Food Aficionados Unite ツ

Come one, come all!

Welcome to...

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...pssqlxhlt2.jpg

Hey guys, it's Starry Night here! It's my second day on Trisphee and I've been browsing this forum and thought I'd take a knack it. I haven't seen a hang out thread specifically made about food, so here it is!

Come and hang out for a while, talk about your favorite foods, cravings, and maybe even recipes. I'm dying to know. Seriously. I LOVE food. Who doesn't?

Carnivores, omnivores, herbivores, vegetarians, and vegans are all welcome!

Right now, I could go for a bacon cheeseburger, pasta, sushi, or garlic fries. Maybe all of it. Now, I'm super hungry...

I'm actually suppose to lose quite a bit of weight for Air Force Boot Camp, so let me just pretend I'm eating all of that instead of actually eating it.

If you like this thread, please rate it!

*drools*

Food! Cool.

My dad and a few relatives are foodies and I am trying my hand at cooking now. I'm a big meat person. I love checking out new meats! And pies. Meat pies. ;)

I currently have some ground turkey in the freezer that I'm going to try mixing with some cream of mushroom soup to make a goo of some sort.

Zoe 02-08-2017 04:47 AM

I love indulging on things I know I shouldn't be but I can't help it! I love snacking! My favorite snack right now are chocorooms which I'm currently craving *drools* May I ask, sweet vs savory?

I'm a big fan of meat pies as well. I have a local bakery nearby that makes the BEST chicken pies.

Chocorooms are awesome. But, savory. ^_^

Is this a place where we should swap recipes?! Cause I'm down

Kaderin Triste 02-08-2017 02:06 PM

Recipe swaps are the best!

That reminds me, I really want to make muffins soon. And maybe some bread, too if I can get my kitchen cleaned up so I have the counter space.

Quiet Man Cometh 02-08-2017 09:04 PM

One of the earlier realizations I had doing this adult thing, was that food is worth spending money on.

Sure, we all would rather buy that game, or that movie, or get something fun, but having food you actually enjoy eating in your house instead of just stuff to keep you fed is a totally worthy expense! If I have to pick between going out to a fancy restaurant or getting a game I want, I will seriously consider the restaurant.

littl3chocobo 02-08-2017 10:19 PM

i'd be game for recipes too XD

i am n love with the concept of food even though i find actually eating food to be a bit of a trial XD

Baked Mac 'n Cheese with Goldfish Crackers

Okay guys, I have an awesome recipe for mac 'n cheese. Not just any ordinary mac 'n cheese though, this one is baked and topped with delicious goldfish crackers. Sounds odd, but it's actually really good and it's quite simple to make unlike those recipes that use a billion ingredients like eggs (why?), thyme, or ground mustard. We don't need that.

2 Cups Elbow Macaroni, Uncooked
3/4 lb. (12 oz.) Velveeta, Cut Into 1/2-Inch Cubes
1/3 Cup Milk
1/8 Tsp. Pepper
Half Bag Of Goldfish Crackers
1/2 Stick Butter

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cook macaroni in large saucepan as directed on package; drain well. Return to pan.
3. Stir in remaining ingredients; cook on low heat until Velveeta is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring frequently.
4. Pour mac 'n cheese into a casserole dish.
5. In a small bowl combine: crushed Goldfish crackers and melted butter. Mix until combined. Top onto mac 'n cheese.
6. Bake for 20 minutes and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Huh. Sounds like an interesting recipe! I would probably make a few mods just based on personal taste...but overall that sounds awesome!

Thanks! I made it on Thanksgiving and it was pretty good. Let me know what you modify or add, your recipe will probably improve it. :D

I always have Kraft Dinner around (there's a Canadian joke there) and often I'll throw in some good, sharp cheddar or old cheddar to enhance the cheesy-ness. I'm picky about my box food!

Not my thing but I know people who swear by chip dip made from Velveeta, re-fried beans, and maybe a can of salsa all thrown together into the microwave.

I can already tell you that instead of velveeta, I would use a combination of grated cheeses (probably sharp cheddar, colby, and/or a pepper jack) and cheese-it's instead of goldfish because I feel like they have better flavor.

Beyond that, I would have to try the recipe prior to adding or changing anything. Although I don't have any of the ingredients except cheese currently. XP

Cheez-its! I would've never thought of that. That should be delicious, definitely a stronger flavor than Goldfish.

littl3chocobo 02-10-2017 06:11 AM

can you use real cheese or would that change the taste too much?

Kaderin Triste 02-10-2017 12:56 PM

It would give it a better cheese flavor. But otherwise shouldn't actually be an issue. At least in my opinion. I don't care for processed cheese products like velveeta.

Starry Night 02-10-2017 09:23 PM

Has anyone here tried Vietnamese food? I'm a big fan of Phở Bò Viên which is pho with beef meatballs. I also like fried shrimp cake, which is not really a cake—think of a crab cake, but shrimp and deep fried to perfection. Last but not least, lemongrass chicken or beef is a great choice if you're a picky eater and do not like to venture out with your diet.

Moonshadow 02-10-2017 11:02 PM

So I love to eat! Not so much to cook, but last night I made a flatbread pizza in my little toaster over!

First I toasted the flatbread, then I put sauce on it and pepperoni, seasoned with oregano, garlic powder, mozzarella cheese and feta cheese, and toasted it until the mozzarella cheese melted.

Took maybe 20 minutes at the most, and it was delicious!

I love Bun Ga. I used to go to a Vietnamese restaurant at least once a week and order this, then the restaurant closed and I cried!

That sounds delicious! I, too, love making toaster oven pizzas...but not as nearly delicious as yours. I just use tomato sauce and cheese...I never have any pepperoni on hand, but I'll definitely go out to buy some to try your recipe. Also, anything with garlic powder is definitely good, lol.

Bun Ga! I am a huge fan of vermicelli, so I definitely have to try that. I live in the Bay Area, so there's always tons of Vietnamese restaurants, and I can't imagine if they all closed down. I'd cry too!

Quiet Man Cometh 02-12-2017 04:05 AM

I've had Pho once. I like soups in general so it was okay but didn't strike me as anything special.

My favourite place for Udon is the stall at the medical tower where I see my specialists. It's a Sushi Go! or something like that, but they use the same broth pot for all of their soups and it's really good! I have no clue what's in it: floating stuff, a spice bag, and I'm pretty sure I saw chicken feet poking out now and then.

I'm a broth person. When I think of it, I'll take left over veg and meat bones and just let them boil for a tasty drink. ;)

Snack tonight was apple fries! Sort of. Just thing sliced this apple that I had lying around and threw the pieces into a hot pan, tossed them a bit. Cooking things helps my stomach process them so I experiment. Still have half the apple so I might try doing it again, perhaps with cinnamon or maybe some savory. Not sure, yet. I often just figure something out once I start cooking.

Kaderin Triste 02-12-2017 01:34 PM

I can honestly say that no, I have not had Vietnamese food. But then eating out is kind of hard for me because of my dietary choices...
>.>
So if I can find a good, authentic, meatless recipe I might attempt to make something...

Quiet: I would like to suggest a sprinkle of either chili powder or curry powder and cumin.

littl3chocobo 02-12-2017 08:14 PM

pho is alright XD i like my bases more greek/french, hahaha

I'm not the biggest curry fan, and I have to be careful with spicy things since I'm not 100% sure what spices my gut reacts to or not. I know chili flakes can be a problem. Thai chilies seem to be okay, but hotter than I like. Not familiar with how cumin tastes off the top of my head. I need to go and investigate what these individual things are because I know I've had them but not enough to tell what each individual thing tastes like.

Id like to find more ways to use Lemongrass. I like the flavour, but the actual stuff is like chewing on wood, so maybe I should try it with a spice ball or something if I am making a broth. How would I use it without steeping? The pieces are a little small to just eat around.

Starry Night 02-13-2017 10:03 PM

Kaderin Triste: I used to be vegan, check out http://thevietvegan.com/vietnamese-dishes/ for some delicious meat-free vietnamese dishes. :p-cool:

littl3chocobo: I love bisque and french onion soup.

Quiet Man Cometh: I never like to eat the raw thing, I only use it to incorporate it into my cooking. Adding it to broth with other spices and seasonings is really nice, the lemon-y flavor adds a nice touch.

Quiet Man Cometh 02-13-2017 10:31 PM

Well I explored the spice cupboard. No cumin or curry powder or anything that relates to them (as far as I know). I could try seasoning with my tumeric tea perhaps. Pretty sure it has cardamom and maybe cumin in there. I'll have to check.

There is paprika, smoked paprika, and chipotle chili powder, and regular chili powder. I think I like paprika, but I'm only encountered it on my sister-in-law's deviled eggs.

Moonshadow 02-13-2017 10:44 PM

I am a big cumin fan, not so much curry.
I do use Garam Masala on fish usually. It has such a nice aroma.

Quiet Man Cometh 02-13-2017 11:54 PM

Friend cooked a fabulous roast last night, so fabulous leftovers tonight!

Basic of the basic though. Gutted some baked potatoes, fried with pieces of roast, gravy, and the usual salt, pepper, and parsley, all in one pan. Shovel food at it's finest!

Kaderin Triste 02-14-2017 01:30 AM

Quiet: Ah. That has got to make cooking somewhat tricky with spices...

Starry: Ah! Thanks for the link! I will bookmark it and browse through it later when my stomach isn't so unhappy.

Moon: I have to say pretty much same on cumin. One of my fave spices!
Also, I have a bottle of garam masala in my spice drawer that I bought for a recipe like a year ago, but I never made it and I've been so unsure what to use it for that I haven't even opened it. But I may have to try using it in stuff soon just to see how it tastes.
XD

Quiet Man Cometh 02-14-2017 06:06 AM

I have a random pineapple curry sauce thing that I am never sure what to do with, besides some manner of pasta or rice. I quite like mango chutney, too, and usually stick it on red meat, or anything that I think needs flavour. Other than that, I don't keep a lot of bottled sauces around as I tend to have some issues with them on occasional as well.

My gut is just flat buggy. Used to be made of iron but time and crummy health eat away at things. Not knowing what sort of ingredients give me trouble gets awkward. For example, a friend's home made butter chicken gave me trouble, but not the one a relative made with a tweaked package sauce.

Moonshadow 02-15-2017 12:14 AM

@ Quiet: I use it on veggies too.
Tonight I made salmon in wine and butter, and used Old Bay on it.
Was delish!

Quiet Man Cometh 02-17-2017 04:04 AM

I need to nab my sister's salmon recipe. It was really good. I like the way my mother makes it a lot, which is basically butter, brown sugar, and soy. sauce.

Never heard of Old Bay.

Quiet Man Cometh 02-18-2017 04:40 AM

So, peanut butter and jam burger. Who would have thought?

The Taphouse we went to for dinner, apparently: beef burger, chipotle peanut butter, and bacon jam. Tasted pretty good actually. My sister had it and we all had a bite.

I had an almond pesto linguine and a tiny side mac & cheese to try. Not a big fan of bread crumbs on my mac & cheese as I find it makes it dry, but it was still good.

I loved salmon ever since I was a kid! I only know how to cook it one way though.

I preheat the oven to 350. I season the salmon with garlic salt, seasoned salt, garlic powder, lemon pepper, and black pepper. Then, I squeeze lemon juice on it. Sometimes, I like to garnish it with a thin slice of lemon to make it look fancy. This is optional, but sometimes I add some butter on top of the salmon before I put it into the oven. I leave it in the oven for 20 minutes or so. I love this salmon served over rice!

Quiet Man Cometh 02-20-2017 12:44 AM

There's a French recipe wherein you cook white fish in a dishwasher, because the temperature and steam is just the right temperature and duration. I've been meaning to try it one day. Something to actually consider now. I live right next to a salmon river, though I'm not sure if it's sold anywhere or just local people fishing for personal use.

Starry Night 02-21-2017 03:31 AM

I've seen that on YouTube, definitely thought it was interesting...haha.

NCS3RR4N 03-04-2017 07:32 AM

Heck yes. I love food. I love watching recipe videos.

And now I'm craving for some good salmon.

Starry Night 03-05-2017 02:45 AM

Salmon is always amazing. Anyone here like salmon teriyaki? I had it in my bento box the other day-which reminds me, do you guys ever get those bento boxes at Japanese restaurants? I love them.

NCS3RR4N 03-06-2017 01:57 AM

Teriyaki sauces are too sweet for me (or maybe I just haven't found a place which makes good teriyaki). Bento dishes in Japanese restaurants are cute, but I always prefer to get noodles or the rice bowls.

Since we're on the topic of Japanese cuisine, what are your thoughts on wasabi? I used to hate it, but now I always want extra helpings of it.

Oh, man. I always mix wasabi in the soy sauce where I dip my sushi in, I love how it tastes. Other than that, I can't really eat a lot of it. I LOVE spicy sauces like sriracha and tapatio, but it's hard for me to get down a lot of wasabi. I always feel it going through my nose.
