"I don't doubt it," Randy replied as they headed back down the stairs.
"Speaking of all grown up, Little Randy gets bigger every time I see her," said Kurt.
"My princess growin' up fast," Randy remarked. "Lotsa trainin' an' testin' comin' up..."
"Are you nervous?" asked Kurt.
"Yeah." Randy nodded. "But I'll be proud a' my baby no matter what."
"Just make sure she gets through it all, she is mostly a human," said Kurt.
"It'll be tough," sighed Randy, "but I'll see 'er through it. Speakin' of which, there's somethin' I wanna bring up, but it can wait 'til we get out there."
Kurt nodded, "Alright, there's something I want to bring up too, when we have the time and are properly alone,"
"Oh yeah? Well, let's get on out there, then," said Randy. He leaped down the remaining stairs and scooped up the nearest baby before any more clothing could be shed.
They arrived at the shore where Gloria and Baby took the children to a spot on the sand to build sand castles.
"A'right, sug'." Randy gave Kurt a friendly slap. "Where we headed?"
"Well if you like fishing we're going out to sea," said Kurt as he lead him to the dock where a boat waited.
Randy leaned forward to smell the air. "That'll be nice," he remarked.
Kurt boarded the boat with him and cast off, heading for the open sea, "It's beautiful here," he said leaning his head back to let the breeze ruffle his hair.
"Mmhmm." Randy leaned against the side of the boat, gazing out at the water. "Say, what'd you wanna tell me?"
Kurt chewed his lip, "Well the truth of the matter is that in a few weeks my 25th anniversary as Kenny's police chief is coming up,"
"Yeah, it is." Randy eyed him. "You... you plannin' somethin'?"
"I'm going to retire," said Kurt.
Randy's ears lowered. "For real?"
Kurt nodded, "It's time," he said, "The city's crime rate is a record low, Thompson is overdue for promotion and with all of our records and legal transactions going into a new, cutting edge computer system there's really not much left for me to offer, I'm an old cop, I'm used to doing everything manually, the old-fashioned way, these new systems and methods that are being implemented are beyond my capabilities and I would rather go out now of my own accord than wait for me to be obsolete and put out to pasture."
Randy nodded. "Then what'll you do?" he asked.
"....Then I'll lift my vampirism and become a human again," said Kurt.
Randy fell silent. Human again... There were a lot of implications behind that statement, the biggest of which being that as a human, Kurt would grow old and die. Though he'd suspected that it would be coming, the reality of this news struck Randy quite heavily. He looked over at Kurt, studying him for what felt like a very long moment. "I'm glad you could make it to this point," he said at last, knowing what the decision meant--and what it would mean in the future.
Kurt smiled, "So am I, and I'll be happy to have the rest of my years here,"
Randy smiled back faintly. "It's gonna be hell on me seein' you get old, though," he admitted.
Kurt gave him a kiss, "I'm already old, you just can't tell from looking,"
"I know, I know," sighed Randy. He wrapped his arms around him tightly.
Kurt nuzzled his hair, "It's not so bad, I'll still have around fifty years," he said.
"You know that don't seem like much to me..." Randy gave him a kiss. "But I'll be there for every one of 'em."
"I hope so," said Kurt, "I'd be awfully sad if you weren't,"
"I wouldn't leave my sugarpuss," Randy cooed playfully.
Kurt snorted, "Sugarpuss...."
"My one and only," Randy replied, ruffling Kurt's hair.
"What were you wanting to talk to me about?" asked Kurt.
"Well... there's been talk about a measure bein' put into place that would have all the special-class sterilized," Randy answered with a frown.
"Oh? So you mean...Little Randy and others like her and you wouldn't be able to produce offspring?" Kurt asked with a frown.
"If it turns out she is for sure, then yeah," said Randy. "An' me, Liam, Oliver, everybody I trained with an' any offspring they mighta had who took after them in that way."
Kurt frowned, "Oh one hand that seems unfair, but on the other, I can't deny that it might be in the best interest of the humans who live here, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who ended up with an unwanted pregnancy and that sort of thing could easily kill a human. But then again, if you break the law you can always just be sent to jail and the aftermath of any unwanted pregnancies dealt with, so I don't see that there's really a need," he pondered aloud, "There's also the fact that in today's world special class is far less useful than it might have been in the beginning so putting an end to the gene may be best for everyone.....individual rights vs civil responsibilities is always a tough call."
"There's already been less an' less of us in every population we're born to," Randy explained. "Special class has been on its way out for a long time, an' it's got to a point where it does more harm than good, so the idea is to help things along an' avoid... genetic mishaps like little Randy. It's already been done on a few other planets. There's been debate about doin' it on Earth since my generation was born, an' now that it's been proven that it can be passed on to human half-breeds... the sterilization is likely to start happenin' here soon."
"Might be for the best, but what if little Randy wants children some day? Can you live with them taking that from her?" asked Kurt.
