Frozen

NON-SPOILER ALERT: I'm not going to spoil anything beyond the first 20 minutes of the movie or so.

The first thing I have to say about Frozen is that the promotional campaign SUCKED. The ads and trailers give you ABSOLUTELY no idea what the movie is actually ABOUT, make the movie seem shallow and mediocre, and could even be considered a bit misleading since they put the focus on things that actually prove to be fairly minor. (For example, Olaf the snowman is NOT a meaningless, shallow comic relief character; he's actually important to the plot, not annoying at all, and he sees character development through the course of the movie.) From the trailers alone you wouldn't even know the movie is a musical in the tradition of Beauty and the Beast rather than just having a couple musical numbers thrown in like Tangled did.

In fact, the movie is actually pretty deep, with some really surprising twists that toy with your expectations of cliches.

Since the ads don't actually TELL you what the movie is about... and in fact the only plot information I can find about the movie outside of the movie itself is http://movies.disney.com/frozen/story ... I'll give a bit more information.

Elsa and Anna are sisters, princesses of Arendelle. Elsa is the older sister, and heir to the throne; she was also born with ice magic that she struggles to keep under control. An accident claims the lives of their parents, and when Elsa comes of age she is crowned queen. The emotional stress on the day of coronation makes her lose control of her power and she flees the castle to seek solitude, but accidentally freezes the entire kingdom in the process. Anna sets out to find Elsa to get her help in restoring summer, and to bring her home.

By the way: The soundtrack is AMAZING.

WOAH. Ok Coda, I want to see it as well, but that's because I knew the story that Frozen was written from... But thanks for letting me know for sure that it was amazingly good.

Ashy 11-29-2013 08:09 PM

All ive seen of the movie is the promotional poster where its got australia frozen, id say the marketing team needs to be sacked on this one

Illusion 12-01-2013 01:51 AM

Just saw the movie, and it was fantastic. Best thing Disney made in a long time! The music was actually good, and catchy. Something that I actually will find myself singing in the future.
Olaf was adorable and funny as heck, the movie has a strong sense of warmth that Disney lost for a while. I'm completely satisfied with the movie, which is weird. I'm trying to think of one complaint but there was none.
If anything I would love to see a movie where Elsa becomes evil, sort of pull a Magnificent. You have to admit, Elsa would make a great villain if she was given the broken heart and loneliness to do so.

MINIMAL VAGUE SPOILERS:

I just saw it tonight and while it was less silly-cutesy-childish than I thought it was going to be from the trailers, .... it still was a bit too much for me.

And the singing! GOD I hate musicals .... I didn't know it was going to be, and I was disappointed every time a song started up x.x Though I must say, I had heard "Let it Go" before, and that is the only song I didn't mind in the movie. Much like Tangled's "At Last I see the Light" or whatever it's called. I just am very irked by songs that are like "I'm in my room, and I'm going to see my sister now. And I'm knocking on her door but she won't open it. And now I'm bored. And I'm sitting here in my castle. Lalala."

Basically, I'm okay with songs that could be used in ANY other context but the one it's in in the movie. But any narrative songs that could easily be left out and replaced with dialogue or just not exist at all, I just ... -siggghhhhh-

Ahem. But enough about that. I really liked the twist at how they save the day in the end. A much better and more original message than I thought they would go for.
The graphics were gorgeous, and Anna was such an adorkable, believable character. And I loved Elsa. I could have done without Olaf, but that's just me...

Coda 12-01-2013 11:54 PM

See, if the ad campaign hadn't sucked, you would have known it was a musical. :P

I wish I had D: I went with Ginny and a couple of our friends, but I haven't seen Jason in months... He's living with his grandparents right now because the school district screwed us over and he couldn't get any support for his disability here. I've talked to him on the phone and on Skype, and I've played Minecraft with him over the Internet, but I really miss him. :(

Nexess 12-02-2013 01:16 AM

D: Awwwe, I bet hee would love it!

Arikana 12-02-2013 12:23 PM

Damn, it sucks you haven't seen your son in ages but at least he's getting the support in school that he requires. :3

And now I want to watch Frozen even more now. *adds it to list of movies I wanna watch* @_@

Illusion 12-02-2013 03:15 PM

"Summer is a good time to play and cuddle,
put me in the summer and I'll be a...
-stares at a puddle-
HAPPY SNOWMAAAAN! :D"

Aaaah.. Olaf... xD

Coda 12-02-2013 11:46 PM

iTunes has a deluxe soundtrack with not only the full score but also a number of demo tracks, outtakes, and KARAOKE TRACKS. GOOD stuff.

Poggio 12-06-2013 10:43 PM

Damn when my friend and I went to see Epic we saw the trailer for Frozen and I thought that derpy snow man is not sucking me in. I was not a big fan of Tangled and seeing Frozen in the same animation style also played against it. When I heard it was going to be one of my favorite fairy tales but about sisters instead of Gerda and Kai I kinda decided then and there that it was not worth seeing. But after reading this thread I may give it a look. Especially if Disney finally found a musical artist that can match the caliber Howard Ashman.

Alpha 12-07-2013 12:06 AM

Seen a few videos from it along with this...definitely want to see it now.

Coda 12-07-2013 03:21 AM

Disney posted one of the musical numbers on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moSFlvxnbgk

This song is only like 20 minutes into the movie so it's not much in the way of spoilers. It made me shed tears in the theater just from the pure emotion and intensity of it.

Alpha 12-07-2013 03:36 AM

Yep. Saw that one. It's awesome!

Greenwood28 12-19-2013 01:13 AM

Frozen was so totally and completely cute. One of the best movies ever. I really enjoyed it very much and would love to see it again. Such a great movie.

Arikana 01-13-2014 04:12 PM

Saw this on the last day of 2013 and I LOVED IT. <3

I fell in love with Idina Menzel's voice all over again, plus a snowman. <3

Alpha 01-13-2014 05:35 PM

Finally saw this last week...and...and....it was awesome and adorable! SQUEEEE!

Ashy 01-16-2014 11:12 PM

Watched it today and i had to say considering the hype from you guys it was kinda blah for me. All except the first song felt kinda forced and it probably could have done without Olaf. I did however like the ending, though i did guess that she'd need to start feeling stuff if she wanted to control her powers. It was still pretty decent but could have been much better.

Coda 01-17-2014 12:05 AM

Ashy's a philistine. >.>

Nah, just messing with you. Not everyone appreciates musicals.

Ashy 01-17-2014 12:28 AM

i do appreciate musicals, but in this case i honestly think it would have been better without the songs

Fauxreal 01-19-2014 06:01 PM

I loooved it. Music and all!

found this for you guys

Lawtan 01-22-2014 05:10 AM

I admit I am partly in Ashy's court - I find Rise of the Guardians to be better. It wasn't the musical...it was because it was so much of a musical (and the instruments used in one of the songs just doesn't fit the atmosphere...and though they threw several good twists with the love in the plot (IMO) they needed more build up than the "wanna build a snowman" song to develop everyone more...

In short, I wish that the wasted hour in Hobbit was used to add 30 minutes to Frozen's beginnings to pace it better.

Rise of the Guardians 79/100
Frozen 68/100
Hobbit 2 46/100

...then again, my favorite childhood movies would score a 60/100, so...

Fauxreal 01-22-2014 02:47 PM

I just saw Rise of the Guardians! It was also quite good. <3 I love them both!

Karastorm 02-06-2015 02:42 PM

Coming from a musical theater performing arts stance. Frozen is an amazing film. Coming from a adult wit out kids I can see how it gets annoying. The message is pretty darn epic though. ( won't spoil it if people still haven't seen it). Disney really clicked into a nice of the power Ballard for this one that's for certain. I'm pretty sure Broadway and Landon west end producers are sick of hearing this as a audition piece by now. If any one wants a really good Version of it have it in three key's higher ( due to my own vocal capability's). So Yeah. Go Disney for being kinda epic.

daikokunyo 11-11-2015 04:43 AM

I liked it. I wasn't blown away by it but it was nice. I liked the message, yeah.

Just that I can't believe it was based off the Snow Queen story, even loosely. It's nothing like the Snow Queen story.

RedRum 02-07-2016 09:18 PM

Coda - Trailers are often misleading. I've had to be cornered into seeing countless borderline amazing films because their trailers passed them off as incredibly idiotic.

Frozen has so many refreshingly unique elements such as secondary princess and a prince who was actually the villain and the concept was thought provokingly in depth but I felt it was underdeveloped, leaving a lot of missed opportunities.

There was absolutely no backstory; no explanation to justify that Elsa was born with magical abilities or how a lone child playing out on dangerous terrain went totally unnoticed by those around him and grew to see human being as betrayers. We don't ever know where the King and Queen were going when they died in that shipwreck or how Olaf came to life.

What bugged me most, however, were all the references to the ritual which took Anna's memory which never came together.
*Anna begging Elsa to know why she shut her out all their lives.
*Hans points out Anna's blonde lock and she responds that she's had it since she was born.
*Anna remembers Olaf.
*Kristoff tells Anna that he knows his "love expert" "friends" can help after Anna is struck in the heart by Elsa because he's seen them do it before.

All these mentions seemed to be a path to a revelation in which Anna and Kristoff would learn of that ritual in Anna's childhood and Anna of why she really had that blond lock, why she presumably never knew about Elsa's powers and why Elsa had been isolated from her. Yet it all led to nowhere. That's just sloppy and thoughtless to me. Not to mention quite disappointing.

I also feel that Anna's character could have used more depth.
Kristen Belle once performed a deleted sang at an event that presumably was replaced by 'Love is An Open Door' as it supposedly used the same music called 'The Spare'. It's Anna saying that she wanted to be more than just Elsa's runner up for Queen of Arendelle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=dKUGDQCzGz0
I'd have liked to see them go somewhere with this concept. It's such a smart psycological thought process for the younger sibling of an heir.
The rushed love vs. real love thing was great but it didn't really highlight that she's a princess. The least they could have done is discuss corinating Anna when Elsa had scared everyone and taken off. Wouldn't that have even been the logical thing to do?

I appreciate 'Once Upon a Time' for filling in some of these gaps but what they did with it was circumstantial, it can only apply to their show and it was still lacking.

I enjoy the film I just wish better care had been taken to bring out it's full potential.
