masks... so many masks...

Kaderin Triste 04-06-2020 05:33 PM

Recently remembered a project I wanted to figure out how to make on the loom. Am currently making basic pattern to get an idea of dimensions/how it will fit and then figure out how to modify it from there. And add scales.

Even though I don't want to, I may need to make it as a flat piece and then seam it just to make figuring the dimensions easier.

In case anyone's curious, it's this. I want to figure out how to make this with loom knitting:

I have a connected scarf and armwarmer pattern that should work for the base, but I need to test the size and figure out any potential increases and decreases for basic shaping and to make full sleeves instead of the flat "scarf" panel the original pattern has.
As much as I'd like to be able to make my version in the round as well, I'll probably have to make it as a flat panel and then seam it to make the sleeves, which hopefully I can seam it along the scale edge so it's not super visible, but we'll see.

Tldr; I wanna make this cool thing and I have an idea on how I'm gonna do it too.

Don't you have to put the scales on as you weave?

Kaderin Triste 04-06-2020 08:23 PM

As I knit, yes. But I already know how to donthat as I have done fingerless gloves like that before. I just am not 100% sure anout garment shaping and all that yet.

Ooh

Test out the knitting part first. trial and error and all that.

Kaderin Triste 04-06-2020 09:59 PM

Yeah, in my long rambly pist, I did say I was already testing the knit part if it.

ah, sorry, missed that part. once my back stops being as much of a jerk, I'm gonna be working on more masks. I've got the fabric ironed out.

May I ask what pattern you're using and how you are liking it? I don't have sewing experience and am now trying to learn. So I'm looking up several options to experiment with for making my own mask.

I modified a pattern I found online for a three-piece mask into a two-piece mask. The original pattern doesn't print at full size on my home printer, so I had to redraw it, but it was worth it. it covers my nose and mouth nicely, and it covers the majority of the lower half of my face. I just need to swap my original hair ties for some ribbon, because after an hour or so, the hair ties get really uncomfortable, especially when I have to be outside or if I'm shopping somewhere for essentials.

Am probably gonna finish my initial test pattern for the base of the scale shrug thingy today. Woo!
Then to figure out how to modify it for better sleeves (which I actually may have found a semi-helpful video which may give me a good idea on what to do...) and THEN figure out the addition of scales.

Also need to test adding scales with a couple of different stitch patterns just to see how it works out.

Just finished watching "Good Omens". And have ordered a paperback copy of it. which won't get here until next month.

Started making an entrelac scarf today only to discover that the videos I was following along with just sort of stop. Without covering how to do a specific edge section. As in, at the end of the 4th video, it very much sounds like a fifth (and possibly more) video was going to be made to continue teaching the pattern, but there's nothing to be found.
And the last video was uploaded in 2016, so I'm not really hopeful that there will be any updates with the pattern/instructions at this point. XP

This is as far as the videos got me.

I think I know what to do next, but am a little worried about messing it all up.
