"O’ mighty crone of ancient lore,
Shall I sing you a tune?
For my people wished to honor,
One as fierce as you.”

A-huum, huu-huum

“O, Cailleach, what grand old strength,
You bear within your form,
You embrace all the graces of winter,
So pretty is your frostbitten hair
So nice it is, would you sit down,
I’d love to sing you some more.”

A-roar, ro-roar

“O, Cailleach, what’s this you say,
Your lids droop wth sleep,
Then allow me, fair crone,
To take you to your home,
A cave alone which could be warm,
In the face of eternal winter,
There, you may rest,
And collect your wood in an hour.”

A-oor, oo-oor

“What’s this, dear Cailleach,
You look far too pale and wan,
My people would not forgive me,
If you I let to stray,
Stay and rest and grow well again,
The wood will not move,
Let me play a lullaby for you-
I think it may sound similar,
So let me soothe you into sleep,
And make your worries for today be forgotten…”

So, the Trickster packed his flute,
And left the slumbering Crone,
And he, sun-child, headed west,
Back to his Long-house People.

So, yeah, this is a place where I will archive stuff about winter festivals - links, art, poetry, and the like - that will carry over into the next Festival of Frost. It is also just a place to hang out - talk about knitting, or cookie recipes, or just randomness.

Hugs to you all, and remember the Trisphee Rules and All

I almost wish I could deal with finals again.
Not having a job in months is driving me nuts. @_ @

Lawtan 12-18-2015 03:34 PM

Eh, I am glad they are over for me. Time to get some stuff together here.

Fulkth 12-18-2015 05:12 PM

Hi guys!

I figured I should stop by and check out this shiny new thread! :)

Potironette 12-18-2015 05:14 PM

Wahaha I'm so happy my exams are over for the week, and probably for until after Xmas break. Though granted I have lots of projects to do @~@
My midterms are in January

Lawtan 12-18-2015 07:17 PM

*Waves at Fulkth* How's it going?

Also, January midterm...eep...

Nightmare 12-18-2015 07:20 PM

I have returned after curling up in my bed. - u-
Not having central heat sucks a bit. I'm worried
of keeping my heater on just because it costs a
ton to run.

Yeah, I'm sure it is nice for them to be over, though.
Extra stress is never a fun thing. |D

Do you knit? I can do a basic stitch and the other one (a purl or something?) but that's it.

Fulkth 12-18-2015 07:58 PM

Yum! I love cookies!

You are such a great host, Lawton! n-n

I remember one Christmas, the hostess slept the entire day and I was left to entertain myself. I was bored to tears. I also could not take a shower because I was not provided any towels.

Lawtan 12-18-2015 07:58 PM

About the same level. I am better with leatherworking and woodcarving.

Oh, dear.

Potironette 12-18-2015 07:59 PM

Leatherworking? What is that? Woodcarving? Is that carving little things or big things?

Lawtan 12-18-2015 08:03 PM

Leatherworking - making objects (pouches, bags, shoes, clothes, etc) out of leather (animal hides) as well as being able to dye leathers and imprint markings on them (artistic)

There are more things, but that is more a friend of mine's territory.

Woodworking is largely artistic - making dragon heads the size of your hand, or carving multipurpose walking sticks...

Haven't gotten to the "make a detailed beaver sculpture with a chainsaw" point.

Fulkth 12-18-2015 10:29 PM

So...it's safe to assume that you get a lot of splinters working with wood?

Lawtan 12-19-2015 12:14 AM

Depends. As said, I don'd work with big saws - I do more fine stuff...so more finger cuts than splinters.

Fulkth 12-19-2015 12:43 AM

Ouch, that sounds pretty painful! D;

Dying leather? I've never seen dyed leather before, unless I have and leather is dyed leather color. Actually, I've never seen real leather in person before, probably. Anyways, do you dye leathers in actual colors? Like pink, yellow, and purple? Un-leathery colors?

Fulkth 12-19-2015 11:07 AM

That's probably where minecraft got the dyed leather armor from! :o

So I am pretty sure dyed leather (in pink, yellow, and purple) is a real thing!

Potironette 12-19-2015 11:33 AM

Ahhh, I had no idea. Logically when I think about it, leather can be dyed. Maybe it's because people where I'm from want to make this "it's real leather" statement that leather things are always leather colored. Um, fake leather things are always leather colored.

Fulkth 12-19-2015 12:19 PM

Look! I found some pink leather! I am not sure if it's real leather though.
And if it is, how did it get so pink? O.O

Potironette 12-19-2015 12:26 PM

Woah! That's amazing! That looks like it's pink rubber or something! I'm curious how leather takes dye also!

Lawtan 12-19-2015 01:11 PM

Leather is skin (and somewhat fur) of an animal.
Essentially, think about a process similar to bleaching and dying your hair.

Fulkth 12-19-2015 01:21 PM

@lawtan

You make it sound so easy! XD

Fulkth 12-19-2015 01:22 PM

Snowmen need names too!

Wait, sorry wrong thread.

I don't know how I got here. D:

Potironette 12-19-2015 01:28 PM

Euh, I've never dyed my dark black hair before. But I'm guessing you take a chemical -->put it on leather -->leather gets weaker and lighter -->add dye -->wait or something? -->It's now super colorful! Like how some people how cotton-candy and fire-red hairs!

Are all leathers the same?

Lawtan 12-19-2015 01:35 PM

Nope - some animal hides are really bad for the process, and then there is the more processed variety that is cheaper but much more flimsy. And you use different chemicals for different purposes - some chemicals make it hard enough for a drum, other more suitable for clothing.
(Example: there is a lyme process used to remove fur and all - as I recently learned in Medieval Studies, that process also hardens the fur and when stretched out is cut to make vellum - paper for old books)

Potironette 12-19-2015 01:56 PM

Hrm, what animals do you use mostly? And also, is leather more than skin? Because leather always seems really thick to me and I don't see how skins can be that thick.

And, odd question but: If you use a process leather on human skin. Would it also be a leather? Actually, what's leather really? Processed skin?

Lawtan 12-19-2015 03:35 PM

The hides (skin - treated so as to prevent protein decay and all) tend to come from farms nowadays, sometimes from hunters...so largely cattle and deer. It's use in the book industry was possibly where the idea of writing made flesh comes from.

I had to look up the human skin one. (Bad horror enthusiast - I should have already known xD). It has been done - enough to coin the term "Anthropodermic Bibliopegy" for books bound in human skin. I don't think the material would be as strong, though I think all vellum (book leather) lasts longer than paper.
Also, it was apparently a fad to use alongside cadaver study in the 17/18th centuries. Some folk have made themselves into books/keepsakes after they died.
Now, a company claiming to use donated human skin (it is an organ...so organ donation) sells leather at $14000 a wallet. Personally think that is more of a scam.

And yeah, essentially. Paper is processed plant tissue. Vellum processed animal tissue.

Interestingly, Vellum is better at preserving mistakes - when a record was "erased" and all. Sort of acts like a clay mold of the thing, and has been useful in finding old stories people tried to scrape away.

Potironette 12-19-2015 04:09 PM

Oh wow, that's amazing. Using human skin was a thing! I don't know what I would feel about having my ancestor's skin used as a book though.

...And I don't see why anyone would want a wallet made of human skin. Maybe a few buyers, but surely not enough to sustain a company.

I wonder if the mold thing has something to do with animal cells vs plant cells. Plant cells have cell walls. Animal cells don't. Plant cells stick together, animal cells are looser and more squishy...okay, I'm rambling now.

What kind of "old stories"?

Tas 12-19-2015 04:14 PM

human leather sounds pretty gross.

Potironette 12-19-2015 05:28 PM

Yes, yes it does sound gross. It's like wearing a necklace made of another human's teeth or something.

On a brighter note, I'm pretty excited for seeing stores decorated all Christmas-y come Christmas. It's super warm where I am as of now, so I'm probably not going to get a white Xmas, but fake snowflakes, tinsels, and Christmas trees everywhere sets a nice mood :D

Rainbowfox Ari 12-19-2015 05:52 PM

Lovely Spring we're having this Winter, isn't it?

Potironette 12-19-2015 06:09 PM

Yep, I love going outside without a jacket on!
You're also having a warm Winter?

Rainbowfox Ari 12-19-2015 06:13 PM

Extremely. It's Georgia, so.... no snow, and barely any cold.
It's cold tonight, though.

Potironette 12-19-2015 06:24 PM

You're on the East coast also! I'm in New York so I'm not as far south.
I haven't gone outside, but the meteorologists report that it will be colder this week-end.
The next week will be warm again though, and Christmas will be 58 degrees (high).
