I'm so jealous of you guys, all the good places I don't know how to get to so I'm stuck with the one I hit on the way to work and on the way home since I can pull over right next to it.

Lawtan 08-03-2016 06:24 PM

Mankey!

...I know that isn't the best, but it and Pincer have been in the vicinity for weeks (3 steps when that thing used to work), and I haven't been able to find it.

Same! Though my odds are really low given that I don't actually play. ;)

My niece snagged a Vulpix at our Pokemonless farm by putting out some incense.

Is it possible to play the game with only a few Pokemon or cherry picking what you want? How do you level? I assume that level has to do with what is available to catch and what not.

Maybe I should just crack out the game again. ;)

Coda 08-03-2016 07:11 PM

Mankey's actually fairly good -- Primeape is a lot better in Go than it is in the main-series games (it gets Cross Chop, which is *the* best charge move in the game right now) and while it's not exceptionally powerful it's still pretty strong relative to how easy it is to evolve and level up.

Awen Moonshine 08-03-2016 07:53 PM

You level up your trainer by catching, hatching and evolving pokemon ^_^ To begin with it's fairly easy but I'm now struggling to level up (level 22 requires 100k exp to get to level 23)... You also can get bonus exp from how well you throw the pokeball and from tagging pokestops ^_^

I've been lucky that I am able to play a lot and have manged to spend time in environments that aid playing with multiple pokestops and gyms, otherwise I'd probably not be very far into the game at all.

Coda 08-03-2016 08:54 PM

The curve is set up to make it fairly easy to get to 10 or so, then it takes concentrated effort to get to 20, and getting to 30 is kinda hard, and then getting from 30 to 33 takes as much XP as it took to get from 1 to 30. It's MEANT to slow way down as you progress as a way to level the playing field.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-04-2016 04:23 AM

So could one do a "catch and release" sort of thing?

I seem to be something of an Instinct leaner (though if I were to pick something off the bat I'd probably be Mystic because blue). I care more about the pet part of the game more than the battle aspect. People seem to get emotional about the various teams.

Perhaps I should just go and look this stuff up properly.

Demonskid 08-04-2016 06:01 AM

Basically what you do is catch as many of the same types of pokemon possible. Keep the highest CP pokemon, and send the others to the professor in exchange for that pokemon's Candy so you can level it up and evolve it.

Some people also catch cheaply evolvable pokemon like pidgey and rattata, put a lucky egg on and mass evolve the pokemon for faster trainer leveling. (Get the candy you need first)

hope i helped ovo

RinLin 08-04-2016 10:27 AM

Kay, no reply for me. Good. I got the program working, but it managed to freeze my computer.

SparX 08-04-2016 11:23 AM

I got a vulpix this morning, and then finally evolved an eevee into something other then vaporeon XD
I got a jolteon.

ml1201 08-04-2016 03:07 PM

@Rin
As far as I know DK wouldn't be able to answer anyways, she only knows about the ones for the cellphone, not the computer.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-04-2016 11:47 PM

...I got the game. I can state that there are currently no Pokemon in this house or the back yard. My niece and I were going to stroll down to the gym and local Pokestops but I had adulting to do. Alas.

My little Bulbasaur seems pretty darn pathetic from what I know about the game. It remains to be seen if he will be a worthy successor to my original.

Coda 08-05-2016 12:38 AM

The starters aren't very good in Go mostly because they're so rare that they're exceedingly difficult to level up. :(

ml1201 08-05-2016 12:52 AM

I was lucky to have a Bulbasuar with a little more than 400 CP. ^^;

RinLin 08-05-2016 06:03 AM

Kay, I must have missed it then.

RinLin 08-05-2016 06:05 AM

And I am using a different account for the BlueStacks one. I am not stupid.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-06-2016 01:31 AM

I have four Pokemon now! Wee!

Went for a walk to the nearest Pokestop and Gym but found nothing on the way. Had to drive out of town and parked on three of the things when I stopped for Gas. Got a rat and pidge(the spearow took off. Later got a boy Nidoran that I had no idea was around when I was in my cousin's tree house.

I called him Ed!

PartySkeleton 08-06-2016 10:49 AM

Pokemon Go is great, I started playing the minute it was released in the US. I'm level 19 and my best pokemon is a CP 1500 Gyrados...

Poggio 08-06-2016 01:56 PM

Since they made me upgrade my app I am actually having more trouble finding pokemon. It used to be that I could glitch my way into a rare pokemon. By that I mean I happen to be walking, nothing on my radar and bam I am in a fight with a magmar or a scyther. But now I can't u.u.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-06-2016 07:17 PM

I've found I've caught more Pokemon just from having my phone sit somewhere while I'm doing something rather than actually walking. I stumbled onto a CP 25 Zubat while walking to the nearby strip mall, but everyone else was just me being casual. I caught another Nidoran (CP32) while brushing my teeth, a zubat while cooking dinner, a ghastly while writing in my journal before bed, and a caterpie while typing this post.

My best pokemon so far (I'm level 3) is my cp75 Eevee I got while sitting at my computer earlier today.

So far, everyone I have is CP 10 except for the Eevee, the Nidoran and Zubat mentioned above, and my CP 14 Caterpie and Bulbasaur. Not sure what approach I should take to powering up these guys. There are eevee in the area and I want more but not sure I want to burn one of my two incense. I'm going to stroll down to the nearby pokestop again later and see what I can get. I've certainly been walking more in the past two days than my normal house pacing.

ml1201 08-06-2016 10:44 PM

@Poggio
I think they made changes to prevent that from happening and also make it so that certain places don't come up for you anymore if you frequent it a lot. Like if you can get a stop several times in one day because of work or something, and by several times I mean probably more than 25 times. So if you were in an area where you were constantly getting something rare it might have now made it so that you can't.

@Rin
No one said you were stupid? Though I am wondering why you would be using it when you said before you didn't want to play a game that requires you to sit around? Unless Bluestacks does more than mess with the GPS reader? I'm clueless about the program, but from what Coda said it sounds like its usually used for the GPS thing...

Lawtan 08-06-2016 10:49 PM

Don't burn the incense yet. Save that for if you "go Pokemon Go-ing" in an area certain for a lot of pokemon, like a downtown city or park with a ton of landmarks, and walking around for 20 minutes.
And that's normal for level 3 - you get 10-100 up till level 5, then it's 10-500 till level (15, I think..)...but you can feed them candy and magic pixie dust to increase their cp.

I was at the zoo yesterday...I want to get pictures together to share...caught a Pincer and Nidorina. :)

ml1201 08-06-2016 10:52 PM

I'd wait on raising the CP though until rank 15 or see because the pokemon then have MUCH higher CP and it won't cost as much to raise, and you can save the candy for mass evolving. :3

Quiet Man Cometh 08-07-2016 12:13 AM

So should I hold off on powering up anything? I got a Venomoth at cp 131 a short while ago. I'm impatient a little to see how things go. Do I even want to keep all these cp 10 guys?

Watching my phone here. The gym in the distance has changed groups a couple of times, and someone put a lure down at the stop down the street. This annoys me a titch because I don't want to go walking down there again. I have stuff to do and it's getting dark.

Clefairy!!!

I'm beginning to think that Pokemon just get tossed randomly at inactive phones to make up for people perhaps not being able to move around as much. I can imagine kids in a closed ward or something at a hospital who only have so many rooms to hunt Pokemon in. It would make it fun for them.

Lawtan 08-07-2016 01:22 AM

I doubt it - otherwise, I'd be much further along.
It depends. Evolved pokemon stats are based on the cp a pokemon was when you caught it, so if you plan to evolve it, it will reset all your cp progress on that pokemon.

Quiet Man Cometh 08-07-2016 03:58 AM

Caught a Golbat. Not sure it was worth all the ball I lobbed at it (escaped three times and was irritatingly hard to hit) but I can collect more at the stop tomorrow, I guess. Longer walk for me. I may even be high enough level to hit the gym.

Are you sure about that one? I'm seeing it said both ways, and that whatever CP your Pokemon had as it's evo point (including power-ups) will be the same once it's evolved.

I don't have the candy to evolve so I'm deciding if I should wait it out, specifically for my Eevee.

Lawtan 08-07-2016 09:59 AM

I tried it twice, and one evolution was the exact same as its raised CP, and the other was lower than the CP I raised it to. (So, I think it is a tad random in relation to how much you improve it before evolution, or more reliant on the CP at capture.)

And yeah...I miss a lot. xD

PartySkeleton 08-07-2016 10:17 AM

I don't know if any of you know this but you can control which eeveelution you get when evolving an eevee. You have to name your eevee before evolving it and the names are:
Rainer: Vaporeon
Sparky: Jolteon
Pyro: Flareon
Hopefully this helps :)

Awen Moonshine 08-07-2016 11:32 AM

Also note that it only works once per name.

I've been rather lucky and have all 3 Eeveelutions that are all quite powerful. Now I'm just collecting Eevees for their candy to boost my Vaporeon as she was my first (through random choice) ^_^;;

I really want to be out in the nice weather searching for pokemon and tagging pokestops, but I have lots of work to do right now... :(

Lawtan 08-07-2016 12:50 PM

Same. ;~;

But, I can give photos!
...

...
30 minutes later (bad Wifi connection)

SparX 08-07-2016 12:52 PM

I was able to catch a squirtle and a bulbasaur at the college the other day. =3

Demonskid 08-07-2016 12:56 PM

Law - that magikarp is seriously lost o3o

Awen Moonshine 08-07-2016 01:13 PM

Awesome pics Law <3 I'm stuck inside sewing :( I did hatch a Magicarp though through my GPS bugging out and sending me for walks around the neighborhood ^_^;;

Quiet Man Cometh 08-07-2016 04:27 PM

I'm going to take a stroll to the pokestop, crummy weather or not. I lobbed some 20+ pokeballs at a golbat the other day and need more.

If you evolve an eevee without naming it, will it be random?

How do you make the camera take an actual picture? I tried it once but just got a regular game shot.

Here are some numbers for people (I told myself I wasn't going to get this involved!)

Just got a drowsy CP 134 with Psychic at 40 (3 bars). My CP 131 Venomoth has Psychic at 55 (two bars). I assume those are attack stats but not sure how they work. How would those two compare? (for people that are more on top of these things than me).

I think I'll walk to the gym in a few and train. Hopefully it won't become non-friendly by the time I get there. I needed this game after I got out of the hospital. I would probably have recovered faster!

Poggio 08-07-2016 05:46 PM

Sadly, my ever evolutions are random. I want a vaporion but got the others instead.

Lawtan 08-07-2016 05:54 PM

Name one Eevee "Rainer" and evolve it, and it should be a Vaporeon.

I switched to the actual camera app...

...Not sure how battle stats work. I'm still neutral at lvl 14. Team Harmony!

Quiet Man Cometh 08-07-2016 06:52 PM

Well that didn't go well. Friendly gym but the pokemon were to tough to train with. Would be nice if you got even a ball or something for the effort, but it looks as though if you aren't tough enough to win, there's little point in doing any gym/training stuff.

Did get another egg though.

Coda 08-07-2016 09:38 PM

Gyms are worth it if you can get through even one Pokemon; you get XP for it. But you probably don't want to try for gyms until you're level 10 or so.

Don't waste your stardust on powering up Pokemon until you're past level 15. As you level up, wild Pokemon will show up with higher CP, and odds are that you're just going to level up and get a new Pokemon with better stats than the one you spent stardust on.

In general, don't bother trying to catch evolved Pokemon right now unless it's something particularly rare that you need for Pokedex completion. With the capture rates being what they are, you're going to waste a lot of balls on them and they're not worth any more candy than the unevolved form. I mean, if you see a Ninetales and you can't even find a Vulpix, then heck yeah catch it, but that's the general idea.

Bluestacks is just an Android emulator. If you want to give it a moving, fake GPS location with the arrow keys, you have to install an app to control that and set it up, because the default configuration doesn't do it.
