"As in it wont open," Near informed, frowning even more.
"They locked us in." Mail was still frowning as he handed Near back Nate's phone and looked around for something heavy. "What's going on Near?"
"I am not sure," Near informed, bending down to peer at the lock.
"Help me find something to break the handle off with." Mail said quickly.
"Hand me the pen on the desk," Near commented. "The blue one with the red cap."
Mail blinked.
"...Are you sure it's heavy enough?" He asked- not moving. |
"Trust me," Near requested, rather gently.
"...You're lucky I do." Mail said before walking over to the desk and bringing Near back the pen he's requested. "Because anyone else would probably think you're off your rocker."
Unscrewing the top to the pen, Near removed it and a lock pick fell into his hand.
"...Since when could you pick locks?" Mail asked.
"Since I aced every class at Wammy's," Near informed, starting to pick the lock. "Including the martial arts ones."
"...You know martial arts?" Mail raised an eyebrow.
"Is Mail really in a position to disbelieve that?" Near asked him.
"I just never would have guess." Mail chuckled. "I said I trusted ya...but if you aced it, does that mean you can kick everyone's ass?"
"Getting an A in that class does not mean I can beat the students," Near scoffed. "I got an A in art but I cannot draw as well as my sister."
"Still, I bet you're not half bad." Mail chuckled at Near's reaction. "Could you beat Mello?"
"Of course not," Near scoffed. "Mello is third best in the class, behind One and Far, who are tied for first."
"Who the hell are 'One' and 'Far'?" Mail frowned. "...Wait...Zero and One...Near and Far...you serious?"
"Not the most creative, I'll admit," Near hummed as he popped open the lock and slowly turned the handle, peering into the dark hallway.
"...What happens if we meet up with the first or second guy?" Mail asked. "I mean, it seems like they're trying to make us stick around."
"Does Mail mean Roger and Nancy?" Near whispered as he slipped out of the doorway.
"I mean One and Far." Mail replied as he slipped out with Near stealthily.
"Chances are One is gone," Near continued to whisper as he walked down the hall, not making a single noise save for his words. "However Far may still be around if Zero is."
"You think Zero locked us in?" Mail asked. "He'd have to be the one, right? He served us earlier."
"I doubt it," Near commented. "In fact... I am not sure why Zero is still here. He has nothing to gain from it."
"You said he lies...is it possible that you've misjudged him?" Mail asked as they crept to a corner and Mail snuck a peek around into the next hall.
"I happen to lie too," Near informed. "And I am always able to see straight through his lies."
"...That's not what you said earlier." Mail smirked before starting down the next hallway.
Near reached out and grabbed him, dragging him another direction. "Matt's room is this way and as I said... I am a liar."
"That you are." Mail chuckled before he froze and quickly pulled Near into an empty- or at least he hoped so -room as he caught the sound of voices coming towards them.
Near went still as the door was closed after them and debated between checking the room for occupants and pressing his ear against the door.
Mail looked around and realized that it was dark in the room- the lights out. He could just barely make out small forms lying in the twin beds that occupied this room.
Pressing himself against the door, Near listened to the voices in hopes that they weren't aimed for this very room.
"We're doing everything we can to keep their arrival quiet." They heard someone- maybe Roger -saying in the hall as they passed. "Every precaution must be taken.
One of the small forms shifted with a soft groan on one of the twin beds. |
Near's frown grew. Roger was trying to hide his arrival? Had coming to Wammies been a mistake? He had only wanted to learn if Mello and Matt were still alive...
"Oh crap." Mail whispered - Getting Near's attention.
"Shh!" Near told him as quietly as possible, before he followed Mail's eyes toward the twin beds and looked in surprise at the twin pairs of dark eyes staring back at them. "...Shit."
"Who is that!?" One of the little one's burst before Mail jumped over and covered the kid's mouth- the child immediately beginning to struggle in alarm.
Near moved closer and attempted to uncover the boy's mouth.
"Its Matt and Near, dummy!" The second boy hissed quietly. "They're playing sneak out, so shh!" |
"MMPH!" The boy in Mail's arms started thrashing frantically before Mail let him go and fell back.
