Exchange your food

The exchange will now take any item you've gotten from this event, and give you a different random item from the event!

It was an unfortunate oversight on my part that prevented that until now, but at least this oversight also prevented the items from being exchanged for non-event things, so you didn't miss out.

Also! There might be a use for a few spare food items next month, we'll see...

Potironette 11-22-2016 03:46 PM

-dunks in some items-
The only thing is, no screen shows up to tell me the item I get after I put in an event item. The items do exchange though.

Tohopekaliga 11-22-2016 03:48 PM

...? Really, that's odd. Lemme see if I can pin down why that happened.

Tohopekaliga 11-22-2016 03:53 PM

Hah, woops. Neglected to actually commit adding the message to the response, which meant you got the item, but the exchange didn't know what to tell you so, it shrugged and went back to its desk.

Potironette 11-22-2016 03:58 PM

Yay it works now! That was fast thanks! I got some event items I didn't have :D

Shadami 11-22-2016 05:16 PM

Oh? What is happening next month I wonder!

Ginger 11-23-2016 09:01 PM

Posty posty! I'm hungry.

Rainbowfox Ari 11-24-2016 10:15 AM

-Noms on Ginger's tasty-looking Green- You are very well-dressed, yes. Your green looks tasty. XD

XoGizmooX 11-24-2016 08:13 PM

Next month???? Hmmmm maybe snowfood snowmen :)

Potironette 12-03-2016 09:26 PM

Now that the event's ended... Is it possible to get other things when trading the event stuff :o?

Tohopekaliga 12-03-2016 09:28 PM

The exchange is still set to exchange foodfight for foodfight.

Typically, I don't switch that out until the next event rolls around.

Might consider changing that policy, though.

Potironette 12-03-2016 09:31 PM

Ohh okay, but it'll start giving different stuff eventually :D!

Tohopekaliga 12-03-2016 09:52 PM

Yup! Only the current or most recent event items exchange among themselves. After a new event comes up, past event items end up in the same pool as RIGs.

Potironette 12-04-2016 01:27 PM

When I think about it, maybe having event items stuck together after the event is a good thing, since it gives hope for those who have event items to find missing ones, but more than that it keeps those items in the exchange longer after the event?

Still, how does it work? Does it give a random item that people have tossed in, or is it special in just tossing out random things? If it's the first way, then does that mean you have to throw in a bunch of event items at the beginning of an event?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 01:54 PM

The exchange works entirely based on the inventory of a specific user. (A user I added expressly for that.) So, yes, I generally add a bunch of event items to the inventory at the beginning to ensure it works.

It does a bit of a lookup to decide what an item is. If it's one of the shop freebies, it won't let you exchange it, and if you donate it, it deletes it.

If it's a shop item (in common shop & costs something), it'll swap it with a different shop item. ...I honestly can't remember offhand if token shop items are lumped in with that or not. They might be.

If it's a donation item (costs runes), it won't let you do anything with it.

If it's in the currently specified event item set, it swaps among those.

If it's anything else, they swap among themselves. That means RIG, event, and game items are treated the same.

Potironette 12-04-2016 02:38 PM

Ohh that's really cool! It's like trading with another user every time the exchange is used! I wonder what that use is :o?

What's a RIG..?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 02:49 PM

RIG means Random Item Generator, and on Trisphee typically refers to the Anka eggs and the items that pop out of them.

Events also often have RIGs. (recall the Cupholder a few months back)

Potironette 12-04-2016 02:51 PM

Ohh, I keep forgetting that those things can be thrown into the Exchange XD.

...what's a Cupholder? I might not have been around then because I left Trisphee for a bit.

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 02:59 PM

Oh, it was an event item earlier this year. Had a bunch of off the wall items in it.

Also, the exchange user is "Exchange-O-Tron," but I've never set up an avatar or anything for it. :P

Might be funny to have it put on the last item it's been given, and take them off again if it happens to pick those items, or there's more than 30 or so on it. lol.

Potironette 12-04-2016 03:05 PM

XD That would be pretty funny.

Too bad I can't find "Exchange-O-Tron" anywhere. Is it an NPC?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 03:13 PM

I left the user in a state that it doesn't show up in the member list. If I ever did make it more visible for funsies, you'd be able to find it.

Really, it just exists so I can have a guaranteed userid for sticking inventory into.

Potironette 12-04-2016 03:22 PM

That makes a lot of sense, especially given that the exchange isn't a person, though I can't help but feel like looking for it XD

Was it simpler to make the userid not show up :o?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 03:27 PM

All I did was never go through the 'activation email' step. :P Users who don't do that don't end up in the memberlist.

Potironette 12-04-2016 03:32 PM

Ohh, I see. What about NPCs? Are they just not users..? Or are they also not activated accounts?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 03:33 PM

NPCs are a special usergroup, with some code things to facilitate doing things with them.

Potironette 12-04-2016 03:42 PM

Usergroup?
Code things...as in they aren't logged into but make posts and whatever it is they do using something special.?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 03:50 PM

There's some old code for admins to edit npc avatars. I don't think it actually works.

Users in a forum are divided into groups. Generally speaking, you have: registered, moderator, super moderator, admin, banned. Plus other things we make like "artist" and "writer."

Coda 12-04-2016 03:59 PM

Yeah, I got started on the NPC-management code so we wouldn't have to share passwords for the NPC accounts, but I never bothered making much progress on it because in the long run none of the relevant staffers had a problem with just logging in with a different browser.

The big advantage of using an NPC account for the exchange is that it can use all of the existing stuff we built for inventory management instead of writing stuff specifically for the task.

Potironette 12-04-2016 04:01 PM

Oh! So everything's a user, just those get separated and NPCs happen to be, uh, special.

Lol XD. I guess NPCs don't really need to change outfits.

...the exchange is an NPC account?

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 04:03 PM

There is no real difference between an npc account and a regular user account, except that the NPCs are labeled as such, and no one is that user.

Coda 12-04-2016 04:04 PM

Yeah, we made a mistake in that regard back in the day -- we SHOULDN'T have let NPCs change outfits, and we should have made new NPC accounts for each new outfit so that we could have the NPC's appearance in the story posts remain consistent instead of retroactively changing on the earlier story posts when their appearance changed for the later ones.

Tohopekaliga 12-04-2016 04:06 PM

Yes, that would have been better. Something to do in The Future.

Potironette 12-04-2016 04:12 PM

The Future button looks funny.

Are all NPCs not activated?

Coda 12-05-2016 03:31 AM

No, most of them are active accounts because they're able to post. I just put special code in the system to keep them filtered out of the member list.

Potironette 12-05-2016 06:05 PM

Ohh, okay. I was trying to find them in the members list and failing miserably XD

Pessimisticat 12-05-2016 08:20 PM

Aw sweet, I love this aspect of the item exchange :D
