Olivia frowned, her eyes tightening in concern. As of yet there hadn't been anything Saya hadn't discussed with her, and she had gotten confident in that. She knew, however, that everyone had things that they would rather remain private. Letting out a silent breath she decided to leave it alone. It was Saya's business after all, not her own.
Olivia examined Saya as he refused to look at her. His sudden distance, though only emotional, not physical, had her aching to reach out to him. She wanted to put her hand under his chin and move his face so they would stare eye to eye, or to hug him and banish whatever bad memories she had brought up. She felt her fingers twitch toward him; it was a hard temptation to resist. So, putting on her best smile, Olivia stood and patted his shoulder lightly, the only contact she would allow herself at the moment. Instead of responding to his plea for another topic she simply moved on as if the conversation had never happened and they hadn't missed a beat in their easy flow of talking. "Here, let me show you this, I made it in class today." She dug through her school bag and pulled out a thick sheet of paper. On the paper, in pencil, was what appeared to be dead trees. They're branches wove together to create the image of a girls face. She seemed to smile as if she kept a secret. "I'm thinking of turning this into a painting, what do you think?" |
"I think it'd make a great painting- but I think it's great as is too. I think my sister would like it too." Of course, as soon as his depression weaved away to the back of his mind, his sister complex returned to the front. "Then again, she'd probably start looking for the patterns in the strokes or something. That's sorta just how she is...But the idea behind the picture is more what interests me. What gave you the idea?"
Olivia came and sat next to Saya with the drawing and smiled. "I'm not really sure... The girl as a secret, one that make her happy, and one that she won't be spilling any time soon. She's hiding in the trees, protecting her secret. I just kind of thought of her and the rest came by itself." She told him as she examined the paper herself for a moment. "It still needs some work, but I like where it's going."
"The best part is it has a story. But is she upset? I'm trying to figure out why you used dying trees rather than lively healthy ones. There must be a symbolism behind that, right?" Sayaku smiled easily, thinking to himself. "Is it a dark secret that could ruin her life if others found out or something?"
Olivia nodded, suddenly seeming th picture in a knew light. It was almost as if she had taken her secret and given it to this girl. It was an amusing secret at times, but also one that could crumble at any moment. "It's sort of... mixed. As long as she keeps the secret things will be perfect. But if she tells anyone... then who knows. It would depend on who she told, I guess." She looked at Saya from the corner of her eye. What he do if he knew? If she suddenly told him the truth? Would he hate her for deceiving him?
"Maybe you should draw her a friend next that she can confide the secret in- maybe in the same setting, but with her and the other person? And maybe the trees can be more lively to show the change? I dunno. Not really my forte, making this stuff up, but it was the first idea that came to mind."
Olivia smiled at Saya's idea. It really wasn't that bad, though she decided she wouldn't draw it until she really found someone to confide in. Who that person would be, however, was a mystery. "No, it's good maybe I'll draw it sometime."
Olivia pulled a strand of her hair around her finger as if to twirl it around, but it was to short and slipped from her hand. She was still having trouble getting used to having her hair this short. She brushed it out of her face and glanced downward, spotting Saya's hands. "Ah, Saya, this might sound strange to ask, but could I borrow your hand for a moment? I'm having a bit of trouble with them so..." She trailed off, slightly embarrassed for some reason. It wasn't like she was asking to hold his hand or anything, this was strictly for artist purposes. |
"As long as you think it'll actually help, sure, I don't mind." He held a hand out curiously. He'd never been asked a question of that kind, and in general he wasn't sure if his hands would be of any use to art- but, if it would help, he'd accept such an ideal. "Y'know, I never noticed how tiny your hands are in comparison to mine. As I look now, it's actually sorta funny. Are my hands that abnormally large? Or are yours just strangely small?"
Olivia laughed, somehow not disturbed by his noticing the the size diffrence of their hands. She was sure he was much to trusting to think anything of it. "You're hands are normal, mine are just small." She assured him. Taking Saya's hand in both of hers, Olivia spread his fingers apart, feeling their roughness against her own smooth hands. Her fingers ran along the creases in his skin and traced the veins she could see. Then she gripped his hand a little more tightly, though not hard enough that it would hurt, and felt the bone beneath his skin. That was what she needed, having the basic anatomy of it would help. Though she took her time exploring his hand, enjoying the feel of his skin against her own. "I suppose I just... well, I'm kinda tiny for a guy, aren't I?"
"A little, but it's not the end of the world, am I right?" Sayaku grinned. "I'm short for a guy too- though the rest of me is apparently normal. Maybe it's from all the cattle herding. But I mean, my sister is much smaller than you still, so that's gotta stand for something...Well, maybe not. She's tiny enough in weight to be a kindergarten kid, and last I checked she's only a year younger than us."
Olivia's head snapped up from looking at Saya's hands, her own hands freezing in place. "She's only a year behind us? But she's so tiny" Olivia blinked, shocked, and then chuckled. "Well, looks can be deceiving, can't they?" She looked back down at Saya's hand and continued her movements. Her hands felt tiny in comparison to his, as if his could swallow hers whole. Something about that thought made her feel... strange inside. She felt safe in a way, having him here, sharing a room with her. Which was odd, considering he was male and she should feel like she was walking on hot coals by sharing a room with him.
Then an idea came to Olivia. Since she already had Saya's hand she decided she would show him something one of her sisters, who happened to be studying massage therapy, had taught her. She pressed her thumbs and fingers into relaxing points in his hands feeling the muscles loosen, become less tense. Then she let her hands gently massage his hand. |
Somehow, the relaxation exercise his hands were being shown made his face turn slightly red- it tickled to some extent, but at the same time it was firm enough not to. "Olive, how does doing that help you with your drawing? Somehow it seems more like you're worried about my touching my drumsticks again..." He laughed slightly, though it was a tad more awkward than usual. "Yeah, sis is pretty surprising that way. But... Don't tell her that part, kay? She's really self-conscious when it comes to her size and stuff."
Olivia smiled, catching the awkward tone in his voice and laugh. So her did realize she was a girl, if only a tiny but, on a subconscious level. Either that or he just felt awkward about the massage, but she preferred the first one. "It doesn't. This is something my sis taught me. She used to do it for me all the time when my hands would cramp up from drawing or painting. I figured it might help you too." She looked down as if focusing on the massage. When in reality she was trying to keep a grin from her face. This small victory made her want to test the boundaries more, but she knew that she shouldn't.
"I think my sister would find it much more useful then I do. My hands are all callused and stuff from farm work and various instrument lessons. Certain things aren't easily felt anymore I guess- though it does keep the muscles from cramping, that's true. I'm worried my sister might need this more. It seems like it helps promote blood flow more...She could use better circulation, I bet, considering how much extra blood she has." He laughed a bit, apparently no longer troubled by the scenario.
"Calluses don't really effect this. All that matters is if it feels good. If it does, it does it's job." She told as she neared the end of the massage. "I'd be happy to do her hands if you want. Or I could teach you to, if you think she'd be more comfortable with that." She finished out the hand massage with a gentle movements and slowly withdrew her hand. "Other hand?" She asked.
"Depends. Do you need to do both hands for your artwork?" He looked at his friend curiously. "At the moment, I think one hand is fine otherwise. I'd rather wait for now. I'm not exactly used to such things and it feels sorta awkward."
"Oh, right, sorry. I suppose I'm a little too used to those kinds of things," She said in a cheery voice as if she were not bothered. I truth she felt a sharp pang in her chest. Saya had said he felt awkward and Olivia was pretty sure that meant he didn't like her touching him. That, or he did like her touching him and that's what made it awkward, but she didn't want to hope for that.
She stood, got some paper and a pencil, and sat back down. Carefully she began sketching a hand a smile growing on her face with each pencil mark. "There... that's better." She said triumphantly. |
"Can I see when it's done? I wanna see what my own hand was able to help with." Sayaku grinned, meanwhile pulling out a piece of paper and starting to write something on it- this time a letter. "I almost forgot to write my parents. They may talk on the phone sometimes but they love letters 'cause of how old-fashioned they are. Mom used to wait at the mailbox each day for the mail."
Olivia pencil sketched roughly against the paper, and the familiar sound of pencil strokes make her feel at ease. "I like letters. I used to get some from Grammy- er Grandma - and they always spelled like her house. Clove and nutmeg." She smiled at the memory. Then she examined her rough sketch. It was Saya's hand, though originally she had just wanted to use his hand as a reference. The fingers were spread as if reaching for something, the muscles of his hand and what could be seen of his arm were clearly displayed. Olivia grinned. "I've been trying to get that pose right for the longest time." She turned the paper so Saya could see more clearly.
"Looks like you've been drawing this for a good amount of time. It's really well done." Curiously, he looked at his own hand and splayed his fingers much like those in the drawing. "Jeez, it's practically identical... I don't know if that should make me happy or nervous. Eh, happy for you makes more sense." he chuckled a bit, smiling. "Ah, really? Gram lived in our house when she was alive so we never really had a different smell. Our house always smells of the coal oven and fresh plants of various kind, which is normal for a farmhouse. Uncle's house smelled of herbs thanks to sis, though...Usually in a bad mix."
Olivia laughed. "Nervous? Why would it make you be nervous?" She looked at Saya curiously. "Yeah, you helped a lot. Thank you."
((tiny post is tiny hehe ^^; )) |
"Because it'd make me wonder if somehow I secretly came out of the picture rather than the opposite." He grinned, laughing clearly. "Sorry. Actually I only thought of the word nervous because I was having trouble thinking of the right word."
"Well, I don't think I'm creative enough to make someone like you, so I think you're safe." Olivia said with a laugh. She smiled and set the drawing down. Leaning back, she raised her hands over her head and stretched. The ends of her shirt came up just above her stomach, showing a sliver of smooth skin. She made a satisfied noise. "I think I'll got take a shower now."
Sayaku had noticed the sliver of skin, which somehow left him in a curious state he couldn't explain. However, he paid no heed to it, isntead looking up at the bed above him to trace some of the lines in the wood again. "Go ahead. I'll go in after you. Don't stay in too long or you'll get dizzy, though."
Olivia laughed and rolled her eyes. "Don't worry, I'll get out the moment I notice any dizziness." She promised him, giving him a sideways glance. She reached over and playfully ruffled his hair before grabbing her things and entering the bathroom.
She let out a breath, her checks flushing a little. Her getting dizzy and passing out would be a very bad thing, considering the only one who could help her out was very male. She stepped into the shower and let the warm water calm her as was becoming her habit. She finished up quickly, dressed and came back out into the room. "Saya, I'm done." She said quietly, just in case he had fallen asleep. |
"Welcome back," He responded swiftly. His hand sat scribbling easily on a piece of paper, eyes glued to the words he was writing. "Hope you enjoyed the shower. I guess it's my turn now." He was careful to put the letter to his parents on the bed, taking what he needed from around him before walking over to the bathroom door. "I'll try to be quiet in case you're asleep when I get out."
Olivia nodded and went to her bed as Saya went to shower. She put her stuff away and pulled herself onto her bed. Laying her head back on the pillow, she stared up at the ceiling. How much longer could she keep her facade going? Saya would find out eventually, wouldn't he? She turned over, burying her face into her pillow. She had known that keeping her secret was a part of attending this so why did it bother her now.
Olivia flipped over again and covered herself with blankets, snuggling into their warmth. She didn't want to think about that now. She just wanted to sleep. So she closed her eyes and drifted off. Her face went slack, appearing peaceful and childlike as she slept. |
Sayaku had used his own shampoo again, surprised that the smell wasn't quite as putrid as he remembered. Having washed thoroughly of the limited dirt on his skin compared to his past, he changed into simple clothes for bed and exited the bathroom. He looked towards the upper bunk, seeing ever so slightly his roommate. Whispering words for pleasant dreams, he tucked himself into his own bed, half exposed from the covers to the air of the night, and forced his mind into silence to sleep. When morning came, he was already awake, as if he'd been awake for long hours.
Olivia's internal clock woke her as morning arrived, though only barely. She made a sound of displeasure as sunlight hit her eyes and rolled over in her bed. Stretching she tried to become more comfortable. Her arm stretched over to the edge make her hand hang just off the bed. She mumbled something about needing more beauty sleep and buried her head in her pillow, unaware Saya was awake.
Sayaku had, of course, heard his friend's mumbling of 'beauty sleep'. "Don't be such a girl 'bout it. Wake up so we can get breakfast." He was of course teasing, which was clear from his swift laughter from his own words. "Really, you're fine the way you are, Olive. It's better to embrace the day then push it off 'til later."
Olivia cracked an eyelid when she heard her friends voice. "I'm not too sure about that. Personally, I like early noon as my morning." She told him in a sleepy voice. She smiled slightly and closed her eyes again letting out a sigh. She didn't particularly feel like getting up. She rolled over on to her back, trying to think of a good reason to lay in bed longer when an idea came to her head. It was stupid, and she knew it was something she shouldn't do, but she was still not fully awake and thinking correctly. "If you want me out of this bed, you'll have to take me out yourself, cause moving isn't in my imediant future." She mumbled playfully, snuggling into the covers.
"Fine, guess I'll just have to go without you. Unless you want me to care about your grades since you're not interested right now. You do know how much participation is part of our grades, right? If you don't wake up soon, you'll have trouble."
Olivia laughed, now more awake. "Okay, okay, I guess grades are kind of important." She agreed and slowly got out of bed. She gabbed her things and made her way to the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. She completed her necessary preparations for the day, changed her cloths and exited the bathroom.
"Now that's more like it." Sayaku grinned when his friend came out, finishing up putting on his own shoes. "Only vampires should sleep through the morning, Olive. Or my sister, since she just sleeps almost all the time against her will. But she has a health reason. Last I checked, you're pretty darn healthy."
Olivia laughed and went to put on her own shoes. "Are you telling me you've never slept in till the afternoon and had it feel completely wonderful?" She asked him, then continued with a grin. "And what if I told you I was a vampire?" She finished trying her shoes and stood.
"Wouldn't believe you, considering you're fine in sunlight. That and I don't believe in vampires..." Shaking it off, he looked at his friend with a very serious expression. "I grew up on a farm. You really think I slept in when I had to help take care of the livestock? As soon as the rooster crows at sunrise I wake up. I've been auto-programmed thanks to growing up on a farm. I hate sleeping in 'cause of that. Even if I wake up in a daze, I do love to wake up early."
Olivia shook her head as if Saya's lack of sleeping in was a tragedy. "I can't even imagine that. I had a hard enough time waking up to my alarm back home." She laughed and patted his shoulder. "C'mon farm boy, breakfast awaits." She walked to the door and twisted the door handle.
Sayaku followed in a nonchalant manner. "I don't see why you make it sound as if I should be pitied. I like waking up. The air is always freshest first thing, after all, and you can get more done. Even if I'm half asleep during the day I can get things done. I love it."
((May I bring in the sister to be annoying? 8D)) |
((Of course! Annoying sisters are welcome here ^^))
Olivia laughed as they walked. "I can't really even function when I'm only half awake. I do odd things like poor cereal and milk into a hat. I really did do that once, and I tried to take it to school with me too." She grinned and looked over at Saya. Their different lifestyles amused her. |
((...Interesting thing they did for April 1st...))
"I didn't go to school back when I was younger. I started later on in middle school, so I was always pretty far behind. But I was a bookworm anyway, so I didn't really mind much." He laughed a bit. "I woke up at dawn when I first started going to school just to read earlier text books so I knew what I missed. Well, math was my sister's stuff so I just had her help me. But..." "Saya really stinks at math, actually." Flutter noted, walking up behind them. Sayaku jumped from the sudden voice, grumbling. "How many times do I have to tell you not to sneak up on me, Flute?" "Probably the same amount as I have to tell you not to call me that." Giggling, Flutter smiled to her brother and his friend. "Good morning, sir." She noted, smiling to Oliver. "I hope big brother isn't causing trouble." "He's the one causing trouble by not waking up on time..." Sayaku grumbled again, only to hear his sister scoff. "You just wake up too early, big brother." |
