Some of mine do, and even with them I read it all.

If there is "Sexy time" in a book, I just read through it, because its part of the book. It doesn't get any special attention xD

I read the sexy parts at LEAST five or six times. <.<; Especially if you know.. its taken four or five books to lead UP to the sexy time. I'm all "ITS ABOUT. FREAKING. TIME. GOD." -reads six times- I just enjoy reading about it, you know? I'm a physical person, and I get SO very attached to the characters I'm reading about. So if they score, mentally, I score. XD;

Does that sound weird to anyone else?

totally agreed. That is like the main reason i love paranormal romances because they have vampires and werewolves and all the good stuff doing while still having a plot :) they are amazing!

Merr 05-18-2012 12:11 AM

Hrmm.. In most 'good' books that I read, there's at least a sex scene a book.
Sex makes it seem a hell of a lot more realistic - especially when well-executed and purposeful (IE someone enjoying it or not, doing it to procreate or to demonstrate a pivotal moment).

Sometimes I read them twice, if I realized I just shot through that scene like an arrow.. >//> (I do this for battle scenes a lot as well! XD; ) But usually I only read a passage once.

Right now I'm reading a Song of Ice and Fire, and Gosh.. Dany's sex scenes were the best. >_>

Tyrion sex scenes make me feel like I know tyrion much better.. I commend George R R Martin for using sex in such a good way :)

Umaeril 05-20-2012 06:21 PM

I will scan read sex parts because I find the actual description of sex itself to be generally boring. Most of these scenes are filler. I am thinking of books like Anita Blake Vampire Hunter and stuff of that paranormal genre where there are vampires or whatever having sex with each other. The ookie Stackhouse kind of stuff though I actually never read those books.

Where it is not simply uninteresting filler I will read it. Something that moves the story forward.

I know this is different from most but I am older than most of you and frankly been there done that.

Ducky 05-21-2012 11:41 AM

I will read the sex sections, but I can't say I find them very interesting. They're just boring and stop the story from progressing. I don't read for sexy times, i read for story.

Karliah 06-26-2012 10:23 PM

' sort of a perv, so if a book has sex I'm like, "Oh sex, I'm going to read this part slowly."
It's not that big of a deal to me if a book has sex or not though, books for older readers, not counting erotica which is sexy for the sake of being sexy, will have sex scenes sometimes.

Kit Katy 07-31-2012 06:05 PM

I do happen to come upon them, especially the in the In Death Series by J.D Robb. It's clear J.D enjoyed writing the sexy bits but I cannot seem to read them. I do want to! I'm all for the sexy man and woman. But, I cannot 'read' it. I get all bashful, pull the books away, and eventually skim through it. Kinda silly now that I think about it...Why be embarrassed over something fictional and written on paper?...

Family. FAMILY! I am freaken easy to read. A few close friends know from the start if I read something kinky. I turn into a bright tomato.

Gaius 08-09-2012 06:48 PM

I always read them, just like every part of a book. There have been a couple I have read intensely, 'cause you know, sometimes it's an integral part of the story. Most times though, it's just sex. We always like to make a big deal out of sex, and I'm not really sure why.

Lestrade 10-09-2012 10:48 PM

If a book is well-written the sex scenes are just as important as anything else in the story.

Kaunisenkeli 12-03-2012 12:27 AM

I always read straight through because any sexy parts are a part of the overall story. Sex is a natural part of life, and I never understood why so many people get offended by it try to shelter themselves from any mention of it.

And yet people exploit the living crap out of violence.....makes sense right?

Belial 12-03-2012 11:37 AM

I'm kind of odd with sex scenes.
I prefer the hand holding, the conversations, and the closeness. I'm not a romance novel type I guess.

People read those more for the sex scenes than the actual romance, just me being picky maybe.

Shadami 12-03-2012 11:13 PM

I keep reading straight through. And if its a badly written scene I'm all meh.. if its a great scene I'm all "HUBBY COME HERE!!!" :D

Yeah, humans are definitely a bizarre species, one I doubt I'll ever understand.

Speaking about the disparity in how we treat violence in media to how we treat sex, George Carlin made an interesting suggestion in his 1977 HBO special. He wanted to go back through old movies and exchange the word "kill" with the word "fuck". That would certainly make for some interesting viewing. xD

setsunaela 12-06-2012 08:31 PM

I just read right through usually. Sometimes I'll just skim for dialogue or important parts to the plot, but generally I just.. read it. It doesn't do anything for me sexually, but I don't really care whether it's there or not..

silverygit 01-03-2013 11:50 PM

hahaha, I just read them and it is not a big deal, although sometimes I feel they are truly unnecessary...

Either they don't add anything to the story or are just there to lose the focus of the story, but that may be just me :P

Hex 01-05-2013 02:19 AM

I feel like the awkward immature ferret but I'm going bust up your monocle wearing party...I LOVE THE SEX SCENES! I will read them and if they are good I will read them twelve times.

I can't decide if it is because I get really attached to the characters and I love to see them get it or if it is because I am just a really sexual person and I enjoy sensual literature. Either way when I come across a sex scene in my book as long as it is well written...SCORE.

Lestrade 01-07-2013 04:31 AM

No, it's definitely great when characters you'd really been rooting for FINALLY have sex. How graphic the sex should be is something that's going to vary depending on the particular story, but it can be really satisfying as a reader.

I do this exact same thing xD

Red Lion 03-01-2013 08:12 PM

How I feel about explicit content usually depends on it's relevance to the story. If showing the characters in a sexual setting contributes to the story and helps us gain new insights to a facet of their relationship then I'll read it and appreciate the perspective.

If it's smut that's only there to be smut then I might not even read the book. If your story is so weak you have to try to entice me by presenting me with porn in hopes that it will keep me turned on enough to continue reading then your story probably sucks, or it's a harlequin romance novel, which means it sucks. I have more respect for straight up porn since that doesn't generally pretend it's selling me an actual story.

To summarize, whether or not I'll read it and enjoy it really depends on it's importance to the plot and the character development.

bagelbites101 03-01-2013 09:15 PM

@Red XD But the Harlequin Romance novels ARE porn for some.

Generally, I enjoy having some smut spliced into my novels. Even if I don't read through it right then (maybe entangled in the story and have to finish it first), I will still come back and make my own little marks on the page to let me know where it was.. IF it was good. If it sucked, then no, I'll never go back to it and it might even draw me out of the book.

Unfortunately for me, I cannot seem to find an outlet other than smut novels that really.. *AHEM* get things going. I've taken to gathering and collecting the novels purely for the erotica, in an attempt to liven up the love life.. Most pictures or videos do nothing for me.

Lestrade 03-02-2013 02:55 AM

I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with straight-out porn either...

uncledaddy 03-04-2013 02:02 PM

Unless the intention of the entire story is obviously to be pornographic or otherwise not serious in terms of story/plot/character development, sex scenes and all other material MUST be done in a manner that is completely relevant to the story and characters and only what is necessary for proper development should be shown. I will stop reading a story completely (or only continue reading it as a joke) if I come across a useless segment of filth clearly intended to keep the attention of an immature and/or otherwise bored reader. A good story does not have room for irrelevant crap. Period. That's not just applicable to sex scenes, but all things included in the story, from physical descriptions of the characters to the amount of time covered between scene transitions. Relevance, relevance, relevance. It is important. If an author seems to be ignoring it, then the material is not worth my attention--nor would it hold my attention if I were to try reading it anyway. As Red pointed out, however, there are times when a sex scene may indeed be relevant and certain details used to illuminate character traits and relationships in a way that other types of interaction scenes could not. This is when such things are acceptable. Sexuality is, after all, a normal and often important aspect of life. It can say a lot about one or more characters. Overall, as with everything else, an author must tread very carefully when it comes to this sort of thing and decide how much detail is truly appropriate for each situation. Just because it needs to be said that two characters have slept together does not mean that it needs to be written out from start to finish--and yet, sometimes it does.

Daenerys Targaryen 09-16-2013 12:05 AM

Nanka! You're the second familiar person I've found on here. lol

Sex parts in books don't really bother me, unless they're strange. Like a line I read in 50 Shades of Gray... That will be the only line I ever read of that book. lol

Karastorm 12-03-2014 10:43 AM

I dont skip sexy parts. I'll read it and carry on as normal but they have to be at least decently written to hold my intrest. Its the one reason why I've never touched fifty shades of gray. I read one paragrath and went nope not for me. Way to poorly written.

Sookei 12-03-2014 09:41 PM

I read them like any other part of the book, but if I'm honest anything sexual or romantic really bores me in books.

KytchynWitche 01-10-2015 10:21 PM

I don't think "sexy parts" are a big deal, provided they're kept in proportion and in context. I mean, if a book is about a couple in a BDSM relationship, then I expect some pretty heavy sexy parts, but if it's about say a mystery-solving nun well then sexy parts would be pretty out of place.

Whether I read them or not generally depends on how well they're written, and whether they're actually important to the plot or not.

I think there are too many writers who shove sex scenes into stories that don't really need them, just to get the word count up.
