Considering that people really got serious about the robot pet fad ... geez, was that really over a decade ago now? ... and one guy in Japan seriously married his video game waifu... and people get torn up over forgetting to take care of their Animal Crossing towns or their Tamagotchis... I would definitely say that humans can adopt AIs into their ingroup.
