Someone who acts cruel as a front, when in all honesty they're working behind the scenes for our benefit. Usually the character in a tragedy, where the "hero" destroys them in some way, only to find that they were the only thing keeping the world from falling into chaos, at which point the "hero" goes mad and guts himself.

Someone who is truly neutral and is often mistaken for evil due to a refusal to take any side.

(Hence the quotes on hero. There might be, there might not be, but cruel behavior begest cruel enemies, does it not? If one wishes to be cruel, they are to expect cruelty. If one wishes to rule, they must expect assassins and treachery. If one would appear a tyrant, they must expect revolutionaries on all sides.)
