"...What are you wearing?" The second boy asked Near, who frowned and looked at Mail in confusion - if Nate was the one who these kids knew as 'Near', these clothes would be normal.
|
"Shh!" Mail said frantically. "Please, they're right outside."
There was a sharp knock on the door then. "Trick...Treat?" Came Roger's voice. |
One of the two boys motioned toward the underside of his bed and Near quickly grabbed Mail and shoved him under there, before dodging under the other side as well.
Trick and Treat both laid back down and one of the two started mumbling, as if he was mumbling in his sleep. |
The door opened and Roger poked his head in- looking at the two boys.
"...You'd better both be asleep." He warned. |
The one above Matt continued to mumble a little and started to toss a turn.
"Sounds like another nightmare," Nancy commented, gently placing a hand on Roger's shoulder. "We should get Zero." |
Roger sighed.
"If it's a prank, he can deal with it this time." Roger mumbled. "Go find Zero then." He slipped out and closed the door. |
The boy continued to mumble for a moment before they actually heard Roger and Nancy's footsteps leave. He then let it die down and poked his eyes open, before leaning down over the edge of the bed.
"So who are you, really?" He asked, peering in at Mail as his long waves of unruly hair spilled onto the floor. "My name's Trick and that's my brother, Treat. He's jumpy, sorry." |
"No shit." Mail replied before checking on Near under the bed across from him.
|
Trick turned his head and peered at Near. "You look like the Near that dad talks about sometimes and this guy's the Matt from TV, right?"
"Dad?" Near inquired, obviously confused. |
Mail was quiet before he snapped his fingers.
"Zero, right?" He smirked. |
"That's him," Trick said, making Near frown even more. "And Far's my papa! Sometimes we call dad mama, but that's just to tease him!"
|
Treat looked over the side of his bed and look at Near curiously. His hair was different, but his eyes and face were the same as his brother's.
"Oh, well that explains a lot." Mail snorted. |
Trick perked his head up, before he quickly bolted back into his bed as someone approached. Treat did the same and both boys laid still as the door was pushed open and Zero peeked in.
|
Mail was still- watching Zero with careful and not entirely trusting eyes.
|
"I know you both are awake," Zero informed as he slipped in and closed the door. "And you are hiding someone under your bed... Near, you can come out, I can see your friend's shoulder."
"Zero always had a keen eye," Near admitted, not moving. "I'm not going to Roger," Zero sighed, his shoulders slumping. "And I know you can tell when I'm lying." "I know that Zero isn't," Near informed, crawling out. "And now I know why Zero and Far stayed here." |
"So this is Near?" Treat asked as he sat up.
Mail slipped out from under the bed. "I'm glad you're on our side." Mail murmured. "It doesn't seem that friendly around here." |
"You have no idea," Zero assured. "I've tried to leave, Near, but... you know how impossible it is to take a kid out of Wammy's."
Near gave a nod and looked between the twins. "Let alone two. Far is still here?" |
"Papa's still here, he'll never leave." Treat put in.
"What do you mean?" Mail asked with a trouble frown- looking between Near and Zero. |
"I am glad he stayed," Near informed. "Can Zero answer me truthfully now about Matt and Mello?"
"You already know the truth," Zero reminded. |
"Maybe you could just say it for him." Mail replied firmly.
|
"They're both alive," Zero informed. "But I haven't the slightest clue where either of them are."
|
"Near, did you hear that!?" Mail suddenly got excited.
|
"Shh!" Zero, Trick, and Treat all hissed.
Near, however, smiled brightly and let out a relieved breath. "Do I ever return home?" He inquired next and Zero's smile fell. |
"Hey, we already changed one thing." Mail said firmly. "We can change it back. We'll get you home...but...this place..."
Mail looked around with a frown. |
"Nate is the one that changed Matt and Mello," Zero corrected. "When he came he stopped L from being killed by Kira."
|
"So why can't you change something." Mail asked. "Maybe that's how it works...maybe you and Nate are the ones that change stuff."
|
"We are the ones that switched," Near informed. "Perhaps Nate is meant to save them and I am meant to send us both home."
"Do you want to go home?" Zero pressed. |
"...What's wrong with going home?" Mail asked curiously.
|
"I have an obligation," Near informed, ignoring Mail.
"You don't owe anything to anyone," Zero replied. |
"Uh, hello?" Mail tried again.
"What's...Ob..bleh...obleh-gay-shone?" Treat asked. |
"Hello, Mister," Trick replied to Mail, grabbing onto his arm and hanging there.
"They've grown quite a bit," Near commented, nodding to the twins. "I remember them when they were still four." "We're twelve now," Trick informed, grinning. "Trick is taller then I am," Near hummed. The boy laughed. "Not quite!" |
Mail frowned and lifted his arm- lifting the boy with it.
"So are you going back Near?" Treat asked. "What's wrong with going back." Mail asked again |
"I am going back," Near said, firmly.
"I think you should think about this," Zero pressed. "I did not ask Zero for his opinion," Near informed. |
"Near, can you get back on your own?" Mail asked.
|
"I don't know how to get back," Near informed, frowning. "Or even how I got here... I wish to see Nate."
"I don't know where he is, either," Zero informed. "They tried for years to get you back but eventually Mello gave up and left... then Matt did and finally Nate took off as well." |
"Well, since you don't know either way," Mail told Near, "You'd better damn well consider that before you think about ignoring me anymore."
|
Near slowly frowned. "Mail... doesn't need to know."
"I think he's seen too much already," Zero informed, gently. "You shouldn't have brought him here, Near... did you even think about the consequences?" "I... didn't," Near admitted, his shoulders going tense. |
"...Well, I'm here now." Mail said firmly. "So there's no going back on that and I'm in it till the end."
He lifted up the cellphone. "I'd like to make this work, I think it'll help." Mail reasoned. |
"Why do you think it will help?" Zero asked, taking the cell and peering at it in confusion, before he looked up at Mail. "We don't need any more outside people coming here..."
"No, but... if Nate still remembers things from when he came here," Trick cut in, sitting on the edge of his brother's bed. "Then wont he remember what date it was and come back here to find Near?" |
"...Wouldn't it be trippy if Nate tries to call us from whenever he's at and it picks it up?" Mail laughed. "Twilight Zone shit."
