Because your art is awesomeness and some people are willing to pay real money for awesomeness arts? Even on avvie sites, especially if you will offer also some aurum art to first draw them in. ;D I have seen an artist get lot of money by doing OCs as commisions, but also having avvie art shop.

xD Well I wasn't planning on opening a shop here, considering I need more real life money than aurums. I actually have a hard time thinking pixel money could be worth art >.>

Well, there is also dA. You can make journal entry and such saying you're doing commisions, submit some artwork so people look at you and get commisions from there (and in artshop here, you can do only one or two artworks for high prices at a time, but just as that someone can peak in).
