stalwart allies and trading partners of the city they were in) and... hissed in his face, for a good ten seconds. Suffice it say, the insult was not taken well. |
Okay...I read that as "kissed" the first time.
Nothing majorly spectacular in my DnD adventures so far, just the occasional odd moment, usually when my sister is DMing. She takes everything said as fair game so if someone says in jest, "I push the sorcerer down the slop towards the cave" it happens. The the sorcerer grabs onto the character that did the shoving and that character falls too, rolling on top of the sorcerer and doing d6 damage because the second character is a 500 pound nimblerite. And both characters end up in a heap in front of the cave that was really the lair of a hydra that is now woken and annoyed at standing at the entrance. Weee. |
You actually just reminded me (I might have told you this story before, can't remember) that once, I was running a gauntlet for a friend who'd put together a party he considered very optimized (and they were, in a way), I think they were around level 15. And he was pretty much steam-rolling the encounters I threw at him, but eventually, being as overconfident as he was at that point, he walked into a room with a 15-headed cryo-hydra who won initiative on him and nuked his whole party for 45d6 cold damage, killing everyone but his half-giant fighter. He was impressed.
|
I'm a fairly friendly DM in that I don't like to kill people though my brother has commented that PC can be fairly hard to kill, especially considering the CR system. He lets us get away with pretty innovative or non-standard things though, which helps. He's always up for novel ideas.

I played D&D 4 a few times, mostly with a couple of my friends - none of us had a firm grasp on how to play, so it was fun just stumbling through it and then giving up and spending all of our time rolling different characters. I can't ever find anyone who's willing to sit down and teach me because apparently 4 is evil, and all I get is "No. Noooo!"
I've also played the Serenity tabletop game with one of my exes, and though that was a time in my life that I really really wish would fly out the window and never return, it was a lot of fun. It's a neat new system for major Firefly nerds like me. I also have a nagging desire to buy a copy of the Vampire game - either Requiem or Masquerade. Just for shits and giggles. |
I've seen the Serenity game and I love firefly but I wasn't sure if it would be any good honestly. Maybe I'll look into getting it. I need to find a group to play games with though.... My friends and I have different hours now.
I want to find a nice supernatural tabletop game. With Weres' /Fae /Vamps /Etc. I just haven't found one yet |
Masquerade is the edition before Requiem, I belive. I have a couple of the White Wolf Word of Darkness settings; Vampire: the Masquerade, and Werewolf: the apocalypse. Never played in any though. I was invited to join a Mage: the awakening game but it was too far off campus for me to be comfortable taking public transit. I learned the system though. I was going to try and write some teeny manuals so my other gamer friends could learn quickly but never did get around to it beyond a rough draft.
|
I'm a fan of the "races" of vampires in Masquerade; seems a lot more simple, but I only ever see Requiem on the shelves. All of the White Wolf games look interesting, and I thought I saw something about a faerie game that was either just out or in the making. It would be cool to have a game that includes all of the races that White Wolf has done so far.
Serenity seems really simple compared to other RPGs, but I love the character attributes/flaws and the fact that you can buy a ship or build one from scratch. =3 If ever I stop being a hermit and step out into the sun, I'd like to find a group of Firefly fans to play with. |
I know they cross over each other. For instance, Vampires and Werewolves are enemies and something is said about it in each manual. The editions are all compatable with each other and I've seen different settings around, like Werewolf: Dark ages or Western.
Off the top of my head there is Werewolf, Mage, Vampire, Changeling, and a few more that I can't think of right now. They use a D10 success failure system. Role a number of d10s, beat a specific number, like 6 or so, a certain number of times to succeed at whatever you are doing. Saw serentiy, never played. |
Changeling must have been what I was thinking about with the faerie thing. I didn't like D&D's version of the changeling race, so I might have to check that one out. It would be interesting to get all of the books together and have a huge campaign that crosses over into all of them.
*plans excursion to Hobby Town to gather recruits* >D |
I've done White Wolf a few times, and there's a bunch of races I can never recall the names of...which is ironic since I usually played them just to torque off the GM...he was a jerk. But yeah there's also cat-shifters and reptilian-shifters in there...and of course NO ONE gets along.

Just remembered another DnD story.
We were playing a short campaign at level 100 (I believe I mentioned the Immortals rules we used above) and the party was fighting a particularly nasty god who managed to wipe out two of the three PCs, leaving only the fighter-type alive... whom he promptly cast Imprisonment on, sealing him in the center of the planet. And we all assumed that was the end of that. But said fighter's player, after being quiet for a minute, checks over his character sheet, opens up the rulebook, then jumps out of his chair and exclaims "I sunder the planet!". Looking it up, an Earth-sized planet has roughly 100,000 hp apparently, and with his orichalcum warhammer and all the crazy divine abilities he had, he was... actually able to do it. So, he split open the planet they were on and came charging back into the god's temple and promptly caved his skull in and finished the adventure. High-epic play is weird. |
XD OH MY GOD!
That's the most epic nerdy story I've ever heard. Now I have to sit and wait for the perfect time to use the phrase "I sunder the planet!" |
Wow. That would have been interesting.
I was solo playing with my sister as DM. I was playing a four character party and wandered into a rather ill fated battle. One of the bad guys managed to cast "Tasha's Hideous Laughter" on my stoic pyromanical cleric (fine! Fire worshipping cleric). I failed the save miserably. My main fighter guy was also disarmed via whip, his weapon nabbed by said whip wielder, and promptly smacked with his own sword. Seeing as the DM only rolled an attack and disarm check for that I insisted on the nad guy making a dex check or something to catch and use the sword. It works. Ow. On the plus side, once my cleric stopped laughing he set the mage on fire with his enchanted spiked chain. :) |
The whole adventure was fairly interesting, now that I think on it, actually.
At one point, they fought a Void Dragon who could circle the planet 4 times with one move action (His move speed per round was something like 50,000 miles) and had the Strafing Breath feat, so he would nuke the party four times and then fly to the other side of the planet and wait out their turns. Later on, they fought a paragon Storm Giant with 80 levels of Godslayer who would have made mincemeat of the gods in the party, so the fighter character above (the only one without any Divine Rank) ran to grapple him, threw him into the earth creating a massive pit, then dove in after him and pounded him to pulp. Godslayers aren't too tough against mortals of the same level. :p Then, in a complete anticlimax, I had 5 really powerful (or so I thought) demons come shrieking out of the sky at them, only for the wizard-god to calmly raise his hand, cast a 4-times-split-rayed, 10-times-empowered, maximized, unbound Disintegrate and reduce them all to ash. |
Gee. That's definately a bit beyond what my groups are usually capable off. Generally, we seem to be investigating how many things can be inadvertantly set on fire and the uses of a walking corpse. Those are surprisingly many, among them stepladder, mode of transportation, ventriloquism, and trap fodder.
|
One of our favorite spells was Unliving Weapon from the Book of Vile Darkness. Makes an animated undead explode when killed. Endless possibilities.
As for traps, one of my worst (best) was a teleportation circle into the bottom of an underground lake of acid covered in permanent antimagic fields, with a clan of Black Slaad living on the shore to pick off any survivors. This was in another epic dungeon we ran, have to be tough on players at that level. |
Ouch. The most annoying trap I ever devised was the hallway with needle traps in the walls and poison gas triggers on the floor, both of which were spent long ago. Of course, the PC's didn't know that. Took them half an hour to get across the hallway and in to the actual crypt.
|
I was always fond of the "room of death" from 1st ed. that made it onto the stupidest monsters ever list.
"Hello adventurer. You walk into the room. That's when the floor starts to fight with the ceiling about who gets to eat you. While they fight you sneak along the wall, hoping to escape...only to find out the wall's already starting to digest you the moment you touch it. Adventurer, I hope you've enjoyed your stay in the Room of Death. Remember to fill out your comment card." |
Heh. Reminds me of the guest book in Castle Ravenloft, for purposes of notifying next of kin. ;)
|
The list, in case anyone interested in other hilariously stupid monsters. There's a second part linked somewhere in there, as well. My favorite is the Duckbunny, it's just fun to say. Duckbunny!
|
I haven't really ever played yet, just one game with a group that died not long after I joined.
What happened was interesting... to put it lightly. I ended up with a wizard who was terrorfied of cauldrons. |
I think this is the last story I have that's really worth sharing, but it's probably the most memorable one to me.
This is a pretty long story, so I'm spoiling it. Oh, and this is the last time he was allowed to run a game, by the way. I honestly think he was just making up half of his numbers, unless that giant had d100s for hit dice... |
