Well unfortunately we don't have that here in public schools.

Lucid: 07-14-2011 09:23 PM

Those specific houses have everything to do with being a wizard though. it's like, "If I went to Hogwarts, what would my life be like? What house would I be in? What classes would I take? Which teachers would be my favorite? Which characters would I be friends with?" The house thing is just a part of the dream, but it does have a pretty big effect on Hogwarts social culture. It's not that we're like, "Oh hey, look, HOUSES! That's so bizzare, let's make a huge deal out of it!" It's really more like, "Oh hey, HOGWARTS! I wish I was a wizard going to Hogwarts, and I would want my life to be this certain way."

In "American" public school.

I went to public school.. It has nothing to do with public vs private. It's the fact that your school system is entire different.

And THAT is one of my pet peeves. When people say "public school" like that's what makes it different. PSSH. please.

and hmm that quite interesting.. but I never see -anyone- talk about those other things. It's -always- the house thing. then they get all defensive and chanting...

Humans are quite....bizarre at times... I just don't understand it.

It's probably because I'm thinking from a creator's standpoint. I have my own characters who are going to go to school as well. And in that school...there will be houses. Because that's what I grew up on.. That's just what I know about school.

I don't think there's any school in this entire country that doesn't have house or school uniforms. And because it's so... normal to me... i can't comprehend the focus on it.

It's like if I watch something about American schools...and start thinking.. WOWW... I wonder what Locker Number I'd get if I went to this school... It's just........ strange.

-sigh- I hope I can understand one day...

Demo 07-14-2011 09:45 PM

Well its the same dang thing that everyone does when they don't have something. They fantasize about it and find it interesting.

Lucid: 07-14-2011 09:48 PM

the difference is that Hogwarts houses are completely different from locker numbers. they determine your entire social life and living conditions. also, since houses are determined by character traits, it's a very personal and defining piece of the world she wrote.
I suppose it's more similar to us on Trisphee, talking about, "If I lived in the Trisphee universe, what race would I be? Which planet would I live on?"

Duchess 07-14-2011 09:51 PM

I don't fantasize about having a locker and a locker number =/

And I have never had a locker in school...and you all have MANY school related movies, books and series that show your school with lockers and how important decorating your locker to fit your personal style is, how important your locker is in proximity to your friends/crushes/enemies as well as classes.

I've never had a locker. Most school here don't have lockers even though its a significant part of schools in the US... so... Why am I not interested in the possibility of having one?

Why is it that Gleeks or whatever they ares, dont sit down and squeal about what club they'd be in if they were part of that universe?

Why is it specifically the houses in Harry Potter...? People barely talk about the teachers when saying their fantasy. Unless its heavy roleplay.

So So odd....

Demo 07-14-2011 09:55 PM

It's because our generation has grown up with this story and it has become apart of our childhood. We wish that we were apart of that world. It's not something to think deeply about.

Ashy 07-14-2011 10:00 PM

over here we only have sporting houses, they mean nothing other than at the athletic/swimming carnivals :P

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:00 PM

I never had a locker in high school. it wasn't important to my school; you had to go ask the office to assign you one if you wanted one. I don't know how other schools did it though. **shrug**

the thing about Hogwarts is that it's magic. any kid goes to regular school. but going to Hogwarts is special and that's all part of the fantasy. the houses are also the only bits that stay the same. someone might not want to fantasize about the teachers and students because they come and go. but the houses remain the same forever.

and if you mean Gleeks as in fans of the show Glee, that's probably because the only club focused on in that show is the Glee club. if you don't like the Glee club, there's no reason to be watching the show.

Demo 07-14-2011 10:08 PM

Ultima 07-14-2011 10:09 PM

Ooh, you men look very dashing ^^ -hopes my bf will dress up-

Duchess 07-14-2011 10:11 PM

Yes part of the fantasy...the roleplaying.. nothing major to do with Harry Potter's ultimate journey itself.

I'm not disputing the importance of houses in any school life, magical or normal. I'm in disbelief over the sheer amount of importance placed on them..... when there's soo many other factors to consider in the Harry Potter universe.

It feels a bit...trivial. Outside of school events and specific school related things... it really doesn't have much to do with wizardry itself. The teachers and books are there for that.

Maybe... it comes from humans strong desire to feel a sense of belonging... to have a "Clique". If they shout out which house they're all for, they can have a following and people to relate too within the fandom.

because the HP fandom is so large... you need cliques within it too. Kinda like how in school, you see people naturally branching off into little cliques or nerds, jock, preps, whatever have yous.

It's nothing to do with Harry Potter itself...but rather... You want something to root for and be a part of.

That.. I think I understand, providing its the reason. That makes a lot of sense why it'd be a hot topic. People just love dividing and segregating themselves.

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:13 PM

I do think you're right about that. I don't like Harry Potter much as a character, so I don't focus a lot on the parts that are relevant to the plot of the book itself. but I do love the world and like to feel like I would fit into a part of it.

Demo 07-14-2011 10:13 PM

Duchess I do believe that we should drop the subject cause it is getting us nowhere at all.

Samuel 07-14-2011 10:13 PM

Demo: Yeah Dude! You look great as well :)

Ultima: Thank you :3
Man, I thought it would be silly of me to look for a date to the ball... but now I feel like a loser and left out :p

Demo 07-14-2011 10:15 PM

Sam we can just go to the ball Single. We don't need dates XD Were just cool like that.

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:16 PM

there's no shame in going single. you just get to dance with MORE people!

Suzerain of Sheol 07-14-2011 10:17 PM

You can join me hiding in the corner, Sam. That's where all the cool kids are. :p

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:18 PM

no, hiding is not an option! **drags Suze out to dance with me** 8D

Samuel 07-14-2011 10:19 PM

Haha Awesome! I feel better now. :D

It's good to know I am not the only single one out there :3
Oh and its even better to know that I am now officially a "Cool kid!" lol

Demo 07-14-2011 10:19 PM

I can't dance but I have no trouble going to the dance XD

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:21 PM

**pokes at Duchess**

and THAT'S why everyone's so obsessed over Hogwarts houses. They all think that the one they would want to be part of is the best. even if it's not real.

Samuel 07-14-2011 10:21 PM

Demo: Same here! I can't dance for my life... unless I am a really good dancer, but my shyness keeps my awesome moves hiden? IDK lol :p

Demo 07-14-2011 10:26 PM

I like doing the dances we did at the cosplay ball I went to. I think it was called set dancing. pretty fun.

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:28 PM

I wish I knew how to swing dance. *3*
I'm taking a social dance class this fall and I'm gonna learn a bunch of different styles and it's gonna be SO SUPER AWESOME. I love dancing.

Demo 07-14-2011 10:30 PM

That sounds like a ton of fun Lucid!!!

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:31 PM

I'm sure it will be! I don't know who the teacher is going to be though. I hear some are real strict and others are super awesome. I hope I get a good teacher!

Demo 07-14-2011 10:35 PM

Eh an uptight dance teacher is not a true dancer.

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:37 PM

no kidding. >.< but it's a college class so they teach anyway. my roommate was going to take the class this last spring, but dropped it because the teacher was awful.

Espy 07-14-2011 10:38 PM

I gotta leave in half an hour -sob- Anyways...if I come back after class and the event's not up.... -sniffle-

Lucid: 07-14-2011 10:39 PM

don't worry Espy, if it happens tonight I won't be here either. ;O; we can cry together.

Demo 07-14-2011 10:40 PM
