What are you mistaken for?

As in ethnicity...

I am mistaken for Filipino most of the time, especially by the Filipino themselves. I kinda like it because I like Filipino.

I am also mistaken for,

- Blasian
- Laos
- Thai
- Polynesian
- Indonesian
- Chinese
- Mexican Mix Asian

What about you?

I think that Cambodian is the most diverse looking race out there. A lot of us 100% cambodian sometime look Indian, Hawaiian, Mexican, Brazilian, Chinese, Korean, Laos, Thai, Polynesian people, Native American, African American...etc.

People never really say we are Cambodian. They never get to it! D:

I have people who random start talking to me in their language and I just stood there saying nothing and sometime I pretend to know and just nod my head. LOl...one day I was walking at night from school and then a lady stop her car and start asking me stuff in Spanish and I just shake my head because I don't know the street she was asking. XD I can understand some spanish but I can't speak so yeah. Lol

Not only that, she thought I was a girl. She call me Chica and then start throwing up a bunch of words at me. Hahaha

johnny 03-22-2011 12:47 PM

Eh.

I'm white. There's really no distinction between whites and other whites like there is with other races. You're pretty much "white" regardless if you come from Irish, Scottish, Scandinavian, English, etc. heritage.

Aiko 03-22-2011 01:15 PM

Since I look like the average Dane.... I haven't really encountered that problem a lot, though I was once mistaken for being Polish (No idea why though)

Blaine 03-22-2011 02:21 PM

I'm with Johnny. Though since I'm blonde, I get Russian the most. I've even been called russian names since they seem to forget my real name.
I'm mostly german, but I have gotten Holland once. THAT was an odd time,

Ginger 03-22-2011 03:21 PM

I've been mistaken for Polish before.

I'm Dutch, Scotch, German, Irish, part Indian, and one other but I always forget it >.<

Hero 03-22-2011 03:27 PM

Mistaken as Chinese or Japanese
I'm Korean so I guess it's close enough
=w=

Echo-chan713 03-22-2011 03:29 PM

Someone thought I was part Chinese somewhere in my blood because of how small my eye socket is, it's less than one inch of eye socket.

I'm German (Good chance Western), Dutch, Portuguese, Welch, Native American (less than 1%, Souix Indian Tribe), and Wales

Ditto.

Damies 03-22-2011 05:35 PM

I get mistaken for... nothing. I'm a typical white American. :C

Panda 03-22-2011 07:33 PM

The reason people call a lot of asian chinese, is because they are not educated enough so their only safe answer is to go with Chinese. Some people think all asian are Chinese and it is stupid.

Gozed 03-22-2011 07:41 PM

I know I don't know enough about Asian ethnicities so I wouldn't have evened tried go guess. >_>

But I'm just white, we don't even get a special option on standardized tests.

Jyuudaime 03-22-2011 08:03 PM

〈✩〉
Let's Get Started.
ready steady go.
Please. trust me.

╔═══════════════════╗

I really am: Japanese and German
I am mistaken for: Mexican, African-American, Korean, Chinese.
But~ I don't mind. They all jelly. <3

╚═══════════════════╝

Panda 03-22-2011 09:10 PM

Jyuudaime, I look at your picture, you don't look any where black at all. XD I wonder why people think that. :3

Jyuudaime 03-22-2011 09:14 PM

I think it's because of my sister.
She straightens her hair a lot, so...
It gets rather poofy and things.
So that is probably why.
They look at my younger sister.
Then at me.
And they just assume.
Idk. It doesn't bother me~ 8D

Panda 03-22-2011 09:33 PM

Yeah and black people are pretty nice. XD

People think black people are this and that, they keep assuming because of how they act and talk loudly. But when you get to know them, they are actually nice and like to have fun! :D I love my black friends, they are so nice and loving.

Jyuudaime 03-22-2011 09:46 PM

Yeah, stereotypes make the world go around, I guess. It's pretty ridiculous.
Like Asians should all be brilliant, yeah no.
I am very c+ average... xD

Ashy 03-22-2011 10:36 PM

im always mistaken for an aboriginal >< man im so tanned :P

Espy 03-22-2011 10:42 PM

Espy gets mistaken being Filipino and Japanese or Chinese mixed with something else...Maybe it's because I have lots of Filipino friends and I hang out with them a lot, and I'm short, and have tanned skin (even though my natural skin tone is pale even for a Chinese person....).

And then some high school freshmen thought I was Japanese because of my haircut. What kind of reason is that? >.>

And then Chinese/Taiwanese people think I'm Han mixed with aboriginal or Hakka XD

I never get offended though :P

Echo-chan713 03-22-2011 11:48 PM

For Me I was a C+ average High School Student but I could draw but someone told me I was part Chinese because of my eyes (and after High School), not my drawing abilities, and if they did think I was part Chinese because of my drawing skills there are SO way off because it would of been the Japanese that can [stereotypically] draw.

My ex is half Korean half Chinese so people mistaken him for other Asian nations or they would say that he's pure Korean, but his features are more Chinese.

Panda 03-23-2011 10:38 AM

Cambodian, Laos, and Thai can draw too. That is like what we are really good at and we draw realistic stuff and 3D sculptures. They are so wrong lol. I told you they need to be educated.

Lucifer 03-23-2011 10:50 AM

People seem to think I am all white, or part hispanic, or nay number of different things, because I am ale, but my skin has an olive tint to it.

People almost never think I'm Greek, even though I'm half (my mom's mutt side just sorta dominated my looks, I'm like a palette swap of her basically, with an altered nose and tush *nods*) On her side I am Irish, Scottish, Welsh, German(Pennsylvania Dutch?), a bit Polish, and who knows what else... there's like a whole freaking continent in there D8

Rem 03-25-2011 12:32 PM

Nothing, unless being mistaken for someone much younger counts? :'D But I'm white (I mean paaaaale ghostly white) with brown hair and green eyes, I just look plain and typical American mutt.

My mom got mistaken for Hispanic all the time though (she was Native American.) It's funny this thread made me remember...I used to be really upset that I didn't look like her, when I was little I used to put my arm next to hers and and be like 'when am I gonna be tan like you, mama?' When she finally told me my skin wasn't going to magically turn darker when I got older, I think I cried. xD

Booga 03-31-2011 02:30 PM

Once when I was 10 I was mistaken for a little boy but that was because I was wearing some pretty baggy clothes with a messy hairstyle lol. Anyway ethnicity wise people would mistaken me for a native american female.

Absinthe 03-31-2011 10:29 PM

Just...white...? lol

In high school some guys on my school bus seemed to be convinced I was Russian, which I'm not. So I guess that's the closest to me being "mistaken" for something.

Haha you didn't even get Sweden?
I'm Dutch myself, but they barely think I'm from Holland, I usually get Sweden thrown at me cause of my tall-white-blue-blonde combination.
However this changed ever since I dyed my hair to darkblonde/brown (half a year ago).

I think other people think I'm from Sweden because I'm so pale. It's almost getting rare, the whole 'tan' trend is getting big here too :/ I see it growing around me..

johnny 04-01-2011 10:12 AM

Since I'm not even blonde, I don't even get to be mistaken for someone of Scandinavian descent or German or anything like that.

Brown hair, pale skin = no national stereotype.

It's kind of un-fun. ]:

Gozed 04-01-2011 10:20 AM

Agreed Johnny.
Only thing anyone ever mistakes me for is being either older or younger than what I really am, and thinking I'm my nephew's dad.

Taki 04-01-2011 10:44 AM

I'm very white, and I'm American so I don't really get mistaken for anything. XD I don't have any obvious trace of any other ethnicity in me. My family has been in America for several generations, too.

Taradiddle 04-01-2011 10:59 PM

Someone said I look kinda Russian once, which is... not even close.

Hertiage: Czech, German, Scottish, and whatever Scotts-Irish is supposed to be.

Water 04-02-2011 11:13 AM

I'm often mistaken for Mexican, or Australian Aboriginal, I dunno, I can see it with the Aboriginal thing, but not the Mexican.
I'm 1/2 Papua New Guniean and 1/2 white Australian, btw.

krankhaus 04-03-2011 08:49 PM

Someone asked me if my father was black once 'cause I tan so well.

But other than that, no one's mistaken me for anything but white. I'm 1/4th German and 3/4ths Italian.

Nanka 04-04-2011 09:44 PM

I'm mostly mistaken for being female if that counts for anything. xD And sometimes people think I'm Cuban, even though I don't look Hispanic at all.

Azrael 04-04-2011 10:22 PM

I don't get mistaken, either. I'm white. XD Sooo ya. The only thing I get is sometimes people wondering if my hair is naturally blonde. LoL. But that's about it.

Jurinjo 04-06-2011 09:41 AM

Someone thought you were Thai? pfft silly person! -shifty eyes-

Anyways as Panda knows I'm primarily Thai and Filipino. My dad's side is a mystery but apparently people on my mom's side like to go "gigitty gigitty" with people from other ethnicity. xD

ANYWAY on the actual topic I have been mistaken for being of a Spanish-speaking origin. While I was at the ages of 10-13 no one even knew I could speak English fluently because I was so quiet! xD They also only saw me speak to a Mexican named Ramario a lot so that helped. A couple other times I get spoken to in spanish through my life, even with friends who just forget what I am xD (met them because they thought I was Mexican p=)

Something about my face must've changed...or people just recognize Thai/Filipino people more easily? Just this last year I've been getting a lot of questions about my heritage. "Where are you from?" is the most common way I get asked. I actually had an Italian couple ask me if I was Italian...granted I was serving pizza that day at work. (For some reason I always speak with a slight Italian accent when I do xD; )

Yuki 04-06-2011 09:50 AM

When I am in other countries people have thought I was American, German or Dutch. Which I find pretty offensive in a way. lol And half of the time nobody have any idea where Sweden is.

17th 04-06-2011 08:58 PM

Indian, maybe. Native American. Nobody really thinks I am 100% "black" cause I don't look it. I'm also a lot lighter than everybody in my immediate family. I wish I knew where in Africa is in my blood. v.v

The Evil Twin 04-13-2011 10:00 AM

I'm often mistaken for being Welsh, Scottish, Finnish or German

Fashion Zombie 04-13-2011 07:09 PM

I'm American, and I guess I don't get mistaken for anything else.

My great grandparents were Native American, Irish, and German. Although, I'm so fair-skinned, and lightly freckled, and I have dirty blonde hair, and green/blue eyes, so people never would guess that I'm Native American.

M i l k 04-13-2011 08:51 PM

xD I honestly haven't been mistaken as anything ...
but whenever I ask people what they think I look like, They can't even tell me.. They just say "you look white" XD

Funky Monkey Vibration 04-15-2011 09:11 AM

English.
People tend to think I'm from England online.
I have no idea why.

I'm Norwegian. : o
