Coffee

I love it, but it makes me feel horrible.
I never feel energized, usually the opposite: jittery, shakey, fatigued. It's so weird. :l
Plus, it makes me have to poop...like a lot.

I was told something interesting in my Personality Psych class last semester, though.
Its just a theory but:
People who are introverts tend to handle depressants, like alcohol, better than extroverts. They don't get crazy and loud when they're drunk, and tend to be calm. With stimulants, like coffee, it affects them more harshly than extroverts.
People who are extroverts are the opposite: alcohol makes them more active and excited, while coffee doesn't really have an affect on them.
I think I worded/explained that right.
Does this fit any of you guys? I feel like I fit into that idea (I'm on the border between Introvert and Extrovert, but lean a little more towards Introvert).

Potironette 06-25-2016 12:05 AM

I've never drunk coffee, but whenever I eat a lot of chocolate that happens to me too. My heart starts beating really fast and it gets kind of uncomfortable if I really ate too much (a bar at once)...I get sleepy when I eat chocolate somehow also.

I'm an introvert.

I'm an introvert.

That's so interesting that chocolate does that to you!
I wonder what is in it that bothers you so much...maybe the sugar?

Potironette 06-25-2016 12:11 AM

Probably xD. Since it's chocolate it might be sugar and blood sugar levels causes it or something along those lines.

SparX 06-25-2016 12:22 AM

That happens to me in general with caffeine, even with my black tea lol XD
There's even some asprin my mom used to give me (Generic brand equate) that holds some caffeine in them D: DX
And when I drink, I usualy turn into "Mom-Friend" and take care of anyone, make them food, carry them to the bathroom, am super friendly and affectionate, so on so forth lol XD

That's what I was thinking.
I get like the same way when I don't eat. :L

Yeah, you can take pain-killers with caffeine to help with Migraines. :P
I haven't actually tried that yet for my migraines...
Are you an extrovert or an introvert?

SparX 06-25-2016 12:29 AM

Extrovert behind the screen, introvert on the scene ;D
I'm the kinda person that sits in the corner and watches people alot, but I also do want to enjoy the company of people. Alas I cannot stand talking to or dealing with them in general and over a short period of time find myself usually rather annoyed with peoples noisiness.

Pessimisticat 06-25-2016 12:42 AM

I love how you worded that, haha.
You do seem super extro-verty here, but I guess a lot of people are like that. My oldest sister is.
I tend to have a few really close friends, and one super close friend. People annoy the ever-living crap out of me too, so I can only handle them so much. I've just gotten a lot better at talking to strangers, because of my job. Retail requires you to be social ;(

Potironette 06-25-2016 12:49 AM

Hrm, I guess I'm also kind of extroverted then..?
I really love being around people and watching them, but get drained from actually having to talk to them ><

SparX 06-25-2016 12:50 AM

That it does. Thank goodness I'm finally free of retail work for the time being XD I much prefer retail to fast food guest services though D: I also was mostly able to get over my fear of phones via retail work.

Potironette 06-25-2016 12:56 AM

Fear of phones? That's interesting because I don't have a phone of my own even though my mom wanted me to have one xD. I also hate having to pick up the home-phone whenever someone calls.

Yeah, being an introvert/extrovert is how you get your energy. So being drained by being around people would make you an introvert, vs an extrovert who would get energized. I love being around my friends, but afterwords I need a day or so to recuperate.

I refuse to work in the food industry ._. and yes, same! Although, it isn't completely gone but I'm more willing now than before to call people.

More a fear of talking on phones. It started when I was a kid, we still had a coiled cord phone XD
It's so stressful. I can never speak loud enough, people always talk over you, and you can never find a way to get out of a conversation without staring at your phone while it rings or just running away to a different room so you aren't "around" to deal with it >.>
My average phone convo is 1:25 XD
People who actually try to talk to me though drag it out to 17 to 23 minutes .-. I don't agree with that, they've all done it as long as I have known them lol .-. You can only say ok and yeah so many times before just setting the phone down and staring at it .-.

Pessimisticat 06-25-2016 01:14 AM

I used to love talking on the phone to my friends. Could do it for hours. Random people, though? Nope. I hated that for all of those reasons you just listed. xD
I feel like if someone starts replying with "yeah" and "okay" then they obviously don't want to talk and it would be a good time to hang up :P Maybe they just can't take the hint?

Potironette 06-25-2016 01:15 AM

Oh dear :/
While I don't fear phones, I dislike it partly because I never seem to hear people correctly--their voice just sounds static-y or weird.
I don't speak on the phone enough to experience being stuck on it, but I do listen to people at home having hour long conversations in the kitchen and the bathroom x'D

Pessimisticat 06-25-2016 01:17 AM

I always go to the bathroom when I'm on the phone, LOL.
I mumble, too, so my parents are always like "SPEAK UP" -_-
I also have a friend who always calls me when he's in his car, and I can't hear 99% of what he says for the life of me. He always wants to have those deep-conversations at that time, too.

Potironette 06-25-2016 01:21 AM

Haha, I more or less speak right onto the phone if I really have to talk to someone.

Since there's only one bathroom at home, sometimes I'll see the person talking move from the bathroom to the kitchen and back when other people need to use either the bathroom or the kitchen.

Pessimisticat 06-25-2016 01:31 AM

I just talk normally, and I guess I "normally" mumble? Idk. ;c

I wonder why they only go to those two places xD I tend to pace around everywhere on the phone, unless I'm in bed.

Coda 06-25-2016 01:36 AM

I don't think I agree with the suggestion that introverts don't handle stimulants well. (Though I do handle alcohol just fine; my tolerance is ridiculously high.) I'm pretty heavily introverted, but caffeine is LIFE. WIth stimulants in my system I think more clearly and have a better tolerance for things the world throws at me. (I am a little more sensitive to annoying sounds, though.)

Pessimisticat 06-25-2016 01:41 AM

Does caffeine make you feel energized?
I think me wording it "not handling it well" wasn't the best way, whoops. :P I wish I could word it the way my professor did, but I don't really remember the way he did. Sorry for my kind of crappy interpretation and wording.

I feel like I'm a hit or miss with annoying sounds.
I have crickets, since I have lizards, and they constantly chirp but I've practically drowned them out. When I'm trying to sleep, though, the slightest weird noise bothers me.
ex: the fan chains smacking against the light bulb protector thing

Awen Moonshine 06-25-2016 05:23 AM

I used to practically live on energy drinks and coffee when I was a teenager and it would have little to no effect on me, they were just another drink, but back then I was very much an extrovert.

However now I have to have decaf coffee and can't touch energy drinks without it making my chest hurt and getting dizzy. I am really introverted now, even online. I barely leave the house unless I really have to and get really wiped out when having to interact with people other than my partner and child...

Poggio 06-25-2016 08:01 AM

I don't know what I am.

Tbh I am like a flower some days. Give me enough sunshine and I can be hyper and bouncy and all around happy.

I don't drink coffee, and I don't drink alcohol. The smell of coffee really makes me sick in the morning. I usually try to stay away from the office because my coworkers are addicted to it like it is another component of their blood.

I have been drinking V8 energy drinks and the effect varies. I used to be able to feel the boost and notice a difference when I had to work early shifts. Around my lunch time at 7 am it would help me get through the rest of the day. Now not so much. For the most part I drink tea. Its mostly to calm my nerves and get myself back to focusing on something instead of being stressed out about life. I don't know if that makes me an introvert or extrovert since that is the trait I tend to flip flop on when taking personality test XD.

Coda 06-25-2016 12:21 PM

I don't know if I'd necessarily say it makes me feel "energized" but it works just fine for keeping me awake and combating fatigue.

Pessimisticat 06-26-2016 06:52 PM

Awen: I absolutely hate energy drinks. Most of them, if not all of them, taste disgusting and don't really do anything for me. I receive no benefit from drinking one xD
My SO is the only person I can hangout with constantly and not have to take a break from. You definitely sound like an introvert, now! How interesting that coffee has changed like that for you, though. Makes you wonder if what my prof says has some meaning.

Poggio: It really is more how you get your energy than how you act. If being around a lot of people tires you out and you need to be alone for a day or two after, than you're an introvert. If being around a lot of people gives you energy (vs being alone), than you're an extrovert. If anything, you could just be right on the border, like me. :)

Coda: Well then you're a total lucky ducky :P I wish I could drink coffee and not feel like total garbage afterwards. I still will drink it, though, cause its hella amazing.

Coda 06-26-2016 09:59 PM

Good-quality coffee avoids a lot of the side effects. Cheap coffee will make you poo. Good coffee in moderation won't.

Pessimisticat 06-26-2016 10:29 PM

Coda: What, seriously???????????????? I wish I had known that before. I definitely have to try some good quality coffee to see if its true! 8)

Coda 06-26-2016 10:53 PM

McDonald's coffee makes me poo almost invariably, even after they switched to allegedly-better coffee than the even cheaper junk they used to sell. And I think there might be a qualitative difference between drip coffee and espresso-based drinks, because even in making my own coffee I've had different results between the two. It might also have something to do with how long the coffee is allowed to stand before being served. I can't say for sure but there seems to be a correlation.

Den 06-27-2016 04:21 AM

I'm very introverted, but if you were to cut me, I'd bleed caffinated liquid. I'm also prone to migraines, and the caffeine helps alleviate that. I don't drink very often, but with hard liquor, it doesn't leave me hungover. Wine and beer do, though.

Potironette 06-27-2016 11:10 AM

I actually normally never drink anything flavored. Actually, I normally never drink anything except water when I feel thirsty--or when I feel obligated to because I need it to live. The idea of drinking hot coffee, cold coffee, hot chocolate, or cold chocolate seems kind of foreign to me x'D

That's because hangovers are based on dehydration, and wine and beer are weaker. You can drink those instead of drinking non-alcoholic drinks and not feel thirsty. Hard liquor doesn't feel like you're drinking liquids, so you're also drinking something else with it.

Foday 06-27-2016 12:42 PM

how do i wear the carnival noble blouse without my characters hands sticking out

Coda 06-27-2016 12:43 PM

Turn your base off and use the Adam parts from the shops to fill in any parts of your skin that DO need to be visible.

Pessimisticat 06-28-2016 01:51 PM

Coda: I think I'm okay with McDonald's because I usually just get the iced coffee things, and those don't murder me. Neither does Dunkin Donuts'. Starbucks', on the other hand, their ice coffee makes me poo my soul out, lol. I normally buy the cheapest coffee at the store, or whatever is on sale, and I use a percolater. I can't drink too much of it, since it usually does kill me.

Den: It's weird, I get hella-bad migraines, too, but caffeine doesn't really seem to help. I've also never gotten drunk to the point where I end up having a hangover.

Potironette: GOOD! That's a super awesome habit to have. I wish I could say the same for myself ;( I don't like hot drinks, so I normally just drink iced coffee/tea/chocolate milk, but will go for a hot chocolate every now and again.

Coda 06-28-2016 03:08 PM

IMO, drip > perc.

If you want to order iced coffee from Starbucks, order an iced Americano instead of iced coffee. The former is brewed on the spot and poured over ice while the latter comes out of a premixed box in the refrigerator. Though do note that it will come black by default (unlike an iced coffee which you CAN'T order unsweetened or without milk) and you'll need to say "with cream and sugar" or however you like it.

Poggio 06-28-2016 09:50 PM

@.@ oh man, I am so glad I am a tea drinker.

And I think its hard to gauge if being around people makes me excited or not. I work in customer service. You do it in high volume long enough it makes even the most energetic person tired.

And sadly I can't really figure out how to order at starbucks. I think my coworker once told me I may like a frappcino? Or an expressio.

As for McDonalds in general, idk how you eat there. At all ._. I've heard stories.

Coda 06-29-2016 12:57 AM

Actually I rather like most of the menu at McDonald's. It's obviously a guilty pleasure because it's not good for you at all, and their regular hamburgers are kinda bland, but aside from that and the coffee it's not bad.

As for ordering at Starbucks... They just made up fancy names for their sizes. Relative to common soft drink sizes, "tall" is very small (12oz), "grande" is small (16oz), "venti" is medium (20-24oz depending on the drink), and "trenta" is large (30oz).

Frappuccinos are definitely things you can feel safe ordering in terms of flavor, because it's BASICALLY like a milkshake. They're also ridiculously loaded with sugar and will ruin your diet. >.>;

Straight espresso is NOT something you want to order if you don't know what you like. It's worth trying, because you MIGHT like it, but it's VERY strong -- it's served in shots, not cups. So don't order espresso unless you're willing to take a gamble on whether or not you like it. (Me, I like it, but Starbucks charges way too much for the straight shots; something you can add to a drink for $0.60 costs twice that if you want to order it straight?)

Cafe Americano is espresso plus hot water. It's roughly the strength of normal brewed coffee, but it's got a different flavor. It's a little sweeter and a little bolder. You can also order it iced, which is basically the espresso poured over ice cubes so that they melt into a cold drink.

Cappuccino is a bittersweet drink. It's espresso plus steamed milk and frothed milk.

Cafe Latte is espresso plus steamed milk. The flavor is similar to but milder than cappuccino. It's considered a good starter drink if you don't know what to order.

Cafe Mocha is a latte with dark chocolate added to it. It's one of the sweetest traditional espresso drinks, and it's also a good starter drink.

A flat white is similar to a cappuccino, except the espresso is made differently and the proportions are different. It's sweeter and richer than cappuccino, but not overly sweet. It's one of my favorite drinks. It's... also rather expensive. The way I order it (venti, with mocha syrup) rings up at over $6.

But basically, yeah, if you don't know what you want to order, a mocha is pretty safe, or a latte if you want something less sweet.

Pessimisticat 06-29-2016 02:05 AM

Coda: I really don't think I like Cappucinos. Too boring for me. :P
I'm definitely going to try out the Americano next time I go, just to see how I like it/how it effects me in comparison to a regular iced coffee.
I also had a drip coffee maker, but then someone forgot to clean it and it got filled with bugs...so I bought a percolater since it is just wayyyyyyyy easier to clean, at least for me. xD

Poggio: Next time you hangout with your friends see how you feel afterwards 8) I work in retail, so because of it I've definitely gotten more extroverted. You'd probably like a frappucino since I'm pretty sure there isn't coffee in there at all and it's just an awesome flavored drink full of sugar and diabetes 8)
And as Coda said, McDonald's is basically a guilty pleasure :P

Coda 06-29-2016 11:46 AM

Some Frappuccinos have coffee. Some don't. They used to be listed separately on the menu but it seems that most of their menu isn't actually posted up on the wall anymore. Kinda annoying when I feel like trying something different. ^^() At least the mobile app has a more comprehensive (but still not complete -- you can order stuff in person that isn't listed) menu.

(It's not so much a "secret menu" thing as it is that the baristas know how to make a LOT of stuff and it just gets rung up as a variant of the items that are on the menu.)

Coda 06-29-2016 12:03 PM

Me, I want to try a cafe Cubano next time. You add raw/demerara/turbinado/brown sugar to the coffee grounds in the espresso machine. That said, I don't know if Starbucks will actually DO that because I'm not certain their espresso machine will let them.

And thinking about it, I remember a couple more drinks I forgot to mention; they're not on the menu, but I'm reasonably certain they can make a cortado, which is an espresso mixed with steamed milk to make it less acidic. (It's basically a cappuccino minus the foam.) There's also the cafe macchiato, which is the same thing but with less milk.

It makes something of a sliding scale of darkness:

Espresso/Americano > Macchiato > Cortado > Cappuccino > Latte

Then you've got the flat white and the latte macchiato (a Starbucks invention, but it's foamed milk and espresso) that don't quite fit in the scale directly because they're prepared differently (basically, both are thicker and creamier, and the flat white is sweeter without needing to add sugar), but they're both roughly in the middle of the scale.

Pessimisticat 06-30-2016 03:22 PM

Yeah, I think it definitely depends on the kind of Frappucino. Like, I doubt the Vanilla Bean Frappe has coffee in it, but I'm pretty sure the Java Chip Frappe does.
I wasn't a huge fan of the cafe macchiato, either. I guess I just like the stuff pumped with creamers. I also find myself having a hard time differentiating between tastes. To me, a lot of it just tastes the same. Different brands, different styles, different brewing, whatever. I don't have a sophisticated tongue, I suppose. Its like that with beer, too. Can't taste a difference. xD
Also, holy crud, you weren't kidding about coffee (caffeine) being life, lol. Were you a barista once, or are you just a huge coffee connoisseur?
