Is there a polite way to decline hugs in real life? It seems the person who doesn't want them is seen as the rude one, but they're not trying to invade other people's personal space.

you're assuming people care about your feelings
actually the best way is to extend your arm quickly as to give a handshake when someone comes over to a hug
if the person still wants to hug, ignoring your handshake hand, then you gotta dance a little and already shake the person's hand

I'd probably unintentionally miss their hand and grab something else.
