Snaaaaake!

It's a snake!

So, fun Derpy adventure could have taken a turn for the worse. But thankfully didn't. So a friend and I decided to go on a small sort of mini hiking adventure in an area near town and one of the people who works in the area warned us that rattlesnakes are commonly found and have been spotted out and about, but I didn't think much of ut because in all my years, I have never ywt actually seen one.
So we're on a kind of short cliff and I go to step closer to the ledge to maybe pose Derpy for a picture and I hear a strange noise. I start to take another step forward to see what animal is down below making such a strange noise when I suddenly realized that the noise I was hearing was a rattlesnake! I slowly backed away and everyone lived. The end.
Now, have a couple snake pictures! (It was coiled under a small ledge, so I couldn't get any really great pics of it.)

I've heard rattlesnakes are evolving to no longer have their rattle since the ones that have it are being removed from the gene pool.

I've found 3 venomous snakes and 1 non so far in the back yard just this past month. I have to look for them before letting the dogs out every time. Have had too many close calls and one did get bit a couple of years ago.

Kaderin Triste 05-21-2018 09:40 PM

But will they still be rattlesnakes then if they don't rattle? XD

Thankfully where I live there aren't too many venomous snakes (mainly just rattlesnakes) and they're not super frequent. This was my only actual spotting of one in the wild and I've lived here all (almost) 30 years of my life.
Those doggos are lucky to have such an attentive person caring for them! Hopefully the one that was bitten recovered well.

Also, snake pics have been added to first post.

Maybe call them rattlessnakess? I don't think I've seen that pattern before, what region if I may ask?

She did survive the bite, it took anti-venom among other things. It was frustrating because I checked around just as much before but she had to go nosing inside a bush. But later wound up getting an incurable cancer, so can't say she's still around.

I'm in the Northwestern U.S. (central Montana specifically.) Based on mild amounts of research, I think it's a prairie rattlesnake.

Edit: Further research has given me some fun statistics.
There are only 10 species of snake native to Montana.
The prairie rattlesnake is the only one of these species that is venomous.

Derpy found a new friend ??? :0 I always knew Derpy was a gangster and hung with the tough dangerous crowd.

Espy 05-22-2018 01:28 AM

Then, clearly, they'd b rattlelesssnakes.

EDIT: shit biomecha got to it already

XoGizmooX 05-22-2018 01:36 AM

They'd be boots and belts

Espy 05-22-2018 01:39 AM

....that's mean D:

XoGizmooX 05-22-2018 01:42 AM

Well if it's close enough to bite me I'm biteing first with lead

Espy 05-22-2018 01:48 AM

Just don't provoke it and it'll leave you alone :|

Pretty Rattlebaby. yay for everything turning out well for everyone in the encounter and yay for just leaving it be. Sneks only attack if provoked, and Rattlebabies give a warning before striking. They were here first, so trying to kill them is not only mean, it takes a predator out of the environment, which means the prey animals have more of a chance to reproduce, and become problem critters themselves.

Derpy McBlueEyes 05-22-2018 08:09 PM

"I wanted to hug the snake, but Kadewin said it would be a bad idea, so we had to leave." Derpy pouts.

Boris 05-24-2018 11:40 AM

Derpy needs new friends... go take him to where the Moose roam.

Kaderin Triste 05-24-2018 02:32 PM

Well, most trips depend on my time off from work (basically 1 day per month if I'm lucky) and friends with cars. So usually just short trips near town. But I'll see what we can manage this summer. Maybe not moose, but we might be able to befriend some deer and antelope. Maybe some geese, ducks, and swans too.

Witchchylde 05-25-2018 10:33 AM

I guess we'd call them by their descriptors if they lose their rattles, then they'd be diamondback snakes and prairie snakes and the like.

Boris 05-26-2018 07:25 PM

My moose comment was a joke. They charge, and they're huge... and I'd hate for you to be on the receiving end of them being defensive.

The animals you mentioned are nice animals... well, most of them. Careful with Swans.

Kaderin Triste 05-26-2018 07:30 PM

I mean, I've seen moose before, so it would be possible to do a simular pic to Derpy's snake one. From a safe distance with an air-hug. XD
The swans will definitely be a semi-distanced image as well, since I never see then out of the pond area at the park. But the geese I can get pretty close to.

Boris 05-26-2018 07:46 PM

Ah, it's good you're alright. I think Moose are cute, but I know they're dangerous, as is any animal.

Kaderin Triste 05-27-2018 12:13 AM

*finally remembered to upload more adventure pics*
Derpy is quite the little explorer. I feel like I should post more of his adventures here....for those who aren't on facebook to follow his page...
>.>

Also, his birthday is coming up in just a few weeks! 8D
So there might be something small planned for that even though I'll have to work at least one of my jobs that day.

Boris 05-27-2018 12:17 PM

Kaderine, Derpy is really cute! 10/10 would like to see more of his adventures.

Kaderin Triste 05-27-2018 05:11 PM

TIME TO POST A TON OF OLD ADVENTURES! BWAHAHAHAHA!
Lol. I have a great little video clip from his first storm chase last spring. We didn't catch any really good storms, but did get some decent wind and lightning.
(Omg, the video quality is not as good as I remember.... xP)

I heard that some actually quit using the rattle because it as attracting things like snake researchers and photographers and they didn't like the attention.

Kind of like how bear bells and gun shots can attract bears in some areas because they've learned to associate them with people and food.
