Hey everyone, what's up?

you know, I don't quite remember where I came across The Weepies! XD I think it might have been one of those bands where iTunes said to me, "hey, since you have this music, you might like these guys too."
of course, that marketing technique doesn't work on me because once I listen to samples of the music, I go and borrow the CD from the library and put it on my computer for FREEEE. <3
World Spins Madly On is one of my two most favoritest Weepies songs. The other, Riga Girls, doesn't have an official video, but the song is really great. you must listen.
a band that I think is a lot like The Weepies but leans slightly more towards indie pop and less towards folk is Stars. I bet you'd like them too.

There are a lot more great folksy artists out there. these are just a few of the ones that I like, and they all have a lot of really fantastic songs other than the ones I posted. if you feel compelled to explore even more, I would look though the last.fm listing of top indie folk artists. last.fm is a genius when it comes to music. it knows what I like, and it's magic.

I never use last.fm to actually listen to my music, I just use the scrobbler in conjunction with iTunes to keep track of what I do listen to.

I love music a ton and could talk about it all day, so if you ever need recommendations, I'd be happy to spill them out.

as an illustration of how great my desire to collect music is, for my birthday today, one of my friends gave me a flash drive with his entire iTunes library on it, "minus nonsensical music that I don't think you'd like." thing is, I like all different sorts, and I was upset that he didn't include things that I wanted that I know he has, like The Newsies soundtrack, musical score to Up, et cetera. but the regular-people music he gave me was nice too. (I already owned about half of it, lawl.)

for my last post with all the links and crap, I got over 50 aurum. 50.23 or something? I thought that was pretty neat, since it's really hard to get over 45 and you pretty much never-ever see over 50. x3

Lucid, I do believe we have a mutual desire. One can never have too much music, and my 1 Terabyte hard drive is beginning to reach it's limits, and iTunes would crash a supercomputer with my library index.

wow. :O I am impressed with your collection. I just barely hit 20 days. XD I would probably have more if I used torrents, but I fear for my computer's health.

I'm into lots of different music, but mostly indie-alternative rockish stuff with indie and folk pop thrown in as well. plus techno. I listen to so much stuff that's similar to one another yet different in their own ways, I don't really know what genres to throw out anymore.
I guess the easiest way is through my last.fm charts
accurate over the course of a year, minus a 3-month period where my computer was broken so I couldn't scrobble, nor could I collect anything new. it was a depressing 3 months. :C

Glad to hear it. Most people think I'm insane because of it. xD

I've used a few torrents, I admit, but I got the vast majority of my music through filehosting sites like Mediafire and Rapidshare. I don't have to worry about any viruses because I use Liunx. ^_^

And I see a lot of familiar bands on that list. Especially Arcade Fire, The Kooks, The Beatles, The Killers, MGMT, Arctic Monkeys... okay, I could literally go on for days about the bands I like. Also I'm listening to The Decemberists right now. xD

For me... the short answer is I'm into almost anything, with the exception of most Country and Bluegrass and certain Hip-Hop artists. By everything though, I mean everything. That includes obscure genres that few people know about such as No Wave, Post Rock, Slowcore, Psychobilly, Stoner Rock, and extremely experimental bands that defy genres of any kind like Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band With Choir.

I grew up on The Beatles, Phish, The Beach Boys, R.E.M., U2, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and plenty of others that my parents listened to. When I entered junior high and especially in high school, I listened to Metal, and nothing else. I feel like that was a phase that I grew out of though. These days I mainly listen Indie Rock and Post Rock of all kinds, with a fair amount of Folk Rock, Jazz, and Electronica.

My favorite songwriter though is definitely Bob Dylan, and my favorite band for the past few years has been The Album Leaf.

:O if Florence + The Machine isn't on your list of recognized artists, you need to go listen to her right away. I lovelovelove Florence.

I'd like to use Linux, but I don't know if I could handle it. if I had a second computer (I used to but then accidentally fried the motherboard...) then I would put linux on it and have the best of both operating systems.
but what I'd really like is to get on something like what.cd, which is this crazy super-secret music torrent site that has a million rules, so I would consider those downloads safe and virus/porn free. one of my friends is a member, so whenever I get to see him I always steal his music.

I'm not listening to anything right now because my roommate is asleep (and I probably should be too). but I have Sufjan Stevens stuck in my head because I just found out he's going to be in Salt Lake in a couple weeks. but of course, like always, I'm too poor to go to concerts and have no transportation. but I'm okay with that for now.

I also went through a metal phase in junior high, but I grew out of it when I was around 15 or 16ish. I also listened to a lot of punk rock during that time, though, which I think helped me phase out of it. I grew from punk to alternative to indie and met some friends who were really into music, and my tastes grew and refined.

I don't really have a "favorite" because a lot of times my current favorite is just whatever fits my mood. I've been listening to a lot of folk right now but I'm sure within the next couple weeks I'll be hooked on electronic or broadway soundtracks or something. XD

Augh....Enough of studying. I just fell asleep at my desk. Half an hour ago, I fell asleep standing up if front of my sink.

I've actually never heard of Florence + The Machine. I'll have to look them up.

The cool thing about Linux is that it comes on a Live CD, so you can test it out on your computer and make sure it's right for you before you even install it. You should also be able to shrink the partition you have your main operating system on and install Linux on a new partition with the opened free space. From there you can use GRUB to dual boot between both OSes on the same computer. And believe me... it's easier than it sounds. I dual booted before I decided I didn't need Windows anymore.

I would like to use torrents more often, honestly, but the problem I have isn't viruses, it's seeders. Most torrents of music that I actually want either don't exist, or are so old and/or don't have any active seeders. I use filestube.com for my music and it's great at finding the bands I'm looking for. xD

I haven't heard of Sufjan Stevens either. I'll add them to my list and I'll check then out first thing I can tomorrow after I'm done with my classes.

And I totally know how that is. Up until I went off to college I was completely cut off from going to any concerts. I haven't really been to any latley though because I'm low on money as well. xD

Same here! My tastes change like the wind, but no matter where they go they always fall back onto The Album Leaf. They're er... him... Jimmy LaValle is just amazing. If you haven't heard of them I seriously suggest you check them out. The Album Leaf were... well, my gateway drug into Post Rock, as well as the major reason for my rehabilitation out of being a total metalhead. They have a really distinct Indie sound too, especially on their newest album, but for the most part they're Post Rock and their instrumental songs by far outnumber the ones with lyrics. Also, they consist of half of my username. xD

so, what do you know, I looked through my unorganized mess of music, and found out that I actually do have two CDs by The Album Leaf. In a Safe Place, and Into The Blue Again. I just haven't paid much attention to it, since it's one of those bands I probably just stole from my friend at random. I'm listening right now and like what I hear so far.

I looked into getting linux onto my sister's frankencomputer, since it needs a new OS. (it's running on my old hard drive, and my windows 7 beta expired ages ago >.>) but her flash drive wasn't big enough to hold the entire linux download. I think it got everything except the ability to boot up the system. XDDD I just got a new flash drive though so I'll try it out on my computer and see how it goes.

I think you'd like what.cd; my friend says it has "literally every song ever created." but if your system works well for you, then that's great. **runs to filestube to check it out**

You know, that's the same way I discovered them, actually. And I'd say those are their two best albums, well, those two and their newest one, "A Chorus Of Storytellers". "Eastern Glow" and "Always For You" would have to be my favorite songs on there.

I've also been really into Whitley, Sea Wolf, and Joseph Arthur latley. Have you heard of any of them, by chance? :3

And hold on... what linux distribution did you try? Most of them would fit on a flash drive... but I guess it depends on the drive. There's one called Puppy Linux that's designed to be installed on a flash drive so you can boot into it on any computer you plug it into. xD

I should check out what.cd has to offer then. And yeah, filestube is basically google for files, but it works really well. Out of the several thousands of albums I've downloaded using it, I can only name a handful of albums that I wasn't able to find on it. The polar opposite of that is true for torrents, but I've only been using ThePirateBay and Google for that so...

And yes! Music means big posts when I'm involved.

what.cd might be hard to scope out, to be honest, because the site doesn't even let you in without being a member. apparently there was a site like it before but it got found out and closed down. so it keeps real secretive-like now. the only reason I know anything about it is because my friend got an invite to join. you might be able to poke around the internet and see if people have invites to give away, but from what I hear, it's hard to get in. >.<

I tried downloading something off what filestube gave me, but it didn't like me very much. it said I had exceeded my amount of free downloads on my IP address or something. DX but that could just be the site that it led me to.

I have some stuff by Joseph Arthur, but I haven't heard of Whitley or Sea Wolf.

Well 2gb should be enough, most Linux distros are easily able to fit on an actual CD, so the 2gb shouldn't be a problem. The only distro I know of that would be too big for a flash drive would be OpenSUSE. Personally I'd recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

And I can see that. I tried going to the site but there was no way in other than the "Login" button. It's a little hard to believe that it houses every song ever made when it restricts it's userbase like that. I'll take your word for it, though. xD

Filestube is just a search engine. What it does is take you to multiple filehosting sites. Pretty much all of those sites have download limits, so you can only download one album at a time, and you have to wait 15 or so minutes between each download. One of the hosting sites disregards all that, though: mediafire. It's awesome because it doesn't limit your speed and you can download as many files at once as you want. The limits don't matter to me too much though, because there's a LOT of different sites so I can jump between them really easily to download the albums I want, especially if I find it on mediafire.

I downloaded a few of his albums the other day. Really like his stuff. Whitley and Sea Wolf are both Indie Folk and two of my favorites in the genre. Whitley I discovered by hearing one of his songs on the second-to-last episode of FlashForward. Sea Wolf was the opening act for The Album Leaf when I saw them live last year, and they were amazing. ^_^

I'll look closer into the filehosting sites then. I just got confused when I got there for the first time ever and it said, "nope, you've downloaded already, you have to wait."

I think Ubuntu was the one I was trying to download, actually. it needed 2gb of space on the flash drive, and the flash drive was precisely 2gb. but since the drive had a portion of its space reserved for its formatting or something, it was barely not enough. I think I'll try it on my 8gb flash drive today, though, and see how I like it. C:

Yeah, it can be confusing at first, but really awesome once you get into it. It says the name of the filehosting site right under the link in orange lettering, so that should help. IMO the two best ones would be mediafire and 4shared, but if you're looking for more obscure stuff your options will be limited, in that case you basically take what you can get. xD

As for Ubuntu, yeah, okay. I looked more into the flash drive thing. If you have a spare CD to burn its easier to do it that way, and needs less space, but if you're gonna make a USB version of the Live CD it needs exactly 2GB. Let me know if you like it. ^_^

Also, I've been listening to Florence And The Machine, as well as Sufjan Stevens. I really like Florence, so thanks for that. Sufjan sounds good too, and if you like him then I think you'd like Whitley. They have a pretty similar sound.
