well i think that they should plan on staying there a long time. So getting a house and an apartment would be their next step while finding the professor....

Well how about the professor has actually been there for about a month before they actually 'fell' into the world. (I'm thinking she could wear some steampunk kind of thing because that is close to the same era. Or is, I dunno), and she stepped into a crowd of scientists/alchemists since she had to also find a way out. And maybe she finds away to open another portal for them to jump through.

Maybe an apartment, but a house seems.... too permenant to me. /shrugs. Since they are really just going to jump out before long.
