Live-Action Medieval Combat (Belegarth, Amtgard, etc.)
It's like that. I do Belegarth~ I'm the archery captain here, a member of our Realm Council, a founder of our group, and provisional blue captain, and a personal trainer XD
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif >w< i dunno why that sounds fun id never have the money or skills to do anything in that though it'd be a blast to watch if they had any near my area xD http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
Well, look up Bel, check the maps, and, if there isn't a house near you, you can START one. I would gladly help. I would even walk you through some stuff I know, and, if necessary, send you maybe ten bucks a month to help you build weapons and such.
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif i doubt theres anyone willing to join me in this besides maybe my brother lol so it'd start off as a sibling rivalry LOL http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
Well, you'd be surprised. We thought nobody would join. there areover fifty people in our little realm alone. It's been, oh, 4 months since we started this house? XD
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif well as far as i can tell in the MD area there isn't one or thats anywhere in a reasonable driving distance anyway lol... but on that note i have no idea how to make weapons in RL http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
There areguides XD It's pvc/fiberglass, foam, tape, and adhesive, then some cloth for covers XD
On that note, I must take my leave~ Bike issues are fixed, and it's been time to go home for an hour now XD Good luck with the pixeling, Rose~! |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif oh that stuff thats doable.. takes time but doable >w> 'll look more into it before i decide if i want to try and form a house or not id liek to know my time is put to good use and ok laters xD also thank you i'll need it o.o; http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
I play Amtgard myself, never had any armor fancier than leather though. Then again I never played any character who COULD wear anything heavier. I DID, however, become proficient at catching arrows!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif never played that truth be told o.o i normally get stuck in cloth or leather though newer mmos seems to have the clerics in mail and with a shield (as i think should be.. ) though normally the cloth users get the more colorful/dazzling armor in most games ive seen xD http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
D&D allows clerics to wear armor because of the traditional restrictiveness of the paladin class. MMOs that have both paladins and clerics/priests tend to make the latter wear cloth armor unless they're based on D&D rules. (Fact is, clerics are overpowered in 3.0/3.5 in no small part BECAUSE they can outfit themselves like a paladin while still casting spells as well as a wizard.)
Amtgard is similar to the other medieval-combat games, except it has classes with special abilities and restrictions. My ability to catch arrows was a trait of the monk class, but I had to get good at ACTUALLY CATCHING ARROWS to use it. (Of course, in Amtgard, bows are limited to a 35 pound draw strength and arrows have a 2"-diameter ball of foam padding in place of an arrowhead in order to make them safe to shoot at people, so the arrows are moving MUCH slower than arrows intended to kill something.) |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif i think i'd prefer to have class only specials really, as fr as clerics becoming over powered in certain games i see it happens, this new mmo is tweaking skills now to fix the balance so nothings gotten too out of hand, and being so new still most people don't understand that stun and silence kills the healer.. heh why is like everyone i talk to into some form of combat game in rl D: im jealous.. </3 i don't think we have anything like that in my area .__.; aside from renfest but ours here kinda ish lame... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
In D&D the cleric is still almost as good as a rogue when it comes to bashing people over the head in face-to-face combat, so being silenced ISN'T fatal (especially if the cleric cast buffs ahead of time).
Then again, I do have a wizard that's wearing armor and carrying around a sword and shield almost as big as he is. |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif this is true.. i sadly didn't get to play table top D&D much played a bit of the mmo but it wasn't as fun as the real thing Dx http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
If a rogue has you flanked though >.>
|
If you account for the rogue having flanking you have to account for the cleric not being silenced. If you're comparing how a silenced cleric handles, you have to likewise take away the rogue's big class feature.
|
xD I seem to fail whenever I'm not flanking... 1d6 from my rapier as oppsed to getting 2d6 added from sneak attack... I'm like worthless without it. But does a Cleric need to say his spells? He can always take silent spell xD
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif so to beat a cleric duck tape his/her mouth and steal the weapon got it o.o; lol http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
Rose - That won't necessarily beat a cleric... xD
Edit - The cleric in my party is wearing full-plate armor at the moment, so take away his sword, and his AC is still high enough that you probably won't get an attack on him (it's 29 when he does total defense). |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif ok so duck tape, take the weapon and stick him in water and accidentally drop a toaster? >.> http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
xDDD Well you can take his weapon, and he still can fight... I'd rather not be throwing a cleric in melee anyway, but if he has heavy armor, he can handle it... You aren't likely going to find a toaster though. lol
If he can't say his spells, then he can't do them, unless he has silenced spell... But... tie up his hands, and he might not be able to do anything either. |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif see theres ways and im sure that there are frying pans those are considered weapons now x'D i know all the rules for D&D and game like it so im mainly just joking with the toaster thing i played a fallen (i was something weird im not sure what they did to my character in truth i started off as a elf o.O; ) cleric back in the day >.> i had to do rolls if i chose to heal my party or not lol... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
Improvised weapons... xD
But that's not likely going to do much to... anyone that's has a class other than 'commoner'. xD I figured you were joking about th toaster... xD But it's still almost the same, he has to roll to heal the party. *nod nod* Were you playing 3.0 or 3.5? I used to play 3.5 until 4.0 came out, and then I switched to Pathfinder RPG (which is very similar to playing D&D 3.5) |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif i haven't played in .. over 7 or 8 years i think lol probably longer then that i was still taking Kempo up when i played card games and d&D ^.^; not even sure what we were playing under version wise o.o;i mean the GM's mom was the owner of the card shop so we had access to any books we'd ever need for the game http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
I think the first time I played was about 7 years ago as well. I THINK we were playing 3.0 at that point. I had a druid back then.
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif i just had the one cleric i was the lowest level of the group coming in late ._.; lol i didnt get to play much so i didnt even get to a high level plus the card shop moved so Dx after that there was no way to walk to it http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
Oh, I see. We bought the books that we needed, so we don't go to hobby shops to buy often (we are also on Paizo's mailing list so we get new Pathfinder stuff a lot).
Well... We do go to one game shop every Thursday, but it's to play Pathfinder, not to buy more books xD |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif oh well we had books we owned.. it was more of the fact it moved from the location and there was no way for me to get to it im sure they went on with the game http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
Yeah, see, in Bel, there are no real classes....I mean, you are SUPPOSED to stick with a weapon style, like, I'm an archer, and so I mostly use bows and one handed weapons, and would normally wear lether. BUT, also, you are NOT allowed to catch arrows, as it's considered kinda cheap since they're forced to move so slow(like Coda said, foam padding, at least 2 inches thick, 2.5 inch diameter, and no more than 35 pund draw, at 28")
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif well weapon types work.. i know most of the times in my stories or in rps i dont label things as classes more of oh your use a ax oks i guess itd be cheap.. not sure if id still have a easy time catching them still xD it's a fen : o http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
I can't do them XD
@ Rose - Well, then, Bel would work well for ya~ Dagorhir and Amtguard are good games, too, but I prefer BEl~ I actually happen to be proficient at all weapon types x3 |
In Amtgard, if you're not a monk and you try to catch an arrow it's considered a hit to that arm. Blocking an arrow with a weapon blade is considered to break the weapon. (There's some inconsistency on whether or not blocking with the hand guard on a weapon is considered safe.) Blocking and catching arrows is a class feature, as is the right to block an arrow with a shield (any shield can do it but not everyone can use a shield). It's also considered VERY bad form to catch the arrow by its shaft or to deflect it by striking it out of the way, because that breaks arrows, and you'll probably get chased off the field by the archers if you do it. It really pisses people off. >.>
You can play multiple classes but you only get experience for one class per week. By the time I graduated from college and had to move away I was a level 3 wizard, a level 2 monk (or was I 3 there too?), and a level 2 warrior (because if you forget your gear and have to borrow some, you're forced to play warrior, and mid-week practice sessions are worth a quarter credit for warrior). |
Well, yeah, arrows cost a LOT to replace D; I mean, I can make a javelin for a couple dollars. It'll cost me seven for a good, quality arrow, and that' all I use, I don't use shit arrows. Cause, hey, shoddy equipment hurts people. But, yeah, we don't have classes, and if an arrow hits a weapon, it's considered to have gone through. Same with armor, except head armor. Head armor is impenetrable, for reasons I am unaware of.
|
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...eaves2-1-1.gif id just be happy to see any of them near where i live .. xD i could learn whatever rules for them it'd just be kinda fun to do something along the lines >w<; cause its magicked : o ~for the head armor~ lol http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ves2-1-1-1.gif |
...there's no magic in Belegarth XD It's a full-contact sport, no tossing birdseed packets yelling "Lightning Bolt!"
|
In Amtgard, head shots simply don't count at all, for safety reasons. If you're hit in the head, you're free to ignore it; if you're hurt, you can announce "head!" and combat is forced to stop. Presumedly the same rationale applies to Bel -- if head armor were penetrable it would encourage MULTIPLE blows to the head to penetrate it.
Edit: They're not birdseed packets! XD Edit 2: Amtgard does have classless sparring too, and even in class battles casters are expected to end up locking weapons at some point. (Carrying a weapon larger than a dagger uses up your MP though...) So you're EXPECTED to be able to defend yourself with a blade. |
Oh good~ and no, in Bel, headshots with anything non-projectile, or purposely throwing a non-projectile will get ya in trouble~
|
If your hand isn't on the weapon in Amtgard it doesn't count as dealing damage, so throwing a non-projectile weapon in combat is distinctly discouraged. I mean, you're allowed to toss it to someone else to use it, or toss it aside if you can't use it anymore, but it never deals damage unless it's specifically a throwing weapon and you're playing a class that has the skill to use throwing weapons. (That is to say, rogues and level 2 monks, with warriors permitted to use javelins but not other throwing weapons.. if I remember the rules right, it's been years.)
Of course, if you're borrowing a weapon and you treat it poorly, the owner is probably going to throw you off the field. (Possibly literally.) |
Hey, I've got a curiosity about your arrow construction. Amtgard arrows have to have the original heads hacksawed off and a coin taped to the now-flat end of the shaft, in order to guarantee that it can't puncture through the padding. And then when I make arrows, I use a technique I learned from another player -- I cut one of those yellow foam practice golf balls in half and tape that to the nickel to make sure that nothing solid-solid ever strikes anyone, and then layer on softer foam on top of that to cushion the impact itself and to make it large enough in diameter to ensure that it can't poke someone in the eye. (Amtgard 5.0 rules use "eye socket" as the weapon diameter requirement instead of putting a fixed 2.5" measurement on it.)
|
I meant, like, taking your hammer and tossing it at someone in a rough, "I wanna hurt you." fashion XD Tossing someone a weapon is totally ok. And.....we only have javelins, arrows, and rocks as projectiles. yes. I SAID ROCKS. XD
You're asking the right person~ *archery captain and blacksmith* We make our arrows in much the same fashion, only the coin is required to be a penny for some reason. We then, as a courtesy(It isn't required) put an extra small layer of foam over the penny, to make sure noone ever gets hurt. Then , we add the foam head. And yes, we DO have to take off the original arrowhead. |
