I would die in the inside if someone rips up the pages as they read. other than for art purposes like book altering.
|
Random question: what are teh boots and underwear you are wearing Echo? They look nice.
Back on Topic. I'm not that fussy about it since the books he gets are pretty much doomed to end up in discard piles anyway, but part of me does cringe. |
The shorts are from Love letter and the boots are the new flat boots in the commons
|
What about the socks with the stars on them?
*Glares at gungey icky library book. Hoping used bookstore has a less "ick" inducing copy.* Though I'd always rather have a new book, unless the used ones I get are those magical copies that seem to be beautifully worn with no visible damage, it's hard to argue with the savings. |
Celestial Sprite (I think that's how it's spelled)
|
Ah yes, the one I keep never actually bothering to get.
|
I just liked the top on it
|
I treat my books like nice jewelry. Well, sort of. I don't dust them or anything. :P But I don't like bending the books too much when I read them (which is why I prefer hardcovers), and I take the jackets off my hardcover books when I read them because I know I'm a clutz and will probably fuck them up if I don't. I'm very paranoid about letting people borrow my books, because I'll just be angry if I get them back in worse condition than I lent them out in. I don't even like people touching them.. xD
I actually shouted when I read what your dad does to books. XD I can kinda understand it if they're falling apart, but I'm not really gonna buy books that are in such a condition anyways (unless I think I can fix them or it's one I really, really want). |
Well it really does depend on how often one re-reads things, and books like that are darn cheap.
I renewed my library book, yes I'm reading that slowly, but I seem to have now developed a level of comfort or immunity with the gunge. It's been in my hands long enough. :) |
I cant hardly stand it if someone writes in, or dog ears a page. If the page gets dog eared enough the corner will tear. I will buy a used book as long as it's not going to fall apart on me any time soon (and has no dog eared pages)
It's sad that your dad tears up the books as he reads. If I saw that happen it would make me cry. It would be better off to just donate it to the library if they won't be read again. |
Yeah but these books are the kind that even the libraries wont take. We're talking on their last strings of tacky binding here, if there's a cover left to speak of at all, with pages that are probably only half-glued in. You could consider it mercy killing ;).
I write in my college texts. It's almost a right of passage in a way, but I'm still picky about mangled pages. My copy of Hamlet has passages that are coated in a couple different colours of pen and three different colours of highlighter depending on what it was I was looking for at the time. Same goes for some of my poetry anthologies. My book of poetry by Percey Shelley actually used to be my dad's when he was at university so it has two generations of notes in it in pencil and pen. I find that neat actually. |
1) who tears off pages in books when your done reading them, in a year or two you might want to read it again
2) i try to keep books nice but i end up leaving them in my backpack when the books cover will most likely get ripped off, or on my bed, where the book gets all folded |
Has not yet happened so far. The one's he wants to read again he buys in hardcover. That's one book so far.
There's always the library too. ;). |
I now rarely buy books cause now they are online for free (for now)
|
The books I am looking for don't seem to be online line, which is rather annoying at times, but paper books are still cheaper often if I know the specific book I'm looking for. I'm trying to track down mystery novels by Caroline Graham and they'r proving elusive.
|
I'm stil trying to find good cheap mangas, but my problem is that I don't have money in my paypal account, and I'm saving my money for the small things online like the boots that I can't seem to find in stores
|
I don't think you are weird since I generally try and do so with mine or any that are loaned to me. I despise when people mistreat and abuse books.
|
That's not odd at all.
I like keeping my books put up in a neat fashion. I admit that I probably don't read my books in the greatest manor, but at least I don't tear out pages or dog ear. When done with my books, I usually donate them to the local library or to a needy school. |
NO, YOU ARE NOT AN ODDBALL.
I do the EXACT same thing, and it drives people nuts! I can stand there in a bookstore, and literally take 20 minutes comparing which one is in better condition. It makes people who buy me books as gifts frustrated. xD |
When I read, I read. I open the book and enjoy the story.
If it gets a little bent in the process, I dont mind. Usually when im done with a book, I slap a Bookcrossing sticker on the front inside cover and ship it on its way. |
That neat! Haven't seen much like it myself. When I was travelling in Northern Europe hostels often had 'take a book, leave a book shelves' and it was neat to see all the languages they came in, but I didn't want to part with the book I was reading at the time. Decided to lug it home for my shelf, even though I haven't read it since.
|
Haha, Yeah i love Book crossing. Ill even make threads sometimes on websites I go on, and list the books I have with the sticker on it, and offer to ship it to people to get my books to reach another country xD

Haha. It was actually a pretty horrible thing to do. The bible might not be my favorite book, but it's still a book and deserves a little more respect than we gave it. :P
Believe it or not, I don't actually mean to bash religion or offend anyone... I did mean to like seven years ago when I did that, but not anymore. |
I try to take care of my books, but I don't mind if they start to wear after I've read them a few times... that's just natural. I don't leave them folded open or dogear them on purpose though.
That said, I don't really think that "abusing books" is really a terrible thing. The physical book itself isn't really special; it just rolled out of a factory somewhere. I've seen some pretty neat art projects done with old hardcovers and that doesn't bother me, though I know some people flip out if a book is physically taken apart and repurposed like that ^_^* |
I always take care of my books.
I love beautifully aged books. <3 |
