Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I'm super excited for this game. I wouldn't know when I will be able to play it since I don't have the right console for this game. I'm gonna get the game anyway just to have it. I've literally almost played every single Zelda game. (almost) Being able to eat things, climb trees and walls, cut down trees, and real life things. And a vast world to explore that is bigger than any other Zelda game.

Who's pumped?

SparX 01-08-2017 12:45 PM

I also do not have the right console but I will still be getting it too!

I think the only thing I am not all for is the game graphics seem meh to me, from the last games they have been making.

I also have an all loz chat thread if you want to join =D

Bassy 01-08-2017 01:08 PM

Oh, I must've not seen that thread. I'll move over to that thread.

Tohopekaliga 01-08-2017 01:25 PM

It's okay to have a thread about a more specific topic, you know. :P (Especially when the old thread wasn't touched for 9 months.)

I always buy Zelda games. ...if I have their system. So, naturally, I'll get Breath of Wind. What I've seen about it looks cool so far. :D

Bassy 01-08-2017 01:33 PM

I like the vast lands and more time and areas to explore. I also love the wolf feature. I think there is a wolf temple or something like that in the game. I thought there would be something like that in Twilight Princess when I played it but there wasn't.

SparX 01-08-2017 01:36 PM

I did say I happened to have another about ALL games if she wanted to join XD

Did anyone else hear info on the wiiu title being cut from release D:

Bassy 01-08-2017 01:57 PM

Wait... so It's not gonna be on the wii u???

Tohopekaliga 01-08-2017 02:00 PM

Well, they did just announce the Switch, and a new flagship Zelda game would be one hell of a launch title... so it's not that shocking.

Bassy 01-08-2017 02:03 PM

I was hoping for the wiiu because I don't want to wait for the prices to go down on the Switch. I was hoping for thee wiiu for another game as well which is so far not known to be on the Switch.

SparX 01-08-2017 02:08 PM

I still have neither
(has the switch even been released yet oh goodness I am far behind)
I wonder, on a side note, if they we re-release some of the games for the switch?

I also need a wiiu for bayonetta 2 >.> because they didn't release it on any console I own.

BUT Like I said it was something I heard. Not read, heard. I have yet to check for reliability XD

Tohopekaliga 01-08-2017 02:12 PM

Switch isn't out yet, nope.

I have a WiiU, and various games (including some Zelda) for it, but I only really play Splatoon on it. XD

They haven't announced what console(s) Breath of Wind will be on, far as I'm aware, it's just...not an unreasonable thing to believe they will only do Switch. But, of course, they did Twilight Princess on GameCube & Wii, so there is that.

SparX 01-08-2017 02:24 PM

I saw this video on facebook as my first visual of the game, sat there rewatching it quite a bit XD

Bassy 01-08-2017 02:34 PM

They could later on be compatible. Google says wii u and the switch. So maybe the poeple who tell you it won't be on it just read it from somewhere that isn't official. The nintendo site says its also on wiiu. I know I want to get hyrule warriors the wii u version as well. It has better graphics. And there are a few other games I also want to get for the wiiu

Coda 01-08-2017 04:52 PM

I think what I heard is that BotW won't be launched for Switch and Wii U simultaneously, but rather one release would be delayed. (I think the Switch release is coming first? But I don't remember.)

Bassy 01-08-2017 05:00 PM

It doesn't say when. It just says "coming 2017"

http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail...the-wild-wii-u

But I can't find the BotW in the Switch. I even tried to look it up on the Nintendo site and shows up wiiu.

Bassy 01-13-2017 02:47 AM

If you haven't heard...Just been released over an hour ago, The Switch will come out March 3rd and BoTW Is $299.99 US. Europe is to check their retailers. I live streamed the review about the game console and it's pretty cool.

Illusion 01-14-2017 07:15 AM

I pre-ordered my switch and got a $10 gift certificate from best buy which i had out towards my purchase for the game. Alongside gamers club unlocked.

So I'm only paying $40 for Breath of the Wild for Switch.

Now I just need to figure out what other game I should buy day 1. (Bomberman looks pretty fun.)

SparX 01-14-2017 12:21 PM

I saw the release date yesterday and was shaking my husband about getting it for me for a late anniversary present, since it is too far past my birthday XD

Coda 01-14-2017 09:36 PM

I got Gamestop's big bundle, so I got five games for $40 each.

What games are you getting?

I'm thinking of picking up Bomberman (granted the developer and publisher is Konami so I'm not sure if I should avoid buying it because you know. I don't want to be supporting evil. But it's Bomberman T_T)

Coda 01-15-2017 04:33 AM

The bundle comes with Breath of the Wild, Redout, Binding of Isaac, 1-2 Switch, and Has Been Heroes. Not 100% the collection of games I wanted -- BoI and HBH I wasn't especially interested in -- but I can see about trade value, and it got me the Switch with the neon controllers because every other way to get one was sold out. (I would much rather have gotten Just Dance and MK8 Deluxe.)

Then again, perhaps I should play BoI, considering I've done work for the publisher in the past.

I'm also TOTALLY looking forward to Puyo Puyo Tetris. That looks like FUN.

And if it makes you feel better, Bomberman is a Hudson Soft property, and Konami acquired the whole company. I'm looking forward to that too. It might end up being the best Bomberman game since Saturn.

Just shared this on Facebook but I think it's worth mentioning here:

Quote:

"Best Buy is having a $25 off $100 if you use Visa Checkout. There is no limit so you can do multiple orders. (You have to sign out for Visa Checkout which just requires a credit card.)

This also stacks with Gamers Club Unlocked which already takes 20% off all video games.

The deal also includes Pre-Orders, so 20% off a $60 then once you meet $100, another $25 off. And free shipping/store pickup.

Great time to make all those Nintendo Switch Pre-Orders, pick up games that are out or about to get out. Or just buy general electronics/appliances."
Excluding the Amiibo I used to bump my purchases up to 100+ the average rate for the games is $40 each. This includes all pre-orders.

But requires the purchase of the $30 Gamers Club Unlocked (it's 20% off all games for 2 years.)
And a credit card to use Visa Checkout. (I already have a visa, but I'm told master card and discover work.)

Bassy 01-16-2017 12:23 PM

Am I the only one who waits to get the game and the system when it's not in rush (pre orders)? When getting the game later is easier to get.

Coda 01-16-2017 02:33 PM

If the Wii and the NES Classic Edition are any indication... there isn't going to be a "later" where it'll be easier to get until next year.

SparX 01-16-2017 10:47 PM

I have the same sentiments as coda on that XD even used sells for barely 5 bucks under new price sometimes

SparX 03-11-2017 08:41 PM

So has anyone played the game yet? I'm dying to know, but have been avoiding watching videos of gameplay as much as possible XD

Jester 03-11-2017 10:13 PM

I haven't played it myself but I have a friend who has it. He really likes the game. I'd love to get it myself, someday.

Coda 03-12-2017 03:11 AM

My wife and my son are both playing it, and I'm helping out when I can. It's beautiful.

Nightmare 03-12-2017 06:48 PM

I'm in love with it. I've spent way too much time exploring so far though...

Ashy 03-13-2017 11:10 PM

I'm absolutely loving it, currently shrine hunting so I can have enough hearts to pull out the master sword. It'll be nice to have a weapon that doesn't actually break.

Illusion 03-14-2017 12:28 AM

I'm really close to finishing most of the content, overall I really dislike the weapon durability, stamina meter, and I think the world is just a little too big for it's own good. I'm not a fan of these empty pockets in the world.

Coda 03-14-2017 11:07 AM

I've come to like the weapon durability, even if it is Hylian Convenient. It's actually a very significant point of game balance. If weapons didn't break, you could sneak into Hyrule Castle early in the game, pick up the Royal Guard's Shield and a couple of late-game weapons, and be set for the whole game. But instead, that only gives you a short-term benefit, making you have to either try to complete the game right then and there (good for speedrunning) or you have to save it for the harder fights lest you break it using it to mow down trash.

The alternative would have been to gate the better gear behind artificial checkpoints, but that would have made the game too linear.

And I rather like the stamina system, too. It lets you do interesting things that the developers would have simply had to deny you entirely if it wasn't there. Teleporting and mounts are there for overland travel; stamina is there to keep you from spamming charge attacks and bypassing stuff by climbing mountains before you're supposed to be able to. (And putting charge attacks on a cooldown is just a different kind of stamina.) And as stamina systems go, this one is quite generous; it recharges quickly, you can raise your maximum fairly easily, you can restore it and augment it with food that's available early on (Staminella is very common), and you can push yourself past your limits for an additional boost right at the end.

Yes, the two systems are RESTRICTIVE, but they're MEANT to be. The game wouldn't be nearly as good without them. They're an essential part of the game's polish.

Illusion 03-14-2017 02:00 PM

I imagine that if they removed the two, they would change the game accordingly. Your talking about how the game as is wouldn't work since they designed parts of the game behind those two mechanics. Granted Zelda has worked for years without weapon durability or a stamina meter.

I feel like I'm constantly holding onto my better weapons like elixirs from Final Fantasy for that eventual fight that may never happen. Not to mention there is a rock, paper, scissor formula in the game and if you don't have the right weapon your screwed with the monsters that can knock your hearts down to 1 in one hit because "balance." They break way to easily even when I do use them, and I'm way too restricted with inventory sizes. Needless to say once I get fun weapon I like it's destroyed moments later and it's pointless to go hunt for it again. Not to mention these weapons were probably made by the worst blacksmiths ever known to Hyrule, probably made out of duct tape and foam.

It's really bullshit. I can pass off the Stamina meter for few instances, but when you spend a long time trying to climb a mountain and just a wee bit off, it's a pain in the ass to climb back up again. Or worse it rains and your already there but fall down because you slip then can't make it the rest of the way up and then fall. And once you do about 20 shrines to get the Stamina meter to a point I consider a respectful amount, I'm still easily restricted to a lot of the same problems I had before, but now Link isn't tired out over nothing.

I like the game for so many reasons, but I also have a con for every positive as well. By far one of the better games I've played in the past few years, but it's hardly in my top 5 favorite Zelda games. (1 Majoras Mask > 2 A Link to the Past > 3 Twilight Princess > 4 Wind Waker > 5 A Link Between Worlds)

Coda 03-14-2017 04:34 PM

They would have designed the game around that different choice of mechanics, yes, but then it wouldn't be this game. It would be more linear, less dynamic... more traditional.

You need to break yourself of that feeling. The limited inventory is explicitly to discourage hoarding. The lack of a repair mechanic for all but three weapons is the same. You should treat weapons like ammunition -- you don't sweat over not picking up a box of bullets. The game gives you enough weaponry through normal gameplay that the only thing getting in your way is your own OCD. The game is specifically trying to encourage you to USE the things it gives you.

Again: If you sequence-broke ahead in the game and grabbed an advanced weapon, that would make all of the weapons before that point in the game almost completely meaningless. Have you ever been playing a Final Fantasy game, excited when you reach a new town because of the opportunity for upgrades, and the stuff you find there is weaker than the stuff you already have? This mechanic is a solution to that problem.

There absolutely is not that kind of weapon type rock-paper-scissors going on, at least not by design. (There is elemental RPS, but not weapon type.) That's one of the "emergent" things that the game designers are so proud of -- they support a variety of different play styles that require different skills to be proficient at, but no encounter in the game demands any specific one of them (except for a small number that require archery). If you feel like some weapon types work better against some enemies, that's not because the game is built that way -- it's because you, personally, play better that way.

Ultimately, what you're complaining about is that Breath of the Wild isn't the game you wanted. And that's a very different argument from "this is a bad mechanic." You are welcome to not like it, but there is nothing objectively wrong with the mechanics -- they are among the best implementations of those mechanics of any game I have ever seen.

For me, BotW IS in my top tier: Link to the Past and Link Between Worlds are the only ones that beat it on my list (we agree on them being excellent), and Majora's Mask is at the bottom with only OoT below it.

Jester 03-14-2017 06:16 PM

Is the exploration part like Skyrim? Suppose you could say vast, lost in the Windermere, vast, ETC.

Coda 03-14-2017 08:56 PM

According to some calculations, Breath of the Wild's map is ~9x larger than Skyrim's, but it doesn't FEEL like that playing the game. I suspect that's because of the game's design.

For starters, I think Link is faster than the Dragonborn. He's DEFINITELY more mobile. Link's fast travel is more convenient and has more available targets, and he can fly and climb mountains.

At that scale, each tower region is about 2/3 the size of the whole of Skyrim, but the game does a pretty good job of making sure you're never just wandering the wilderness unless you really have a reason to want to -- and if you DO want to, there's usually stuff to discover (even if it's just Koroks).

Jester 03-19-2017 06:01 AM

Oh awesome, thanks for the info. Sounds like something I'd enjoy. I was looking at a few pics and was hoping it was something like you described. I always loved just wandering off the beaten path and exploring. Sounds like my kind of game. It having such a huge map adds to it. Thanks again.
