That just all went over my head....

I was actually just thinking about what I'd do if I ever played...With my pathetic strength/stamina, I'd probably be best at using a dagger. Problem with that is most players seem to wield swords. Looooong swords. Even using double daggers, I'd get owned.

A staff (if legal?) would probably be my best option, but you can't really kill with a staff.

Coda 02-10-2011 12:19 AM

Games like this use padded weapons that tend to be quite lightweight. As I mentioned a couple pages ago, the most popular swords on my field only weighed a few ounces despite being over 3' long. So strength isn't actually a big deal.

One thing about double daggers is that it brings you into closer range. Players who get used to using long swords often don't know how to strike someone that's right up next to them. Learn to not be afraid of getting close and you'll be at an advantage. Also, if you put your weapon up against the base of your opponent's blade (again, easier if you get close) you essentially control where their weapon is going to go.

The weapons very somewhat by game system. A good overall review of Amtgard and Belegarth along with several other battle game systems can be found in the book Battle Gaming: The New American sport.

*points at BattleGaming? Is that an actual person, or Coda? XD

Coda 02-10-2011 05:52 PM

I'm not sure. Superficially it looks like a bot, but the fact that it's pinpoint-targeted to the right thread and names the right games (and not any other games in the genre) seems to indicate that it's a human. In fact, I suspect perhaps that it's someone quite proud of their new book Googling for discussions where they can plug it.

BattleGaming, so I don't have to ban you for advertising... mind poking your head in here again to prove your legitimacy?

Hermes 02-10-2011 05:53 PM

Well, hopefully it's nothing like that~ I mean, one of my mules is named Belegarth, JUST because I want nobody from Bel to get the idea to come advertise here, and therefor, I have the name, I can represent the group XD

Plugs= FAIL

Panzerkit 02-13-2011 10:42 PM

I've done Amtgard a lot and Dagohir a bit . . . I don't recall there being much roleplaying in either, though I believe Coda at one point was going to write a backstory for my character

Coda's glaive was very awesome, it was my favorite offhand weapon. My favorite weapon was probably my very first weapon, which was either a long one handed sword or a short two hander, which due to wear became curved and thus called a nodachi

The only reason I didn't wear heavy armor was due to a lack of crafting skills and money, I love full plate as a concept . . . I mostly just wore cloth or leather

Archery is an awesome thing, but I am horrible at it, reloading is a nightmare

And clerics rule in 3.0, are my second favorite class. I'm not convinced they are overpowered though, Nanako the Cleric was tough, but not sure any tougher than anything else

Iggy 02-13-2011 10:47 PM

That sounds interesting and fun/
I love midevial things!

Coda 02-13-2011 10:51 PM

Yes, you read that correctly: Panzerkit was using my 4'6" glaive as an OFFHAND weapon. XD

Panzerkit 02-13-2011 10:55 PM

It was longer than that, with the glaive grounded it was as tall as I am (which was one of the advantages of using it as an offhand weapon, if I went defensive it could protect my entire body vertically, or I could use it to slash and stab at things out of sword reach offensively . . . . my main tactic was to use the glaive to poke and slash to encourage people to close to sword range, then turn the glaive defensive and cover my body as I attacked with the sword . . . then if they fell back attack with the glaive again)

I also had a buckler strapped to my glaive arm and usually had a few javelins. Id tuck my sword under my arm when I was throwing javelins

Coda 02-13-2011 11:03 PM

Are we thinking of the same glaive...? The one with the white blade and silver handle? I dunno, maybe it was around 5'... Then again I am considerably taller than you.

Panzerkit 02-13-2011 11:13 PM

Yeah, silver with white blade . . . . it came up well past my shoulder

Bonnie 02-14-2011 03:38 AM

So, after being long disenchanted that there might not be people playing amtgard in my general area, I found out that one of my best friends not only plays it, but he was talking about playing it over the weekend on facebook.

I'm going to have to ask him if I can join him sometime, at least to watch at first...

Hermes 02-16-2011 11:25 AM

Uhm....I've used our two largest weapons, Boneshaker and BAMFA, a giant axe and a giant scimitar, and actually kicked ass. ^^; It's all a matter of "How insane ARE you~?"

And....Jeebus, you must be strong O__O Carrying three javelins, a glaive, and a sword o.o

Coda 02-16-2011 02:47 PM

That's less about strength -- all of those weapons except the no-dachi are fairly light -- and more about encumbrance, since of course padded weapons are really rather bulky.

Big weapons CAN be effective, in no small part because people used to fighting against smaller, lighter weapons will be intimidated as well as not know the right way to block them -- big weapons just MOVE differently. But against someone who knows how to fight against both large weapons and small weapons you're actually better off with the small weapons.

Hermes 02-16-2011 02:52 PM

well, see, these things are friggin heavy, so..... it actually is somewhat strength xD

And...Well, kinda. It really depends what KIND of weapon. Though...give me a couple of small clubs, hammers, or axes? And prepare for havoc.

Give me a javelin? HELL. YES.

Coda 02-16-2011 09:16 PM

But the weapons Panzerkit was wielding weren't nearly as heavy as yours. :P

Hermes 02-17-2011 03:34 PM

Ah. well, still, lots of encumbermant.

Also, if you see my roleplay, Fortriu? It's actually based off my Bel realm and character XD

Panzerkit 02-18-2011 06:03 PM

I also had my shield and usually a shortsword!

But yeah, light stuff. Bulk was issue, not weight

With my new armor though weight soars into the picture

I don't actually move any slower though, I've never moved fast . . . I did however unbalance myself on a dodge and fell over, and thanks to my lack of strength and my armor I needed help getting back up

Hermes 02-27-2011 04:28 PM

Ouch DX

I don't wear armor, at all. I'm big on agility, always have been *Is Archery captain, so this sould be obvious*

I need my quick dodges and such. I mean, the easiest way for me to take down a red fighter? I can fight circles around em all day.

Coda 03-03-2011 02:15 PM

Well, playing as a monk and as a wizard I wasn't ALLOWED to wear armor -- class restrictions, you know -- but I did manage to achieve level 2 warrior just from fighter practice and I had a really nice cloth armor shirt I had made. I don't know what happened to it but it LOOKED like armor so it was pretty popular.

Coda 03-15-2011 12:55 PM

So I hear Panzerkit has some new armor and is working on constructing a new sword.

I must say: Amtgard construction rules HAVE evolved since 6.1 when I played. The current rules revision is 7.6 and it requires a full six inches of legal striking material on any stabbing point. This is, if you ask me, absurd. It invalidates every weapon in my inventory, which all have between 1.5" and 3" of stab foam. 6" is just CRAZY, especially if the weapon is a dagger -- 6" of stab foam on a dagger basically means that you have a handle with a blade completely made of foam. @.@ (Edit: *research* Oh, wait, the rule specifically refers to stab-ONLY weapons. Disregard! Actually the new weapon construction rules are a lot less ambiguous and overall I can't criticize except for the aforementioned courtesy padding on pole weapons.)

It seems 7.6 also switched the official rule to shot-in-motion; I always played atomic-clock because shot-in-motion was really hard to judge with some of our fighting styles. On the other hand, shot-in-motion has been explicitly defined as a 0.5 second window... which makes Brandon all that more lethal because he can definitely land a hit in that amount of time.

Coda 12-27-2015 12:04 AM

I found an Amtgard field locally, after having not played in nearly a decade. It feels SO good to be getting back into this, and it's done WONDERS for both my physical and emotional health.

I still have one of my old swords that's still in good enough shape to be considered legal (though I had to replace the cover because the rules now say it has to be an OPAQUE cloth cover), and it's been funny to use it -- that sword is older than anyone else's Amtgard career on the field! It's also been funny to see people reacting to a sword that LIGHT, because they all use kite spar or fiberglass for weapon cores and rolled foam for blades so they're used to weapons with more heft. My old sword's still totally LEGAL, but this group just isn't used to it.

My son has started playing with me. I made him a suit of armor out of canvas and 3/8" foam, so it provides some actual protection in addition to a point of in-game armor. He's gotten surprisingly good rather quickly, and as long as he keeps up the offense instead of getting silly or scared I have to pay attention and try or else he CAN and WILL beat me.

Currently I'm working on a greatclub, because polearms aren't shield-breaking anymore. >_<

Den 12-27-2015 03:53 AM

I'd love to be able to participate in a group, but I don't know of any near me...

Lawtan 12-27-2015 10:10 AM

Same .-.
There is supposedly an Atlatl group (not medieval, but still rather interesting), but I haven't found them.

Coda 12-27-2015 03:58 PM

I finished that greatclub:

https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...30291305_o.jpg

It's very small for a greatclub. ;) I intentionally made it the absolute smallest I could while still technically qualifying as a greatclub (48" long, 18" of 4" diameter padding plus 6" of 1/2"-thick courtesy padding), so that it would be lighter, faster, and easier to wield, especially since there's a decent chance my son might be using it from time to time.

I've named it "The Horn of Joshua" because it has the shield-crushing special ability. The walls will come tumbling down.

Coda 02-21-2016 12:36 AM

My Amtgard field just hosted a big event, and we had a TON of fun.

Here's me in full monk action:

SparX 02-21-2016 11:47 AM

I haven't gone to a field since almost 2011 XD I still have all my weapons though, me and my husband were smiths for a while.

Coda 12-19-2017 11:25 PM

Brushing this thread back off again!

I've talked about my cloth scale armor in other threads around the site. It was a ridiculous amount of labor, but it looks beautiful. I've won awards with it. But it's BARELY two points, and it's entirely up to the field champion's discretion -- my current champion is only giving it one point. :/ The hassle is making me not want to bother making more.

So I'm pondering over how to get something easier to make, provides better protection (as a scout I can wear three points so I'm not even living up to my potential as it is), and is uncontroversial enough that I don't have to worry about getting docked a point.

I can get a few hundred flat washers for fairly cheap... Maybe using those as metal scale armor?
