@ Ren: Anyone North of the Mason Dixon line is called a Yankee, because they are of the Grand Old Republic, the region who went to war with the Southern States. It's just a regional term.

If you want to be very technical, "Yank" means "American" to the English, Welsh, Scottish, and Irish. And some Canadians I think.
