My sister has a book (printed from online) on Elvish. Apparently the little dots aren't decorative. They have to do with grammar, or vowels, or some such. Can't quite recall. She memorized Tolkien runes instead. ;)

You can learn it at the Oxford University here in Britain.

I prefer talking Dark Elven though.
Then again I can talk a lot of languages.

Oh man it would be cool to learn drow speak.

I assume that "Dark Elven" refers to the language of Mordor since we're talking Tolkien here (though correct me if I'm wrong). Drow as in "dark elf" (looking just like regular elves but with black skin and white hair) is a DnD concept, as far as I know. I know they exist in Norse myth but I'm not sure how much they resemble the typical Tolkien elf.

Not sure.. I own the Lord of the Rings but never read it..

As much fun as it would be to learn Elven or Drow, in sense, where would you really use those languages? Chances are, very few people will know that tongue, pretty much like Latin.. You have to learn that language if your wanting to sing most of the old songs.. or at least in Chorus, our teacher would spring a song on all in Latin on us.. but other than that.. I really don't see the point.. than Mom said the same about Gaelic.. than again, that is me. I rather learn a language I would use at some point than one to confuse the shit out of people through it would be fun to cuss someone out in elven and see them wondering what the hell was said.. XD

I use drow for the DnD concept and the Dark Elf.
To me drow can be either or.

And I'd learn it to speak it to myself.
Or to angrily speak it to others so they wouldn't know what I was saying.

On languages that are imaginary/dead - If you had friends, it would be like a code to hide what you are saying...

I worked at a movie theater with a girl who spoke Elvish. She swore up a storm when she spilled a container of liquid popcorn butter.

My sister is part Indian so she speaks Indian.. not India Indian, I mean Native American. It was quite funny when someone pissed her off, she would turn around and cuss them out in her native tongue..

I could of learned Gaelic and done the same myself. I lived in a kind of hick town so not many people of would of known Gaelic and probably would of just scratched their heads and wonder who spit in my cornflakes that morning..

And for the dead languages.. your friends would need to learn them as well.. so it's kind of pointless if only you learn the language and your friends don't. Than look at the old Egyptian language, they used symbols and some symbols actually meant more than one word/letter. XD I can see your friends loving having to decode that and be like, o . . o' wait.. which word/letter is that suppose to be.. and it's always the birds too.. -chuckles-

Rant on series of changes to make Faerun "darker" (Spoiler happy)

1) They killed off Eilistraee. She was essentially a "savior" to the drow - able to keep her worshipers from becoming the playthings of a Demon Lloth sacrificed the Drow race to. While her father - an elven god - took her worshipers in post-mortem, all future drow are cursed without the possibility of liberation from their fate. As such, good drow are now extinct, making "black elves always evil and soulless."
I realize that they were trying to make the world more grim, but I see that they just made things more black & white, and possibly a tad racially insensitive. By taking the souls from the drow, they took the soul out of dealing with drow post-Eilistraee.
2) They killed off Mystra, the goddess of magic, and thus made magic very hard/near impossible to maintain. This killed off many magical characters, leaving the remainder bitter and unwilling to help.
First, Faerun is a fantastical, magical place to explore and have adventures! You don't irreversibly destroy a core part of that - Magic!
Second, you killed the attraction of so many groups/characters post-Mystra.
3) You destroyed Neverwinter! I mean, first you keep a sympathetic character in the Tomb of the Betrayers after hanging him because his trusting nature let an enemy in by accident...after which you killed the man's lover who (surprise, surprise) went a little nuts after you forced her to watch her love hang for treason! And now you burn the Jewel of the North into ashes! Nope nope nope nope nope.
4) The murder of Eilistraee invoked no retaliation, and the murderer of Mystra got a "slap on the wrist" - Cyric, you killed magic. At the least creating such instability as killing a goddess of the fabric of the universe should have critically injured a him.

I understand the "we need to make the world darker" deal, but then have invasions that destroy towns, and sacrificial cults. As it is, they are just killing developed characters to kill them. That, and it seems like every world like this is doing the same exact thing, which rather than creating a greater challenge, is just killing my ability to like the characters (Mr. Freeze went from tragic romantic scientist to 2-bit necrophiliac...no!)

Rant over - my opinion on matters: Dark does not equal smart/mature
