yaay Kaderin!

i'm almost done my current book too

Kaderin Triste 02-24-2020 12:44 PM

You're always almost done with a book!
8P

Lol

Yeah....only a lot more to go to finish my books! Though I recently discovered that one of my books is actually one of those big books that actually had multiple books from a series in it. So if I count those separately instead of as the full tome, I'm almost done with another book too. XD

trystan830 02-24-2020 12:48 PM

not when i just start a book, i'm not almost done with it! XD

but that's a fun discovery too!

Kaderin Triste 02-25-2020 06:33 PM

Finished a book last night! Time to work on knocking another out! Thought I might work my way through Frankenstein next, but omg it is so dry. For me anyway.

trystan830 02-25-2020 06:58 PM

woohoo!!

i do want to read Frankenstein, at some point. Mary Shelley and i share a birthday!

Kaderin Triste 02-25-2020 08:03 PM

I think I find it so hard to get through because I tend to read more modern novels, so the writing styles and even the English are vastly different compared to today's so I find the stories harder to I guess find relatable?
Or I just am a plebeian who has no respect for the classics. Idk.
XD

Also, I can only ever remember one famous
...being(?) who I share a birthday with: Garfield the cat. We're exactly 10 years apart.

trystan830 02-25-2020 08:05 PM

lol? i've read Lovecraft. that takes some patience and deciphering to make out what he's actually just told you, so...i'm hoping i can read Shelley.

Kaderin Triste 02-25-2020 08:21 PM

You'll probably be just fine with Shelley. Having the Hollywood versions of Frankenstein/Frankenstein's monster, the book much more subtle in comparison. The big, dramatic reveal is...not really so big. Or dramatic. In fact, it was almost a letdown.

Lovecraft was racist and classist so that was a thing to navigate, and liked his exposition and complicate words (always the same ones, it would seem) but Shelley shouldn't be an issue. I love Frankenstein and it's a very easy read compared to the other Romantic writers at the time. Here's a heads up: it's suspected the prologue or intro (not sure what it was) was written by Percy, so if that looks dreadful, that's why. Mary's writing is much smoother, so skip that first bit if you need to.

trystan830 02-26-2020 12:14 AM

Mary and Percy (i know them that well, huh?) were just in an episode of Doctor Who the other week! :D

how's this for HPL being racist - he made up his own race to be racist against too! o_O

Yeah? The names or the people? Cool. I watched a few Dr. Who episodes to get a feel for it, then everything was randomly wiped from my PVR and I am irritated. All I have left is the new doctor's appearance episode.

HPL made up several races. Which one would this be?

trystan830 02-26-2020 12:39 AM

the people. i've watched all the Doctor Who there is to watch, and even some of the older episodes that all they had was the audio. some they used production stills for, some they animated the parts. it's very cool.

well, the Fishmen, for starters. it's also been quite some time since i've read any HPL, actually.

Quiet Man Cometh 02-26-2020 01:02 AM

Ah. I think the fishmen count more as monstrosities as they are fish-human hybrids without a mention of an actual ethnicity. Cultists, creepy people, uneducated masses etc, all tend to be non-white, or white but really poor.

trystan830 02-26-2020 01:03 AM

ah, that's true. like i said, it's been a while since i've actually read his stuff

daikokunyo 02-26-2020 05:31 AM

now that exams are almost over, i want to continue reading for fun again! will start with fanfiction, probably. i have a bunch i've got downloaded to read.
