Halloween Writing Contest!
On a dark and stormy night, much like this one... Do you take fright when something goes bump in the night? Or do you grab a pen and begin to write? Now is your chance to author something spoopy and win some prizes while doing it! Below you'll have your selection of 3 (three) writing prompts. Pick a prompt and write from it, taking the base information and writing in any direction that you please. Something scary, silly, or halfway in between! It's your call! Now, there are a few rules. Please read the rules very carefully, as a submission that violates them will be disqualified, and you will have to submit a new story if you wish to continue to participate. Rules of (writing) Engagement: 1) Most important: Please PM me your submission. Do not post it here. You may discuss the event and anything pertaining to it here, but please do not post your submission. Send it to me in a private message. 2) Absolutely no plagiarism. I will be checking, and I have many strong ninjas trained in the art of Google-Fu, as well as one particular librarian familiar with L-Space. Plagiarism will earn you an instant disqualification, as well as a disappointed shake of the head. 3) All submissions must be in by the end of November 8th, no later than that. 4) All submissions may be no shorter than 200 words. I'm not asking for Melville length writing, buuuut I'm going to need more than the length of a free advert in the local paper. 5) Have fun! The submission skeleton (Spooky!) is as follows: Our story begins... The writing prompts are as follows. You may pick from any, as they will all be judged together. And the prompts are... 1) “Help! Help!” You hear a voice crying out from the creepy abandoned manor. Your helpful nature guilts you in to going inside. What was calling for you, and what happens to you inside? 2) It's Halloween, and the skeleton armies have risen up to take back the Earth! How do you fight off the undead armies and live to see the day? 3) You are DEAD! But you are also a ghost! A typical suburban family has moved in to the place that you haunt. What happens, and how do you (un)live with them? And the winner is...(Prizes) Submissions will be judged on overall quality of the work, as well as how engaging I find the story. There will be A First, Second, and Third prize, as well as participation prizes for all who enter. And the prizes are... First Prize: Calaca Bundle Second Prize: 8 Jackoloots Third Prize: 4 Jackoloots Participation Prize: One RIG item of your choice. Have fun and enjoy! And the winners are... First Place: pink pantzer Entry: Second Place: Lawtan Entry: Third Place: Illusion Entry: |
A writing contest! My favorite!
I do have a (stupid) question though. The prompts all say, you, so does the story need to be in first person narrative? |

Thank you!
I should get started. Gather my thoughts, jot down ideas, don't procrastinate... |
I'm half tempted to write a story just so I could answer the "Did you read the rules?" question.
Because I haven't. Nvm.... Scratch it, I scrolled up to make sure you weren't talking about the overall forum rules and read them. Welp, I'm not motivated anymore. G'luck on all the entries! Edit Btw, I was just teasing. :P I might be writing a story but not sure. Depends if I remember or not. |
I will attempt a story! I may even try to work my avatar into is a little. It's kind of spooky, maybe?
|
Oh yes I am so doing this when I have the chance to write up something fantastically scary!
|
I think I'mma do number 1. I like the ambiguity there.
|
If I can, I'll try #2...I have a nice idea for that one.
hehehe |
Well, since nobody's doing it yet, I might think of something for #3. It's gonna be hard not to do some sort of Beetlejuice parody though...
|
I will admit, that's the first thing that came to my mind, too.
|
That, Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, or Grim Fandango...essentially one cornerstone of my childhood.
Could take a different approach, though. Mine makes me think of "Army of Darkness" |
Woot that was fun to write!

If you're into that sort of deal, Zombies!!! is a delightful board game to play. Players alternate taking their own turns as well as playing the zombies, so you can make things difficult for your opponents as well as you try to escape to safety. You can buy an extra "bag-o-zombies" if you find you run out of new ones to put down on the board during play. We've needed them. Prompt 2 does sound like a lot of fun though, but I think it would be hard to come up with something new. I'll see which way I lean by the end of the day. |
Writing impetus gone. All gone. Plah.
How long does this event run for? Might be able to manage something. I think my daily October scribble thing burnt me out. I'm quite happy to not write for the time being. |
It ends on the 8th. Plan on using the 7th to write mine.
I think I have an original idea for it... |
Yes yes, the 8th is the final day to submit something. Write! Put those keyboards and pens and tablet and chisel combos to work! Produce for me a mastery! Or at least, a hashed out barely cohesive script in a cheap attempt to win some stuff! Somewhere in between, really.
|
Well given our modem blew up at work today I did get some down time to scribble out half a thing, but whether it turns into a full thing, let alone a full worthy thing, remains to be seen.
|
Mine is most certainly not worthy. It is dry and ~1000 words. 2-3 paragraphs away from finishing (So another 100-200 words)
I don't like how stereotypical it is, but it is a rough draft at best. ^^' |
I can appreciate dry, Law. And no worries about length, I'll take them long ot short. Minimum was only put in to avoid my inbox getting flooded with "I am spoop" or something.
|
And...submitted. It was interesting, to say the least :)
|
I appreciate it! I am up to three entries so far! Hope everyone is writing feverishly!
|
Feverishly no. More lethargic. Not going well.
|
*Hugs Quiet* Sorry.
|
Happens. I burnt myself out in October on little writing exercise. In the meantime, here's the little snippet I wrote out when the computers at work were down:
"The zombie apocalypse plan had a few holes in it when it came to applying it to other manifestations of undead. For one, a shot gun did a fat lot of good against a fleshless skeleton, unless you were close enough to fire point-blank into its skull. But then, at that range you may as well have armed yourself with a set of golf clubs and worked on your swing…less chance of accidental fire into your hip. Poor Jim was always more of a baseball fellow. He left his bat mounted on the wall. After that, kicking and stomping generally got the rest of the bones to stop twitching. Zombies were fresher –in a manner of speaking. Anything that was dead long enough to become a skeleton generally didn’t have much in the way of teeth to bite with." I haven't gotten to the part where hitting skeletons with cars is nasty on one's windshield, and that cow-catchers are coming back into fashion. |
Results are in! Check the front page for the results! As far as rewards go, they will be incoming shortly! Winners, if you can message me what item from the Halloween event you would like, that would be lovely. Will also shoot you messages here in a bit.
|
Congrats Pinkie, Lawtan, and Illusion!
|
Oh yay! That makes me so happy I didn't have a chance to get enough candies to get the bundle.
|
Congrats, Pink! And AAAAAh! *Falls under a Jackaloot pile*
|
*reads my terrible Twilight ripoff*
LOL Hue hue hue. Making fun of Twilight rewards me so. |
Sort of figured as much. Hmm...Illusion's undead Skelli-Twilight army against my Hornet-Hive Lovecraftian Mummy-ripoff army...
|
And here I just had run of the mill skeletons.
