PSPs are cheap now, aren't they? The older ones should be, at least.

You know oddly enough despite all the awesomeness of the FF franchise and other good RPG games (which I can't think of titlewise but yeah you know what I mean) one of my absolute favorite RPGs I've played was a little-known game called Shadow Hearts. XD
I loooved the gameplay, I love the timed thing for shots (hard to describe but you had this wheel thing that you could hit in certain spots for strong attacks or defense or effects) there was a sanity meter for your character and he would lose sanity ... I loved the monster and character design and there were a lot of little things in the game that were really cool and immersed me a whole lot in this world - every single item (I mean EVERY single item) had a description and picture you could pull up (I mean a nice painted picture), every monster could be accessed in this monster gallery so you could just go through and look at these things and read about them, and there were little easter eggs and such throughout the game...and it was actually pretty creepy! One level was in a mental hospital and there were these really ....creepy monster women that split up the middle to make giant mouths and.. xD Sadly, it lost mega points in something i absolutely must have, and that was story...and I think I can firmly blame that (I -think-) on the translation. Oh my god, I don't know if it was the same in the Japanese version but the dialogue freaking SUCKED OMG So lame, corny, stilted and ughhhh And the story was kind of interesting! I mean it looked like it was pretty interesting, the dialogue and story translation though really made it blow :( |
Haha, Shadow Hearts...you just can't take the story seriously with dialogue so corny. And some of the character classes... XD Actually it was because of the humor that I liked that game quite a lot. The Judgment ring is nice too unless you have poor reflexes.
Also I agree with Suzerain, the PSP has a lot more quality RPG choices than the DS. The DS does have Dragon Quest which I really adore...but that's just one set of games. There's a lot more choices on the PSP. |
Cheap is relative. Unless PSP's are currently under $100 and the games under $20, it's money I don't have the luxury of spending at the moment.
Would Shadow Hearts be one of those Idea Factory games you guys were talking about? |
I don't think Shadow Hearts is IF. Can't remember who makes it. It's more similar to the newer Final Fantasies than any of IF's games.
And, too bad we live so far apart, I'd let you borrow my PSP. :p |
Shadow Hearts was made by Aruze corp. I can't pick off anything else they have made off the top of my head though. Oddly the first two games were published in America by MIDWAY of all companies. The third was by XSeed which is probably why the story was a bit better done. If you're a fan of not so serious stories I thought it was pretty good. The judgment ring can be tricky but I liked it a lot because I'm good with timing :p

Heh. I appreaciate it anyway, Sheol. :)
I'm feeble with game makers, I know that there are companies that make stuff, like Capcom, Square Enix, EA, Blizzard, Bethesda, etc., but I'm not always good at knowing who made what game. I'm *almost* more familiar with boardgame makers. I know Capcom makes Devil May Cry, becasue I have it, and Lucas Arts makes Rogue Squadron and possible Zelda, because I have them, and that's about as far as I get. Square Enix apparently makes the FF games because I hear people say that a lot, and I don't know who makes Castlevania. Oh, and Game Freak does Pokemon. Oh, and then there's these guys called Ubisoft that make little oddball DS games and the odd thing of facebook. Yeah, I'm stretching myself here. |
Haha Quiet, I only know the Shadow Hearts games because I went to go look at the boxes :P I usually have to just because my memory is very..flaky >> Of course I'll feel bad if I correct you on your publishers there, but you're right on all of them except Zelda.
Going by companies can usually net you a good game if you like others by the company, it doesn't always work but it's not bad for smaller companies. It's probably silly to say now but Grandia, which I mentioned a while back, was made my Game Arts XP |
I remember Lucas Arts popping up somewhere when I was playing Wii and havne't played that many games. It may have been Boom Blox since that's Spielberg's design. Haven't played that in a while. Definately not an RPG unless you count the fact that is has a story in behind playing virtual Jenga with a cheering section of square sheep, that hopefully don't qet squished by falling blocks.

The game you mention Rem reminds me of another game for Game Cube that my friends and I played. It's the first game I came across with a santiy meter, and didn't just show your character's sanity level. The game would actually mess with your head. I don't want to say too much because that would spoil the game but it actually wasn't that bad, though the controls weren't the easiest. My friend was drunk at one point trying to play, and it showed with his character on screen.
|
... that sounds really familiar ...
was it kind of like a horror RPG? with a ... blonde girl as the protagonist? |
That would be the one. I believe there are slightly different endings to the game depending on what sort of villian uber-montstery thing gets picked. The game has you going back in time, gradually getting closer to the time you are in now in order to stop whatever uber-evil is trying to destroy the cosmos, or something like that. The main area is a mansion and you learn things about it from the trips back in time.

Was it Eternal Darkness? I don't remember who the protaganist was but I do know it had some kind of insanity thing. I can't comment much because I never played it.
|
The perfect RPG for me would be a final fantasy X with the graphics of final fantasy XIII, without a character like Yuna and with the dialog options/ humour of dragon age.
Now that would be more than just perfect. |
Not familiar with Dragon Age so I can't comment too much on that Ven. I hear it's good though. It's one of the games I need to snatch off my brother.
Eternal Darkness sounds right Serra. That's one name I didn't try. I was reading through game lists to find it. |
My ideal RPG, is something along the lines of Final fantasy 13's battle system fused with a final fantasy 12's battle system. But you can't level up, you can't trade with other people. But they may "assist" you in things. And there is millions of equipment and only a certain amount of them all. A lot of quests, and thousands of secret dungeons and lairs. You are given only a selected few skills to choose from, some races have different amounts.
.... Something along those lines would be my idea RPG XD |
Why no levelling up? I would think it would get a little boring after a while being pretty much the same the whole time. Getting better equipment does count for some things but you'd be limited by what you have in your possession.
|
Eternal Darkness!! omg I saw a bit of a let's play about that - spoiled me a bit because I actually own the game but haven't played it XD I don't have tiiiime ;_________;
I really really want to though, because it looks great |
It was fun to watch, I can say that much. My friend was mostly playing. The way the playthrough works is neat. Do play it when you get the time. :)

The point is to explore, and do hard quests getting new equipment or something along those lines. WHY CANT I FIND A GAME LIKE THAT! D= |

You could always just not save the game when you play, or start a new character when you die on principle.

If the object is to finish the game than yes, but if the point is to play until you die then balance doesn't matter so much. The game just gets meaner. I imagine it could be done with any game that has mutliple life countdown. Finishing those styles of games with only one life is something of a standard for bragging rights back my friends all played.
|
I should probably mention that the game I heard about being developed was an MMO, and would have allowed players to bargain with the death god if they'd been able to acquire the souls of powerful creatures.
It also was going to feature completely random character generation, simulating one's lot in life IRL. :p |
My niece just showed me this. I have to share, it's awsome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWu6YeRg2N4 Found Twilight Princess for cheap today. Since the re-release the price dropped. I played the game through with my sister first (she was human Link, I was wolf Link). I like the style of game the Zelda games are, but this onen does suffer the mass-annoying-flying-thing epidemic that a certain other game shares, though not to such a nasty degree. |
I must say Quiet i loved the Elder Scroll games to for the fact that it was open ended along with you can build your character any way you choose. I loved that i could make a mage that wore heavy armor, I might not have been as effective but you were still able to kill things. I highly exited for Skyrim and hope it live up to what i want it to be. Any type of online aspect would be awesome as well but i highly doubt that.
|
That would be awesome, especially a multiplayer world of sorts, but I imagine it would be a nightmare to maintain and run effectively. It might be something I'd actually buy a membership for. I'd settle for linked play though, it that were any easier. Dunno.
There is a massive Skyrim thread in the games forums too if you haven't yet been. :) I tend to go for light armour myself because I like to be speedy and have free carrying space to take piles of loot from whatever hidden cove I'm breaking into. I think it's awsome that in the Elder Scrolls games, light armour is actually competetive with the heavier types. |
