I keep trying to remember what the white stuff is on new born babies that has to be cleaned off, my brain keeps calling it matrix but I'm not sure that's right at all. Not the same as afterbirth, I'm pretty sure. Sorry, repetitions of 'birth' put the thought in my head and now I have to pursue it or it will never go away.

Oh, birth matrix is how they propagated the species on Krypton. That's where that thought spawned.

But I wasn't too far off because the actual thing I was thinking about is called VERNIX. Apparently it's there to protect the skin as it's developing inside the uterus and for the few hours following birth. Something similar to that should be invented for burn victims...
