How do you connect the scales to the thread? I have done metal scalemaille, so this is interesting to me.

Also if you use just aluminum scales it shouldn't weigh more than a couple pounds for a full blanket

And it's probably because they're dropbox links, I'll adjust them a bit later.

The only wrong way to cosplay is by being an elitist, judgmental asshole, which you're not, so you keep rocking on.

Tohopekaliga 12-10-2017 09:32 PM

Elitism is definitely bad! If someone likes what they've done, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, I say.

Okay, I had to use the redirect links for dropbox (I think), so...there. Now should be able to see stuff.

Let's see here, there's... Seems like I don't have full costume pictures for most things on hand right now, but here:

I want to say that for needle knit and crochet, you can pre-string the scales.
On the loom, I have to add them as I go. It works best with garter stitch, and wjayt I do is, when I am ready to add a scale, I hold the yarn to the front of a scale, with the back of the scale facing the inside rim of the loom, then pull the yarn back through the scale, forming a loop. I put the loop on the peg and pull the bottom loop on the loom over the top. Repeat on every other peg, then purl back. Then repeat the process, but on the second scale row, you do scales on the pegs you didn't do in the previous section.
Hopefully that makes sense. I can try taking photos to demonstrate when I get home.

I'm working on arm warmers... they have bobbles.

(Incoming double post ;u; )

I keep most of my cosplays on cosplay.com(the site that was once full of cosplayers but now it's more quiet over there but some people do still post, plus I'm what you might call old-fashioned and I prefer to post my cosplay stuff there. D: )

My account would be here: http://www.cosplay.com/member/161584/

Go take a peak if you wish. xD

Mekatra 12-12-2017 05:03 PM

I see you are also a Grell fan. XD You have done SO MANY wow!!

And Toho that stuff looks great! You guys are amazing!

Kaderin, So that actually sounds more complicated than real scale maille, not gonna lie.

Aha yes. XD I used to be a huge Kuro fan, and especially Grell. Though I am still a fan, I'm not as big of one as I used to be. :( But I had some fun times. XD (And might bring Grell back out someday lel)

Tohopekaliga 12-13-2017 09:41 AM

Wow, that's quite a lot of costumes! :O Impressive~

Honestly, I'm just really bad at explaining stuff...
I did take a bad photo tutorial series of pics that I will attempt to upload and share while I am at work and can utilize one of my otherwise useless previous phones (the one I drowned, which still mostly works, but is unable to be reactivated).

Mekatra 12-13-2017 06:20 PM

It might be that knitting or looming is actually harder for me than making chainmaille...

Kaderin Triste 12-13-2017 07:04 PM

Shitty photo tutorial incoming!

Mekatra 12-13-2017 07:49 PM

Yeeeah, that would be way more complicated for me than just making chainmaille haha, that's sooo cool though!

Den 12-13-2017 09:41 PM

yeah, for standard knitting or crochet, you would treat the scales like beads, and prestring them, then position them as you go...

Mekatra 12-14-2017 12:07 AM

This makes sense, but I am still not sure I could turn theory to practice lol

Do you use plastic or aluminum scales for knitting?

Den 12-14-2017 12:51 AM

I've never done it myself, but I've seen plenty of patterns that state that... and as for the scales, I'd imagine aluminum would be more durable.

Mekatra 12-14-2017 12:52 AM

I've used glow in the dark plastic scales for jewelry before. You have to be really trying to break them to be honest.

Den 12-14-2017 01:24 AM

... I've managed to snap sewing needles in my bare hands. and broke one of my interchangeable knitting needle cables. I'm hard on my tools without meaning to be.

I use aluminum. I have seen people use plastic, but the aluminum just has a more authentic dragon appearance in my opinion. I have seen plastic ones used in other projects though.
And I did have a friend ask if I could do a purse with the plastic glow in the dark scales once. I never did make it though since the scales cost more than I could afford at the time plus, based on her previous reluctance to pay a reasonable price for a blanket, I figured she wouldn't want to pay for it.

Den 12-14-2017 08:56 PM

I should probably work on christmas gifts soon...

Mekatra 12-14-2017 10:13 PM

Where do you get our scales from Kaderin? I'm guessing probably the same place that I do. XD

Ugh there's those terrible words again... I should be working.

Den 12-14-2017 10:23 PM

I just have a couple dice bags to sew. nbd.

I get all my scales and most of my chainmaille supplies from The Ring Lord

Den 12-15-2017 08:09 PM

I've got the purple bobble armwarmers on hold... because part of me wanted wrist warmers and got loud enough to be heard... So I started white wrist warmers, and I'll use red yarn to make the bobbles. BECAUSE I CAN.

Kaderin Triste 12-16-2017 02:16 PM

I officially need to make myself a new pair of fingerless gloves as soon as Christmas is over...I keep misplacing mine.

Mekatra 12-16-2017 02:45 PM

YUP. TRL is where I get pretty much all my maille making supplies. They're pretty much unrivaled on quality and price. Plus, I have a serious crush on the armor work they did for The Hobbit.

Derpy McBlueEyes 12-16-2017 03:42 PM

I do like Weave Got Maille for their enameled copper rings, but TRL is definitely my go to for everything else. And their customer service is fantastic too! I had an order go "missing" (it somehow had not gotten shipped) and so they resent it plus gave me a code for free rush processing on the next order.

Den 12-16-2017 06:52 PM

After I get the second wrist warmer done, if I have enough yarn left over, I'll make a pair without bobbles.

Mekatra 12-16-2017 06:58 PM

I hardly ever work with enameled copper anymore. Only when I need white rings, to be honest. The anodized aluminum is just too nice. Lasts longer, it's light, and cheaper even... I can't argue with it.

Speaking of, I finished my gift for the dirty santa exchange at my work Christmas party tonight.

Den 12-16-2017 07:04 PM

It took me a bit to "see" how the rings go. verreh nice

Derpy McBlueEyes 12-16-2017 07:34 PM

Is that a helm's chain? Beautiful! I struggle a little with helms chain still, but I think I haven't been using good ring sizes for it.

I have found colors in the enameled copper that I haven't found in anodized aluminum currently, which is my main reason to use it. TRL is getting good with adding new colors though.

Den 12-17-2017 01:55 AM

I finished the second bobble wrist warmer! I still need to make leaves for the bobbles so they're not just random red balls on the wrist warmers, but that can wait until midweek.

Mekatra 12-17-2017 02:00 AM

Yeah, Helm's doesn't work well if you don't have ring sizes that work well together. It was the first weave I learned so it's always been a favorite.

Actually the last of the "basic" weaves I learned was European 4 in 1. Everyone always says it's so easy, but it's hella unstable until you get a couple rows in, so no, it's really not. Byzantine or Box maille is actually an easier starter weave... or Persian. Basically anything that isn't Euro 4 in 1 lol.

My obsession lately has been the square wire rings. They're so pretty. A bit of a bugger to work with, but so fun.

I'm still envious of you string workers. I just can't...

Den 12-17-2017 02:05 AM

The envy is mutual, Mekatra.

Mekatra 12-17-2017 02:07 AM

I can teach someone how to chainmaille. It isn't actually that complex, it just is tedious. >.<

Crocheting and Knitting and complicated.

Den 12-17-2017 02:09 AM

I'm not sure if I could teach someone to knit. At least, not over the internet. It's one of those things where I would want to be there in person to guide hands to get the movements down... there are a crapton of youtube videos on the matter though.

Mekatra 12-17-2017 02:13 AM

I am unteachable, not because I can't get the motions down.. but because I lose track of where I am. I don't have the attention span to count all my stitches.

Den 12-17-2017 02:15 AM

I have that problem sometimes. usually, I lose track of what row I'm on.

trystan830 12-17-2017 02:17 AM

i teach crochet, and there are people who get the hang of it right away; and some people who don't. everyone learns differently. =)
