Well, I don't want to rush through the scene. I'd rather put it on hold than risk that.

Red Lion 04-01-2013 01:44 AM

indeed, I think another post or so and that will be it for me tonight.

uncledaddy 04-01-2013 01:48 AM

Neh

...did you ever watch the Lorax?

Red Lion 04-01-2013 01:49 AM

I did.

......I disliked it immensely. It had one or two instances where I thought it was mildly funny but over all I thought it was kind of stupid and....un seusslike.

uncledaddy 04-01-2013 02:01 AM

Aww. There were definitely things about it that I could have done without, and no it didn't feel particularly... Seussical? But as a movie on its own being based on that book, I did like it.

Red Lion 04-01-2013 02:04 AM

I think it all comes down to the fact that once-ler got on my nerves more than I enjoyed him and the fact that the villain was as one dimensional and unnecessary as they come kinda killed it for me. I also wasn't big on the Lorax himself.

Roo, is time to fire up the steam?

uncledaddy 04-01-2013 02:08 AM

I thought they did well with the Lorax. He kinda seemed exactly how I'd expect him to be from the book. Annoying but just trying to do his job... XD
and I totally liked the Once-ler no matter how many liberties they took with him shhhhhhh
but pretty much everything else was...ehhhhhhhhh
though if you're gonna make a whole big back story to do all that jazz, I don't think it's a bad direction they went in at all. Just cheap execution that could have been done better if they'd avoided all the really cliche things rather than made them the main focus.

and is yes.

Red Lion 04-01-2013 02:12 AM

Eh, I felt the back story was pointless, Once-ler's old man scenes were ok but the rest of the time I didn't really care for his dialogue, he felt so...teenagery. The jokes also didn't work for me most of the time.

My problem with the Lorax was mostly the actor they chose, I just kept hearing Danny Devito being every Danny Devito character ever and I started tuning him out.

And arrooo....Ok then.

uncledaddy 04-01-2013 12:58 PM

I think all my issues with the film can be summed up by saying they tried to make it too teenagery, appealing to all the things that people in the eight to fourteen age range think is cool or cute or funny. You have the annoying portrayal of the fish and the bears, which are basically your Thing 1 and Thing 2 or the minions from Despicable Me, because people adored those. You have your teenage main characters and your typical boy-wants-girl romance plot, and even a crazy-but-surprisingly-wise butt-kicking granny, and the would-be-scary-but-too-small-and-doofy villain. All of which people really love, especially young people because they haven't seen enough of these things in their lifetime for them to seem over-done and corny to them yet. They're still novel and right on the same level of maturity as the audience. And when we consider who the target audience really is, well... Not saying it's a good thing, but they're basically just "doing what works".

I don't follow actors all that much; I may be familiar with Danny Devito, but all I hear when watching the movie without knowing beforehand who did what is Lorax. I think the voice and characterization of him was spot-on.

There are a lot of directions in which the whole Once-ler thing could have been taken, and while I'm tired of seeing all the same types of characters, myself, I do think the way they did it worked well enough with the story that it didn't really bother me. If you're going to go the route of giving him his own back-story, at least.

Aaaand I thought the music and animation were quite decent.

So overall I do like it enough that I'd watch it again at some point, even though I recognize its flaws from a mile away, and it's not going in my bin of top favorites any time soon. Thankfully, the most cringe-worthy parts IMO were not a big enough part of the main attraction to ruin it.

Ernya's april fool's day thing was a panda head which will supposedly only be in the inventory for today.
