Even though he was being silent he was far from inactive in his mind, too many thoughts to tell the truth. The fact that the mountains would be a pain was only half of it. They had to get there. One such task was dealing with a rumored kingdom that laid in the way. He disliked the thoughts of dealing with humans but it seemed it wasn't avoidable. Plus it was known certain groups did not take well to magical beings, looking down upon them even.
Even with the fairy and himself a group of well armed humans could be a issue.. there were ways to bind the magical beings and their powers. For the time being he kept this thought to himself. No point in bringing it up to her, not yet. |
Dalea paused all of a sudden when he just kept on walking. She blinked and stared over to the right of them. There was a girl standing near the them that she'd just noticed. It had been a good thing that she'd hidden her wings before she had seen her. "Var.." She called to him without looking away from the child.
He stopped hearing the fairy speak as he turned to look at her. "what now?" He asked before following her gaze noticing the small child. He stood there for a moment before shrugging slightly. "it's just a child, leave it be and lets go." He was still in the wood elf form that he had never left from the first meeting so he hardly looked out of place to a human, though he did notice the fact she had her wings hidden, that simplified things a bit.
Dalea looked at Vor and blinked as he started to walked away. "But, she's all alone." She thought for a moment, then headed towards the girl. The girl looked up and her eyes got large. Dalea stopped a few feet from her. "Do not worry. I won't hurt you. What're you doing here all alone." The girl slowly smiled and walked up to her. "I'm a pixie, fairy child. Don't worry, as long as you keep it from the dryad, I'll help you out." Dalea blinked, confused. She'd always been warned to be wary of pixie deals. She nodded slowly and cocked her head to the side. "What sort of help can you provide me?" The pixie giggled and held out her hand, dropping a small necklace into Dalea's hand. It looked like a plain leather rope with a woodcarved pendent. She looked confused, but the pixie spoke up. "Wear it and you'll be safe through your journeys." She then turned and walked away. Dalea was stuck staring after her and looked at the necklace. She shrugged and hung it around her neck, then caught up with Var.
Once she caught up he sighed a little "see was it so hard leaving her there?" It seemed a bit cold true, but he wasn't one to give kindness to those who so willingly destroy the place he once called home. Though he did use to.. back when the peace was held between the races. Those years were long past now. He never gave the child much more thought as they walked, it never bothered him in the least when it came right down to it.
Dalea gave him a cold look, but soon ignored him. She fingered the pendent as they went and soon became tired. She tried not to show it, but anyone could tell by the way she drug her feet slightly. She was still watching the sky though. She'd never really gone this far away from home before and didn't know how long it would take to get to this dryad haven of Vor's.
"You know.. I said tell me if you get tired" He didn't really direct the question to her, though it was seeing as she was the only other person there. But he could hear the way she was walking. Though he figured she might go about being stubborn saying she was fine and try to push forward. "I could be wrong though" He shrugged a little. "your choice if we stop now or later, just remember out here there is a chance later might not happen."
Dalea blinked at the dryad, then sighed and nodded. "Yes, I'm tired. I've been patoling for three days before I even found you." She rubbed her face a little, trying to wake up. "Maybe...we could stop for just an hour?" She hated asking for rest when he seemed just fine, but she didn't feel like she could keep going without passing out.
He looked back at her a bit oddly before laughing weakly. "please say you didn't really waste three days trying to find me when I wasn't even hiding.. " Though he guessed he could see the trouble in finding one dryad in the forest they had left, it was one of the largest remaining forests, well largest that still held magic anyway.
"if that's all you need, there's a small collection of trees near here.. we'll go there to at least be out of sight for the most part." Also it was probably safer then just resting where they were at, just probably though. Once they got to the spot he spoke of he sighed a little putting a hand on one of the trees. He never said a word about what he was thinking though it was probably written on his face that this place upset him a little. |
Dalea blushed. "No. I wasn't just looking for you. I had other creatures to visit." She had checked on a pixie and wandering elf before she came to him. Then she blinked and looked at him, then looked at the patch of trees. That made her smile, she was looking forward to resting.
When they got there, her wings sprung out from her back again and fluttered excitedly. She was confused as to her sudden mood lift, but went with her instincts. It led her to a small tree in the center of the small group of trees. "Look, Var! Its a sapling." She'd rarely seen saplings in present day. They were rare to grow back on their own. |
"hrm.. your a strange one.." walk over to where she was with the sapling. "this type shouldn't even be growing here." He seemed to tilt his head a little at the thought. "it'd require a mother tree for the seed but there's none here.. though i guess odds could have it a bird .. but still it shouldn't be growing here." Not that it was a bad thing but it worried him a little, the sapling may not survive the weather here.
"Eh maybe there's hope yet for the world.. though i somehow doubt it." What annoyed him more is if he had the powers from ages ago this tree would make it.. just for the fact it was so far from home. Though he sighed a little before looking around at the other greenery of this area. Would he do something if he could? Maybe, though he knew the fate of this little lush area. |
The fairy looked at Var, confused, but then her happiness returned and she laid near the sapling. As she slept her energy would return to her and any plant would benefit from it. Her mother thought this a worthless thing because they slept underground and for such a short time.
Even noticing her confused look he wasn't going to explain what he meant by his random chatter about the tree. It was meant for the warmer lands not here. It would be lucky if it survived. Though he couldn't really worry about it seeing as he had no control over if it lived or not. Not yet anyway, maybe if this journey turned out well he could come back here.
For now all he could do was wait. If he was lucky the elders wouldn't punish him for the vows he broke, but he wasn't sure really. Tales of this forest where the dryad capital was.. were mostly just legends anymore. No one had reported being to the place in years. The thought of going was almost laughable. A fools quest, though what choice did he have, returning to the forest was out of the question. Let alone he doubted this fairy would let him turn around so easily.. what did she really hope to gain from helping him. Even if they made it there he'd be a simple dryad, if not soon to be a dead one once the elders heard or rather got a hold of him. If the elders really were there still they already knew.. |
Dalea slept with a soft smile on her face. She was dreaming of the past civilization that was once here. Life was everywhere and trees were tall and healthy. A full assortment of creatures roamed under the lushious canopy. If Var had paid attention, he could see that she was dreaming and as she did, she drew strength from the pleasent dreams. She glowed ever so softly and little streams of light came from her finger tips and into the ground.
He was half paying attention, though his mind was busy on other thoughts. The further he went from his tree the weaker he'd get and he knew it. Even if there was a seed or a sapling of it near it'd hardly help in the long run.. it was probably why the journey to the capital was never recommended.. it would take a long time if the traveling dryad had to replant the tree they were bound to.. let alone that the ability to do so was lost now.
After a while he did settle down with his back against a tree her had been near. He couldn't say he really feared death.. not when it would just be returning to the earth. Though he did fear it at the same time, in his forest he had a purpose at the least something to protect. Here he had too much damn free time to think. Though the soft glow from the resting fairy was enough to distract his mind from the thoughts he was having. To admit it he had never seen something like this happen before. Though on that note he had never watched a fairy sleep either as creepy as it seemed now. |
Dalea woke about an hour and a half later, the tree had grown six inches and was sprouting leaves. She blinked at it, then smiled brightly and giggled happily. She leaned into the plant and could see little insects starting to use the plant as home. She looked up at Var and smiled. "Look, it grew!"
Flinching from her sudden outburst seeing as he had turned and stopped paying attention to her sleeping state. He was about to ask if she had lost it finally though he couldn't seeing as she wasn't lying about the sapling growing a bit. "heh.. next time yell a bit louder." Though out of curiosity he did move back over towards her and the sapling. ".. anything else I should know before this journey goes much further? Making things grow isn't a common ability.."
Dalea blinked at him, then blushed. "So you saw, huh? My mother said I glowed when I slept." She slowly leaned back on her hands and crossed her legs. She looked up at him thinking. "Well, that depends. I have many many secrets. What would you like to know?" She was just messing with him now, but there was no lie in her voice. She did have powers that other fairies didn't, but what those powers were and their origin were secret.
"it t'was a bit hard to miss yes... good thing we weren't hiding." He smirked a little finding it a little funny in truth. Though when she took his question seriously he laughed weakly. "it was a joke.. if I ask anything of you i'd feel obliged to provide you with a answer to a question of your own. Personally I'd rather not." He shrugged a little but had a point in his words.
"either way if your done with your nap we should get moving again. But if your not ready we can stay a bit longer I don't think you were glowing bright enough to draw attention." He smiled slightly picking at her a little, she'd probably make him regret those words later and he knew it. |
Dalea's eyes looked mischievous. But she smiled and hopped up, gliding down the last couple inches to land on her feet. "Well, lets shove off. Can't waste any more time than we have to." She'd remember every word he'd said, for future reference.
"Eh im sure you have plenty of time to waste" He shrugged a little before he started to walk off already hardly waiting for her in the least. Though truth be told he had been use to being alone by now so waiting on someone was wasn't in his habits anymore. Though he did still have a few odd thoughts on ways to lose her so she wasn't following him for the whole trip.
(sorry for the lame post >.<) |
(it ok. Mine is probably gonna be lame too)
Dalea wandered behind him sometimes, then others beside him. She never got in front of him because she couldn't keep an eye on him that way. She blinked once she thought of something and flew up next to him. "Hey. I'm curious. How do you know where you're going?" |
He laughed slightly at her question "in truth.. I don't. I'm going on this based off of tales and stories I've heard over the years... I have a general idea where to go.. but I can't really promise it's the right direction." He shrugged slightly. "you still have time to leave while you have the chance, I can already tell you that more then likely we'll cross a few human towns we won't be able to avoid ... and most likely we won't go undetected.." He seemed to shrug tat off as well though.
Dalea listened to him, then thought for a while. "I have another question, have you ever been in a human city before?" She than moved in front of him and stopped. "They aren't as cruel as many have been led to believe. Yes, they destroy our lands but most don't even know thats whats happening."
He sighed a little and stopped walking as she moved in front of him. "once... when there was only five guardians of the forest left. We tried reasoning with them, saying they needed to stop killing the heart trees.. the forest wouldn't go anywhere if they just left well enough alone." He didn't go on to explain the rest of the tale, he didnt think h needed to with how the world was now. "I know they aren't all the same but i have little respect left for their kind."
Dalea looked at him, studying him. She sighed and looked at her feet, inches from the ground. She would be looked at oddly now that she thought of it, if she were to go into a city in her clothes with no shoes. She'd be pegged instantly for what she was. Then she looked at Vor and thought he would be too. She thought deeply without moving, then studied him. "I have to admit that I have little respect for them myself, but I've been shocked quite a few times of the generousity of the humans." She flew around him in circles now. "I wonder if I could carry you." She suddenly said randomly.
"theres a few good ones.. I'll agree.. but far too few." He had his own stories with them but he didn't feel like sharing. Though her next question caught him off guard a little as he rolled his eyes a little before moving to walk around her. "I would not advise trying.."
Dalea kept the subject on whether she were strong enough to carry him. She flew beside him with a grin. "Aw, come on. I bet I could. You don't look to heavy and I'm stronger than I look." She was actually alot stronger than she looked, but she wanted him to be surprised.
"No doubt you could... but I'll remind you I can change my weight as well.. I am part tree and i didn't lose that ability.. " He glared a little at her not wanting her to try. "Stop looking at me like that I already said no, I really don't think you want to see my true form when I'm annoyed.. " She had her warning and he was willing to back it up if needed.
Dalea blinked at him. "I have't annoyed you yet? Thats strange. I wasn't trying or anything, but I'd have thought I'd been naturally annoying." She flew in little loops, loving the amount of energy she had now. When she leveled herself with him, she smiled. "Please lighten up. Its not like I'm asking horrible things."
"Eh working on it.. but i think thats fairies in general." he shook his head a little thinking that he was traveling with one and it was one he couldnt get rid of. "I'll lighten up .. when i need to" He shrugged a little "I'm not really that tense to tell the truth, this how I normally talk. You get this way after being alone for so many years." He smirked slightly before going back to his walking, he didn't really mean to be cold or uptight as she put it but it's how he was anymore.
Dalea smiled, coming up with a scheme. "Hey, what do you enjoy doing? What's fun to you?" She fluttered there beside him, determined to have him loosen up.
"fun?... what kind of question is that?" it was a bit odd.. though should be a expected question from a fairy. "It use to be my job.. more recently it has been killing those stupid enough to enter the grove without permission .. " He shrugged off her odd look she was giving him. "my kind was created for the simple purpose of protecting the groves and ensuring green life stayed lush on this world..saying we have a idea of fun is a little silly almost." Sure there were a few things over the years Dryads called fun but nothing he had done in quite some time.
Dalea sighed. This guy had been wound way way too tight over the long years of almost complete solidtude. She looked thoughtful, then smiled. "Well, how about....just laying in the sun? Absorbing the warmth and life. I enjoy that, what about you? It makes me feel empowered and protected." She knew it was weird to be sharing such personal feelings with him, he probably thought so too.
Isn't that a general enjoyment.. also seeing as I need that light to live from day to day not sure if I'd call it fun.. heh.." He laughed weakly. Though she seemed unconvinced by his answer. He sighed finally before speaking again. "rivers.. I enjoy being around them though one hasn't flowed in our area for quite some time now."
Dalea rolled her eyes at his answer, then waited for a real one. She smiled at his answer, happy that she got something out of him that wasn't a snide remark or something a little mean. "Rivers, huh? There used to be one there, but the current changed and it went underground. It ran through part of our mound, flooding half of our dwellings. We had to dig out more homes." She thought for a moment, then smiled. "We should find you a river or stream or something."
"Not quite that big of a deal .. besides the ability to relocate is lost to most if not all of my kind. I say most in hopes it's not a lost skill like the others." He sighed heavily. "even if i could move, whats the point when that area would soon fall to the humans as well. They don't follow the old pacts nor do they listen."
Dalea did not like where the conversation was heading. She thought quicly and closed her eyes. She landed and started walking for a moment, sending her energy in to the ground. She was trying to find a large collection of running water. She gasped softly and opened her eyes, shooting high into the air. She came back down after a moment, all smiles. "There is a quaint river to the south. Not very large, but still a river."
He laughed slightly listening to her. "I already said it's hardly a big deal, who knows in another few hundred years a new river might come through the grove." He shrugged. "besides.. if i left for good who would watch the fairies home? Even if I'm currently banished from it there are ways of getting pardons. Just most of them are not pleasant."
Dalea puffed out her cheeks, looking rather cute. "I'm trying to make you have fun, dangit. Now, come with me to the river, or I'll knock you out again and take you there myself." She was exagerating of course, but she wanted him to know that she meant that she wanted him to enjoy himself.
